AB5 POISED TO GO NATIONWIDE: Biden’s Labor Secretary Just Threatened Independent Contractors.

Secretary Walsh thinks he knows better than you what arrangement is right for your life and your circumstances.

Uber nearly shut down in CA and the gig economy was only spared its death sentence because California voters passed a referendum that granted large exceptions to the law.

Nonetheless, Slo-Joe has voiced his support for the law and similar legislation that would reclassify independent contractors under federal law nationwide.

We need to get these meddlesome clowns out of our business asap. Weird how with all the problems in our country, this is what they want to focus on.

It just hit me. Now I understand why lefties always talk about how whites oppress other races. They think voluntarily working gig jobs is slavery.

Prop 22 shut it down in CA.

If it happened here, similar initiatives ( in the states that allow initiatives ) should follow and beat it down, easily. Unless it becomes a federal law, and it wont happen. Manchin won't go for it, and it's dead in the water if they can't get 50 votes, let alone 10 votes from the senate.

Anecdotally, a friend of mine worked for UBer for six years, and he joined a class action lawsuit, Uber paid him, and a few hundred thousand other drivers, $10k each, because they didn't compensate drivers a mileage fee for use of their vehicles. Prop 22 was the result of AB5 and lawsuits like that. UBer has been sued 3 or 5 times now, at least two were by the same law firm. Prop 22 forces them to pay .30 cents a mile, and pay $1200 per quarter which they can apply to their health insurance costs.

I understand dems sentiment, but still, Im against ending the independent contractor relationship, which is how I've made a living most of my life, as a photographer and a musician. I would rather see a union for ICs rather than making them employees, which is a can of worms, for the IC world.

The easiest thing is if you don't like working as an IC, don't.

Buy American! Support local people who made an income choice!

Gig work is a choice some people make when they have a need for money, odd available hours, or want a supplement to their existing income. And you feel you have a right to tell them they can't.

So you think Union workers don't have someone else setting their pay rates, when they can work or when they can't, and where?

I did that for 35-40 years as a mason and electrician..Nobody wanted my electronics experience.

You see I refused to work for companies that give you pee test or shadow your private life.

Great. So the efforts to screw Uber are unwarranted.

Tax law for determining who is an employee vs. an IC is complicated. Benefit laws have their own set of rules for determining who is an employee vs. an IC. So do HR laws, lol.
    They don't all agree.

It's complicated. The free market solution would be for a firm to start up that hires drivers as employees and if all the drivers leave Uber for that company, we will have the answer. Of course, people using Uber will have higher fares.

Simply not true. My BIL has been working such a job arrangement for more than 2 decades. He was an engineer for ATT and got laid off. His boss also got laid off and started a private contracting company doing the exact same thing they were doing and contracted out to ATT. He has now done this for 20 years. His only "benefit" is higher pay that allows him to choose is own insurance. He has also worked from home for those 20 years.

He would not trade what he has for anything.
