There are no reserves. Just IOU's that the government tells you are reserves. IOUs, in the form of non-marketable intra-governmental Treasury bonds which are the equivalent of signed, uncashed checks against the general fund.

You don't pay into anything. All the money that comes from your paycheck goes to the general fund and the Congress appropriates enough money every year to fund current SS/Medicare needs and then spends the rest on other things. It has been that way since 1937.

 

Government doesn't decide the value of money. The only thing it can do, like any criminal gang, is force you to use what it calls money instead of actual money. And, then you can grovel before it's majestic altars that it doesn't create hyperinflation during your lifetime.
