Biden says he'd like live onscreen fact checks to combat Trump 'lies' during debates

Democratic candidate and former vice president Joe Biden said he would like an onscreen fact check ticker to counter Donald Trump’s "lies" during the upcoming debates.

Speaking at a campaign event to lay out his plan for reopening schools in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, Mr Biden said he is preparing for the debates by going over everything the president has said and the "multiple lies" he’s told.

“It would make a great debate if everything we said was instantly fact-checked by an agreed to group of people," he said, before conceding that it probably wouldn't be possible. He added: "I'm looking forward to debating the president, and I'm going to lay out as clearly as I can what I think we have to do to bring this country back and build it back better, and I'm looking forward to the debates."

What an interesting proposal, we could have a conservative fact checker and a liberal fact checker and then a non-partisan fact checker and see who tells the most lies. This should be a prerequisite at any event like this where the truth is so important — except to some — and could definitely sway some votes one way or another.

trump would like drug tests and Biden would like fact checkers. I suggest some middle ground and we have both.

I don’t think trump will allow this under the guise of ‘fake news’, ‘deep state’, ‘rino’, ‘socialism’, or other buzzword of the day.

 

The difficulty is that many claims are nuanced and fact checkers don't often have the time to do fact checking "on the go".

I think it's up to citizens to know enough to go back and review the debate and see who told the truth.

Hell, Biden can't even remember where he is these days anyways.

 

Sounds like a great idea to me, Dirty Donald will have to keep his mouth shut because when he opens it all he utters are lies.

 

They could fact check facts that don’t require nuance, like Did the Continental Army take over the airports from the British during the American Revolutionary War?
What is the national debt?
Did the economy grew at the fastest ever under trump?
Has trump released a healthcare plan?
How many of trump’s associates have been arrested?

Things like that

If they're easy facts, sure. A lot of claims aren't so easy to fact check. CNN, for instance, did a horrible job fact checking Trump's acceptance speech.
Frankly, the debates are more of a spectator sport for people interested in politics. I don't have any data, but my guess is they don't actually sway that many people.

 

Is this because Biden himself does not know what is happening in the world today? Do we want that from a potential president?

 

Probably wants someone like CNN or Media Matters or Rachel Madcow to do the fact checking.

 

You know, I bet Biden would be really fun to have a beer with and talk about politics in the 1960s. Bless his heart. When my grandfather started to decline mentally, he could remember everything that happened in the 1930s, but couldn't tell you where he was.

That would be awesome, though I it would take an entire team of fact checkers to keep up with Trump's lie-vomit stream.

 

He did release the outline of a plan that I thought was going to go in the direction I wanted: Segmented markets to reduce costs as well as to make it optional to participate. But then he dropped it and Republicans were unsavvy to make such a plan work.

 

Politics isn’t a sport, people acting like it is are what has destroyed this nation.

How did CNN do a horrible job? Was the information inaccurate?

We should demand truth, transparency and integrity from our elected officials. Not make excuses for them

Well, he did graduate top of his class in law school, and earned four - no wait - three - no wait - two - ummm... one degree.

 

The plan here is obvious. Biden's handlers can't let him debate so they will make this rediculous demand that Trump will never agree to and then bow out of the debates and blame Trump.

 

I really question Biden's story of the hairy leg rubbing. And we need some evidence to know whether that's where he learned about roaches, too.

 

Most of us aren't sure that Trump graduated high school. Has he released any transcripts? He always seems so keen on seeing everyone else's.

I don't recall seeing Trump brag about that. However, we have documented evidence of Biden lying about it. Sorry. Biden's a liar. However, he's old, and we could, for sake of his age, give him the benefit of doubt. We just can't do that and allow him to be President.
