Prepping just makes sense. I keep failing to replace my water, but "I'll get to it".
It takes some practice to be properly prepared. I see a lot of people who say they just keep a palate of spam and bottled water. Try living on spam for more than about 3 days.
It's good to eat up your stuff before the expiration date, and rotate in new stock. That way, you know if your stores are even palatable.
This current era in America differs from the great depression, in that we have a whole new crop of feral youth that didn't exist in the 1930's. It's a good idea to familiarize yourself with the writings of people who lived through the economic collapse of Argentina, and the civil war in Kosovo. How else would you know that bic lighters are worth more than money for barter?

Has anyone in the USA been influenced to take precuatonary measures because of effects of Hurricane Katrina?

If I remember well the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina was characterized by extensive reporting of looting, violence, shooting against rescuers, murder and rape. The state was very slow to react.

Heh, nice slave training there. The best thing to do is be sensible and take precautions, not rely on some "higher authority" to take care of you. It's also important to work together and be mutually supportive, of course, and not be divided.

The problem with an "apocalyptic" scenario is that that trusted "authority" may not be there for you. That can happen when governments fail, and those can fail when economies fail, and the American economy is a disaster waiting to happen no matter what the banksters and their pets in politics and the media might pretend.

You don't need guns to be individualistic.

these preppers have been around for decades. The internet just feeds the infection through to a wider group ...

And the denialists accuse environmentalists of being doomsayers! Hah hah hah!

seriously, these people are insecure and want something to be afraid of .... they feel that their lives are out of control. By believing in a dommsday fantasy and prepping for it, they think they have control over something.

they don't. They just need to get a grip on themselves and offload some of that useless, unwarranted fear.

Here in California, a "Modern Day Apocalypse" could be a major earthquake. Would you rather rely on the authorities maybe keep you fed and somewhat sheltered, or rely on yourself? We are prepared for about a month of self-sufficiency, including keeping our cars loaded with 72 hour bags and items that can be improvised as weapons for self-defense. It's foolish to rely on services that are already stretched thin on a good day. Having been involved in local leadership programs, what I've learned is that it's us that need to take a role in helping others in times of disaster; not just waiting for bureaucrats to show up. If you aren't prepared mentally, physically, and with adequate resources for yourself and your family, then you will be part of the problem.

paranoia is nothing new. preppers lack the ability to think things through. A general collapse of society and virtually no one would be prepared to survive. Some people with way too much time on there hands.

That your transparent attempt to turn the survivalist culture into an anti-American screed is (*)(*)(*)(*)ing laughable.

You've missed the point. I don't think that doctors, lawyers, military and law enforcement officers lack the ability to think things through. As a matter of fact, if anyone could think things through is them.

For a city rather than an individual I'd suggest Glasgow would be the most likely to survive and the reason being because they look after each other.

Here they are racing in to help others after the helicopter crash last year

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-25167420

    http://www.independent.co.uk/news/u...nfusion-and-acts-of-selflessness-8976208.html

Here they are letting go of an attack by Unionists on Yes supporters after the Referendum by turning their attention instead to those in need

    http://www.sconews.co.uk/news/40370/foodbank-unites-glasgow-in-spirit-of-reconciliation-and-giving/

Islamic terrorists should have thought twice before trying Glasgow

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7gMJBQoHJ4E

and yesterday when a 30 ton truck ran wild after driver's suspected heart attack, killing people out doing their Christmas Shopping when asked whether the public had been helping the officer said, 'Oh yes and you would expect that. This is Glasgow'.

    http://www.heraldscotland.com/news/...hile-two-casualties-beside-me-died.1419295064

When the chips are down the city which will do the best I think is the one where the people have a natural feel for mucking in and helping when needed and for that I do not think you can beat Glasgow.

There is nothing new in this. In many countries, there are people stating all kinds of necessities to "save their lives in hard times". I visited forums of preppers and watched some interesting interviews taken from preppers of different kind in different states. Some keep pretty rich big houses built in private lands with underground rooms and shelters. They store a lot of grans, canned foods, salt, sugar, etc. They also have automatic machine guns to fend off "beggars", which would arrive and ask them to share their supplies. These people do not think that the beggars may come with machine guns of their own... This is certainly hardly a Christian way of thinking. I would suggest rather rely on ability of renewable resources and cooperation among the survivors. This is a sort of strange people. Some even discuss best pets in case of a disaster. Actually, most of them seem pretty poor survivalists, because they cannot think about how to do without high tech devices after the expected "disaster".

Americans do not like the idea of "cooperation", because it seems like an encroaching form of communism to some. Greed and fear rule.

look, it is sensible to be prepared for the unexpected, and when I lived in a remote community we always kept plenty of supplies, just in case. Where i was, flooding wasnt an issue, but a friend lived in another region, and During could be cut off for days ... but it was a long way to town for supplies anyway, so you made sure you always had what you needed and you grew your own as much as you could, and learnt to be pretty self sufficient. You kept lots of spare parts, so you wouldn't get stuck and i learnt more about mechanics in the first year i lived there than i had in the previous 22 years of driving. You had to be prepared for frequent breaks to electricity supply and telephone network. A lot of stuff you can work around, if you used your imagination and put systems in place that bypassed reliance on external systems.

You also learn to be part of a community, its your neighbours who will help you, and who will rely on you, when trouble hits.

all that is common sense though ... these preppers are going way overboard, and if a moderately severe disaster happens, they might end up being a liability.

But preparation for that kind of thing

There are always people who go overboard with just about anything you can think of. The great part about those people is that they get the rest of us to do a little more than we would otherwise. All of those prepper resources probably do a great deal more business with the casual concerned citizen than they do with the few who put their life savings into the process. What I also find is that these people are often innovative, coming up with unique ways to make scarce resources work in harsh environments. We love camping, and generally away from other people. My wife uses the prepper resources to find great ideas that we can use on our trips to make the most of limited resources and saves us money. For instance, we soak wine corks in alcohol to use as firestarters. Great in an apocalypse, I guess, but also great when camping on the damp, cold coast.

I am not sure how someone who is well prepared for disaster might be a liability. If they aren't relying on the authorities to provide for them, then there will be more for those who are unprepared and desperate.

Paranoia is normal. Everyone is paranoid, just to different degrees. Those that do not have any paranoia are psychologically abnormal. If you do not prepare for those things that can happen such as power outages that have lasted for a month during Winter, then you are just negligent. There are worse things that can happen that are possible in our society highly dependent on electricity, water, and local grocery outlets.

I was implying that it would be apocalyptic like, I don't believe much of the brainwashing bible. My concern is a little more down to earth and a very real threat of a currency collapse and with the over population it could get nasty. I'm not really sure how one would prepare for the end of the world. I think it would be all for nothing.

There is nothing wrong with being prepared for a possible disaster.

But there are always some people that take it way too far.

There are some DOOMSDAYER'S in some Mid-Western States that have deep bomb shealters as they prepare for Nuclear War.

Of course they never seem to understand that an all out Nuclear War would render the air Radioactive thus after a short time their air filtration systems would fail and they would die anyways!!

Yep. People have to combat normalcy bias and the tendency to deny problems they can't address properly. What's an urbanite to do, after all? Such a scenario would be, as you say, an absolute nightmare in such a setting, and there's no good way to 'prep' except to move out of there to a more rural setting before the SHTF..

Nope, if you were not paranoid to some extent, you would not live very long. Excessive paranoia can be a problem.

You are talking about a disorder, one of which I am very familiar with, but that does not mean paranoia is abnormal. Have you ever had a paranoid thought? Do you think you are abnormal? Like the old saying, just because you are paranoid does not mean you don't have enemies. Paranoia is healthy and manifests itself in very predictable ways. For instance, there is a paranoia about differences which sometimes is called racism but different is dangerous in terms of living in the the past and it is ingrained in man for survival reasons.
