Why the prayer at NASCAR event yesterday?

I had the TV on yesterday with the sound muted. It was a NASCAR event. I normally hate car racing and was trying to find the baseball game. I saw from the subtitles they were giving an evangelical prayer before the singing of the National Anthem. It was surreal, like something out of an alternate reality. Or maybe I was too drunk (did I dream it?). It was very hardcore with many references to Jesus our beloved Savior, blah blah blah. No attempt whatever to make it inclusive of other denominations or faiths.

I was flabbergasted. I've never seen anything close to this at any other sporting event. I mean making a captive audience sit through what amounts to a right-wing evangelical church service that could have been given by Pat Robertson. Maybe I misunderstood because the sound was down? Can someone explain this? I wonder how many non-Christians or secular folk in the audience were squirming in their seats afraid not to act as enthusiastic as their neighbor? This just smacks of religious fascism at its worst. I new NASCAR was saturated with right-wing thought and groupthink but this was something I never would have imagined happening in the "land of the free".

You said it right there. They are free to do it and your free not to watch it.

If you don't like it, don't attend. That is your 'freedom'. If the people in the stands don't like it, they will let it be known by not buying more tickets or writing lots of nasty letters about how their ear drums were burned out during the prayer.

And I thought Christians were sensitive.

For leftists, banning what they deem offensive = freedom.

Why Prayer? They're about to drive American cars around corners. They need all the help they can get.

Every Sprint cup race has the National Anthem and a Prayer and Military Planes flying overhead. Principles many see as patriotic. Something the left knows little about

You admit you had the sound off so you really don't know what happened, do you? This thread is a waste of time.

Just like a *******. Gets all upset about a prayer at a Nascar event, then goes to Walmart and fills up the cart and pays with food stamps.

Not trying to ban it. Just wondering why anyone would want to subject a captive audience to their version of Christianity. What does religion have to do with sports?

I checked around the web and it seems this is commonplace at NASCAR events. That surprises me because I've never heard of this. I wonder if there was any debate when this started happening?

The only debate about this I found was whether it was appropriate for the pastor to refer to his "smoking hot wife" during the prayer. It seems this pastor is more concerned with getting attention for himself than spreading the "glory of God".

But prayer doesn't stop anyone from getting killed or injured at these races. So why?

Right, which is why I asked other people to clarify it for me. Thanks for misreading my post.

You hate NASCAR so why do you care if they pray? NASCAR is a predominately southern tradition that involves ones love of racing, their country and christianity. I guess if a 30 second sermon is going to send you to therapy you should probably not attend nor watch it. There has been several times when I have been at an event and had to listen to some one drone on about something which I disagree, it happens either get over it, or dont watch.

Jesse Jackson and his rainbow coalition have already gone after NASCAR for not including black drivers, it didnt get very far, and he was not able to extort money out of them either. I guess there are just some things that liberals will not understand, and the tradition of a prayer before a NASCAR event is one of them.

If you hate god so much you should go live in a communist country, then you will never have to here about it.

Because they love God? Prayer is not always about asking for something. It is also about giving thanks and why not do so when so many are together? A little presence if some sort of accident happens wouldn't hurt either. :)

Wow. You seem to be displaying the same kind of intolerance that you accuse me of. Irony is a cool thing.

So, to clarify, if one does not like racing or the "Southern" brand of religion (whatever that is) then one is not welcome in the South? Looks like they haven't gotten segregationism out of their system yet, more's the pity.

Unlike the hit the ball with the stick game, these guys hurl rather heavy machines at triple digits around a circle at each other. The majority of the audience believes in a Christian God, and they pray for the drivers safety.

They won't take you out back and shoot you if you do not participate.

What can I say? Christians just love to see cars go real fast and crash into each other. It's like a non-nerd version of Battlebots.

We have something called religious freedom in this country. It should be obvious that most NASCAR fans are evangelical christians. It is good business to pray before an event and some people believe it.

You see...even though I do not agree with their religion, it is their right to worship as they see fit. It is also my right not to.

A prayer doesn't hurt anyone. I do not see any rights violated by prayer.

But I do see rights violated by not allowing it.

    Civil rights work both ways.

NASCAR is a PRIVATE CORP, and they can do as they choose. Naturally, being a Leftninny, you object to anyone else's Freedoms, in typical Leftninny fashion.

About 70% of America is Christian and you call a public prayer "alternate reality'?

Does the term "completely out of touch with the overwhelming majority of Americans" mean anything to you? We'll show you just HOW MUCH , Nov., 2012.

    Implied.

You find it offensive, ...to the point of creating a thread to question/belittle what others "subject" themselves to....

Is it really any of your (*)(*)(*)(*)ing business?

Is a 'secular' government not enough for you...must your leftist authoritarianism bleed over into every aspect of society?
