If women are capable of serving in combat roles, then why aren't they part of the draft?

excellent question. why not? the exception for females seems an obvious violation of 14th amendment.

i think we need universal conscription, probably for 1 or 2 years, but long enough for basic training. exceptions can be made for medical personnel and other essential professions.

In my opinion they always should have been. But as I said, our view of women has come a long way in the last few decades. It is hard to imagine that just back to when I was in high school it was thought women would die if they ran more than 1500 meters.

The numbers needed were not enough to require a draft. It has nothing to do with how long it lasted.

I have often viewed the Selective Service requirement as some sort of loyalty test.

And yet no one has been drafted. Seems you should reach out to your representatives to propose getting rid of the non existent draft

The "and" is that a male can be denied jobs, financial aide and other things if they do not register. There is no reason to keep it going, but if we are going to, we need to include women as well.

It is complicated. We have draft registration. In all fairness, it should include women, if they are to be treated equally.

It is unlikely the draft will ever be needed because it unlikely that we would ever be involved in a war requiring that many people. Not impossible. Just unlikely. So the draft registration will likely continue.

I believe that most Americans oppose the draft of women. My own feelings are that I think about my grand daughters and great grand daughters and would never want them to be subjected to the horrors of war. I feel the same about grand sons and great grand sons, but not to the same degree. Somehow I believe males are better equipped to handle it. That may or may not be true. I suppose it has something to do with my old fashioned protective nature.

Perhaps I incorrectly assumed you were not in support of women in combat.

If someone refuses to register that's on them. It's a pointless exercise to register but until it's officially stopped one has to register. I'm ok with having women pointlessly register as well. But this isn't an issue anyone should be outraged about.

Yes that is what America needed.... hundreds of thousands of women dying in the trenches of the Civil War and WWI, women killing Japanese and Germans in WWII, women butchering their way through Korea and Vietnam... that is totally a sane concept. Don't protect women, expose them to the most barbarous conditions ever created by man, let the men stay at home.

All of this nonsense will fall by wayside the second the America engages in an existential battle (such as an internal civil war). When that conflict comes, it will be men doing the fighting and the dying.

Yawns. You can't get a student loan. BFD. Will this site tell me the last time a man had been drafted as well?

Because most (nearly all) women aren't capable of serving in combat roles. And for that matter, a huge portion of our fighting age our men are totally unsuitable for combat as well. Soldiers are made from deconstructing useless meat and reforging it into a war-ready instrument, not from some progressive pen-stroke or SJW law suit and not from a draft of unlucky of fodder either.

    Why do women need protecting?

This is the same stupid mindset that led to the fact they could not run more than 1500 meters at the Olympics till the 80s as chauvinistic men thought they needed protected and they would die if they ran more than a mile in a race.

Guess what, if a woman can qualify as a fighter pilot or make it through Ranger School or even Marine Corps boot camp, they do not need you protecting them. more than likely it will be the other way around.
