For heavens sake, it was Xanax, an antidepressant. Do you have any idea how many people take it? I had some with me when I made my 'hadge' to Jerusalem because I have difficulty sleeping. :steamed:

He would be in prison in the US if he was caught with 20,000 Xanax.

Hmmm! You're not supposed to take more than three, so I guess they weren't for sleeping?

That's a good question. Besides, who would want twenty thousand Xanax, and why isn't Xanax allowed in Saudi Arabia? Also shouldn't those who want the drug be arrested as well, I mean somebody must want to buy it or he wouldn't be bringing it in? Something smells mighty fishy here? :fishing:

They probably are!! Merely thinking about Xanax or saying a word that begins with the same letter is probably good for twenty lashes in Saudi Arabia.

We're talking about the country that banned valentine's day, including teddy bears, heart shaped boxes of chocolate, etc.

It is the human rights vacuum of the world, topped in terms of brutal oppression by at most North Korea, and the people live in extreme oppression, except of course the royal princes who run the country and sniff cocaine off the backs of prostitutes in elaborate parties at their royal palaces.

If you are a foreigner in Saudi Arabia, you get even LESS rights than the people there, even the women there, who get stoned to death for the crime of being raped!!

If someone ELSE causes a traffic crash and drives into you in an accident that is one hundred percent THEIR fault, but they are a Saudi man and they die thanks to their own negligence, and you are a foreigner who was obeying all rules of the road, then YOU will be punished for the crash and their death, based on the argument that you are a foreigner, and had you not been there, you wouldn't have been on the road for them to crash into and kill themself, therefore it's your fault.

Anyone who even decides to GO to Saudi Arabia is an idiot. For all we know she didn't really even bring all those Xanax pills and this is being faked by the Saudi authorities. She's still an idiot for even going to that place.

STAY THE (*)(*)(*)(*) AWAY FROM SAUDI ARABIA.

This is a warning for everybody!

Tell it to the tens of thousands of Americans who have lived and worked in Arabia for the past 7 decades.

If you get caught with 20,000 pills in the US you go to jail.

There's good money to be made in Saudi Arabia! People lower themselves into dangerous mine shafts to make money.

In some cases I'm sure you do but you don't get lashes.

Interesting choice of thread title. It makes it sound as though he went to jail for something having to do with his work regarding human rights. But the accurate thread title should be "Prescription drug smuggler sentenced to 5 years and 300 lashes". And you left out the even more ironic part: If you are arrested in America with 20,000 Xanax you would get far more than 5 years. We have some of the most draconian laws in the world regarding drugs.

    seriously!

are we to believe he took a suitcase with 22,000 tablets and nothing else with him through Cairo Security when they are all on top alert of anything suspicious going through the x ray with all the artifacts being looted!

Saudi law does not allow him a lawyer to represent himself in court

    SO

we have a court that shows no evidence we can check, no lawyer to check, the guy is well known in Saudi for trying to help detained Egyptians in the same situation and is a well known human rights lawyer

could it be that they wanted him silenced for a while?........................................

Yes but how do the lashes thing plays out, there are set lashes per year or the number of lashes is divided by tablets ?

Egypt justice system is medieval and ridiculous .

What you have posted could be the actual facts but would it not have been easier to plant a small amount of for example heroine on him instead. But, I cant see how he can have hoped to smuggle 20000 tablets so probably he has been set up. But two others were also sentenced which makes the case even more complicated

This is happening in Saudi Arabia, not Egypt. The lawyer is Egyptian.

Smh... I take it most people just read the title of threads and then comment.

of course it is a set up!

not even the craziest drunken drug smuggling expert would do something that mad!

they want to silence any human rights activists or lawyers who try to highlight the abuses

they couldn't stop him by visa because he was going to do his pilgrimage to they had to issue the visa but then planted the drug suitcase on him as he went through immigration
