Speaking of wages, do waitresses get paid a fair wage?

They get good tips if they do a good job. If they don't they get no tips. If they don't make tips then why not go get another job? But I'm not sure how they make money. Most waitresses seem to complain.

A lot of that is going to be a function of where they work. The higher the prices the better the tips as a general rule.

Hmmmm. Then why would they work at a low price place?

Have you asked all these waitresses you seem to be friendly enough with that they all complain to you about the money they make?

It depends on what restaurant hires them. Also, there is a factor of turnover in customers. I could see how a waitress in a restaurant that moves fast could make more money than one in a slightly more expensive restaurant that doesn't move so fast.

If they work as wait staff and accept the pay than they think it's fair enough to work and continue. I didn't think I was paid what I was worth as a security guard, so I stopped doing that.

The money a waitress makes isn't much, I bet they'd be happy if they made 150k a year but if that was basic starting rate it wouldn't be enough.

Everybody wants more money. The best way to increase income is to increase skill.

    The fat ones complain.

The attractive ones who flirt with old drunk dudes make a killing. Girl I'm friends with works at Hooters, and she's definitely not complaining about her wages.

Like most professions, the better you are the better the pay. A good, efficient and considerate waitress can make a killing. Flirting isn't necessary but being pretty certainly helps.

A friend of mine who recently worked in Vegas as a chef told me that they oftentimes make over 100k doing a job that almost anybody can do. The guy working the McDonald's drive-thru has a harder job.

They take an order, hand it to the kitchen, grab the food when it's cooked and walk it back to the customer.

Does everyone you know start at the top of their selected career? You start at the bottom unless you're privileged to be the kid of a top end restaurant owner.

This depends on a state. In IL, if a tipped employees tips + min wage don’t add up to regular hourly wage then the employee must be paid with regular hourly rate.

If the waitresses are making $2 an hour Then that's not fair.

My daughter was a waitress in a restaurant about a decade ago. With tips, she made $20/hour.

Wait staff are paid just enough to cover their taxes...and they're taxed according to the gross regardless of the tip.

If you know any actual wait staff you'll know that almost all of the comments on this thread are horse ****.

It's a hard physically demanding job that pays just decent...often less

Depending where you live, yes, it is. Especially if you are a kid right out of high school.

So, what you are saying is that taxation is theft? BTW, making $40k, you typically get more back in your tax return than you pay in.

Sorry that your world view is so limited.

$40K is NOT a lot of money anywhere

If they think it's a hard physically demanding job, then they should try asphalt paving in the summer. There are all sorts of jobs much tougher and more dangerous than waitressing.

Oh wait...if it's not the absolute toughest job on the planet it's not physically demanding.

That's what I think whenever I hear some broad complaining about an easy indoor job.

I forced my kid to take a job as a busboy at a Ruth's Chris steakhouse for half a year before he went off to college. A lesson in "That will be your life if you goof off and flunk out of college".

He said that some of the better waiters/waitresses made crazy good money.

That said, he's studying his ass off in college, because he now understands that working a waiter job is a seriously tough grind.

Yes, but they generally don't allow you to waitress with your butt crack hanging out*, so asphalting does have its advantages.

*- unless you work at Hooters, and you want to rack up big tips
