I have a map of the Northeastern quarter of the US on which is written across Niagra Falls the word "portage".
So it dates from when white people needed to know where to cross the river. The names of the Indian tribes that lived in the area defined on the map include many which were completely wiped out.

with regard to the colonization of the US was it really any genocides against natives. There were wars. But most died from illness.

First it was it Superior it was just more advanced. David's didn't even have the concept of a wheel.

Second the natives made the case by immediately adopting Western culture and abandoning their own. It absolutely halted wherever Western culture spread because Western culture was more advanced.

They invented some of the most horrific tortures in history and pursued some of the most violent occupations ever, called the Crusades. In many cases the soldiers went just for fun.
The American settlers of the 18th and 19th century were do8ng exactly what Europeans had been doing " in the name of God" for centuries.

Colonialism in Africa lasted less than 80 years, the discovery of quinine in the 1880's to roughly the mid sixties. Prior to that it was the same old conquer occupy and cultural amalgamation and replacement that's been around for millennia.
