Collectivist say that Hillary won the popular vote and she should be president. The electorial college Is how elites thort the will of the people.

Conservatives say that without the electorial college, States with smaller populations would have no representation, Break away, and form their own government.

Are you a Democrat that likes the electorial college?

Are you a conservative's that hates the electorial college?

Kind of torn on this. The very instant the Electoral College is revoked in favor of popular vote, half or more of the states (and many areas within blue states) will instantly begin real secession movements which will result in insolvent corrupt blue cities going under rather quickly. As appealing as that thought is, not sure whether it's time for that or not.

I was told by some local democrats on this forum that most democrats like the electorial college. I don't think that is true. I see them moan about it all the time.

I think the electoral college is a necessity to maintain our Republic. Mob rule is not a new idea and it doesn't work very well. I can see why democrats who want to destroy America would desire mob rule. All part of bringing America down to the level of the rest of the world. Democrats believe that Americans have had it too good for too long I need a taste of life outside America.

I'm an independent and have voted both ways. I'm sure I will again but right now I stand with the Democrats. Yes, the popular vote should rule. A lot of people would not like Hillary to be president but you have to admit that a lot MORE didn't want trump to be president.

I could argue either side. However, after the election is over, it is time for the losers to shut up. They knew the rules going in.

Yes. I've felt that way for a long time. Not just because trump is in the White House. Any and every time in your life that you have voted for something you voted in a 'majority wins' election except when it comes to the POTUS and it just doesn't make sense.

Kind of reminds me of a Democrat primary and superdelegates. Bernie wins the votes and Hillary gets all the delegates.

Do you feel that a lot of democrats agree with you?

I'm an independent and I believe we need the electoral college to maintain balance. Our forefathers had the wisdom to realize that balance was important to keeping the republic from falling apart.

How would I know? I don't need their approval to have my own opinion.

It has nothing to do with Hillary.

The big question is: Why should some people's vote count more than that of others, depending purely upon where they live?

Do you know why the electoral college was started to begin with? Because the aristocrats who formed out country didn't thing that "Common people" were smart enough to understand the issues that this nation faced. The electoral college was DESIGNED so that they people THOUGHT this country was a democracy, but that the ruling elite could put whomever they wanted in charge of actually electing the President.

The constitution was specifically worded so that states can appoint EC delegates however and whenever they want. They CAN hold public elections, but most states don't. In most states, the delegates are just appointed either by the government or by majority vote by the state legislatures. 27 States actually have laws on the book so that delegates do not have to vote for the candidate who won the popular vote in their district. So whichever party controls the government in their state can simply appoint delegates who will vote for their candidate regardless of the popular vote.

In fact, a number of delegates from red states came out in opposition to Trump and vowed to not vote for him. A delegate in Texas, was removed by the Texas state legislature because he publically came out as a never Trumper and replaced with a delegate who would support Trump. There isn't even a deadline for the removal of delegates. They can be removed at any point before the first day of voting.

The Founding Fathers wisely instituted the electorial college to ensure president's were elected by a majority of states and not the large urban centers. Why would we want to change what has worked for 232 years? Any attempt to revise the constitution would essentially be a wasted effort because the bar is too high! You would have to have a two-thirds vote in the Senate, as well as the states. Not going to happen!

If we didn't have the electoral college, we would have the Hunger Games. Where the blue collar districts are submissive to the white collar capital, for the sole reason they can out vote them because of shear population.

Could you imagine what the urban centers would do to the farmers if the farmer had no representation?

Democrats hate the electoral college long before Hillary, simply because the majority of their voters are in urban centers... and they think they are better and smarter than the rural folks.

The electoral college is essential to fair representation.

Do you hear Democrats say they want to scrap it. I've been told that's not true even though I see it all the time. I made this thread to prove a point to 2 locals here.

The "yes" alternative is skewed badly to the point that it is ridiculous. Absolutely no one is challenging the results of the 2016 election.

It is not an issue of states' rights. It is an issue of the people's right. Trump's fans conveniently forgot that persons living in CA and N.Y. are people, too. They are also Americans.

CA has 55 electoral votes. Each voter represents 709,000 people.

MT has 3 electoral votes. Each vote represents 335,000 people.

What does that mean exactly? It means that an individual voter MT is worth 2.11 times the voter in CA.

The farmer or rancher in MT has 2.11 times the representation of a doctor, lawyer, scientist, or college professor in CA.
