OK, folks, this has got to stop.

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/04/12/teen-liz-bierendy-mural-traditional-family_n_1421349.html

Basically a high school in Rhode Island has censored a 17-year-old student for creating a mural that was deemed "offensive" because it contained a man, a woman, and a child as a family. The rationale given was that the painting might be considered insensitive to those who do not adhere to the traditional family unit or who may practice "alternative lifestyles."

Now those of you who have debated me on gay marriage know that I am in favor for legal parity for all of our fellow citizens and that I am a strong supporter of gay rights, but good grief this is just ridiculous. This stuff has got to stop.

Apparently, people have the right not to be offended now...

No doubt the complainers were some uber-sensitive hyper-liberals.

I was following this story about a week ago and I don't think anyone actually complained but someone from the school, I believe the principal thought it wasn;t inclusive enough. I'm not sure how this one boys growing up through life could be "all-inclusive" Some men do marry women.

It offends me that this would be taken down. They should have to leave it up to keep from offending me. :)

I agree, people need to grow up and stop being offended by every stupid little thing. Everyone will be offended by something and you cannot make everyone happy, no matter how hard you try (or how many rights you take away from others).

Should we also ban all bright colors because colorblind cannot see them? They might be upset that you get to enjoy they don't.
Ban pets because some are allergic or don't like them?
Ban exotic cars because Mister Crackhead living down the street is upset he can't afford them?

I am offended by people being offended by those offenders!

So how should he have painted it...with a government run sperm bank on one side and a test tube on the other and a child in the middle?

Personally, I think it should go up. But I do see the logic behind it.

    That's just it....He souldn't have.

Leftist agenda is more readily advanced with a government dependent citizenry...
the strong nuclear family hinders development of government dependency...
therefore, all reference to, or acknowledgement of the strong nuclear family is verbotten....
and all efforts to actively destroy it ...
via incentivizing the single broodmare to remain single, for example....
    are ignored, minimized or obfuscated.

    See: the progressive welfare state.

If what you say is true, then the principal of this school should be fired immediately because he or she is a hopeless moron who needs to find another profession. Education is certainly not their bag.

Crazy idea here. Why don't they just send the offended people to the school counselor to talk about why they are offended since they are the ones from the broken families? Makes a lot more sense than punishing the healthy kids.

No, but two CPS officers holding the hands of the child, and the parents on their knees, handcuffed, might be most appropriate.

I think the implication was more two daddies or two mommies.

I'm interested to hear your thoughts on the "logic" that you see here.

Maybe because kids are SURROUNDED with images of the "ideal family" every day, and once in a while the principle wants something that will help ALL kids feel like part of society, not just the lucky ones who get the "perfect family".

Your agents of the state have no business defining, obfuscating or promoting who is or who isn't "lucky" or "ideal"

Its HR people run amok, who always happen to be Liberal. Liberals are already hyper sensitive to everything, but combined with people trying to out-think how hypersensitive someone can be, it all gets ridiculous. Its HR people trying to protect the company from anything and everything and school officials neutering all expression that might offend gays, blacks, Hispanics, atheists, ect, ect. Basically, even attempting to do anything that could possibly offend someone is off limits. Its gotten to the point of comedy. Then again, mobs of people screaming for the death of someone white & Jewish named Zimmerman, I mean Hispanic, I mean white/hispanic, is perfectly acceptable=) That and books claiming how perfectly normal and healthy it is to have 2 mommies or daddies instead of one of each, are fine. But refer to god during a pledge in school. Can't have that. Pledging allegiance to your country is so 1980. So offensive. What a joke liberals have become.

Actually, if you read the article, the mural was not censored. The principal suggested that it may be offensive, but when the student stood by her artwork, the school decided to let it stay as it is.

The principal asked the student to reconsider her piece, the student said no, and the principal dropped the issue.

That doesn't sound like indoctrination to me.

Sure it is....an authority figure suggesting her piece should be reconsidered because it may offend, indoctrinates the artist...likely, for the very first time in her life....to either see the nuclear family as offensive...or sensitize her to the notion.

So what? The principal offered the student an opposing viewpoint, and then allowed the student to decide if she agreed or not. Obviously, she disagreed because she later went on the radio to talk about how ridiculous it was.

Showing students opposing viewpoints and then giving them space to weigh each side and come to their own decision about them is about as far from indoctrination as you can get. That's actually called developing critical thinking skills.

If the prinicpal painted over the mural and forced her to paint a homosexual couple standing with a child, I'd agree it is indoctrination. This incident, however--I can't see anything wrong at all with the way it was handled.
