Some 2 % of our homicides involve the use of a firearm yet around 70% of US homicides involve their use

Ergo the rate of murder in the US is nearly five times ours.

The simple fact is guns make killing far too easy and thats a fact few of our American friends are going to be acknowledging any time soon because the legal possessing those guns matter more than that simple truism .... or indeed the lives of their victims

But as long as it isn't their lives but the lives of someone elses loved ones .... why care ?

You may think we can exclude logic because of the telly you watch. Other folk think otherwise

Thanks. Unfortunately many Americans won't because of a policy stance that is free of evidence-based sense. Its jolly nice that the UK is a little more cunning!

Would it be preferred if the rate of killing remains unchanged, but the methodology of the killing is something other than a firearm? The same number of deaths will occur regardless, the only difference will be the tool that was used. Why exactly does the utilized tool matter more than the fact that people are being murdered without regard?

And if a gun were a tool you might be right. Most infants in the rest of the developed world already know that a gun is a lethal weapon and not a tool. Calling it thus is just an attempt at downplyaying its inherent lethality.

This obvious reality would not need explaining to anyone outwith the US

But you are using lethal purpose built weapons to kill one another with... not tools

Until the Americans stop liking the idea of killing easily nothing will ever change. Given that over the last 50 years 80% or more of Hollywood output has involved gunplay in one form or another don't expect that pre programmed mindset to be changing any time soon

Ultimately gun violence is seen as entertaintment and something to be admired and if possible emulated :(

80%? Really? According to this it's less than one in five. Just saying.

But that would be "typical" not surprising and SOP for an anti.

Your on very thin ice there bud. If I am wrong by all means prove that. Because that link most certainly didn't

Your society sees gun violence as entertainment and as a consequence tolerates it far more easily than elsewhere in the developed world. The numbers tend to speak for themselves on that one :(

I don't think there is any psychological analysis into the impact of holding a screwdriver. That's a shame, it makes it look like the objective research is trying to destroy the pro-gunner cliche....

So how many people get killed by guns vs screwdrivers every year ?

You get my point I hope

It's your claim. The onus is upon you to provide proof.

Are there any of those movies that don't enjoy box office success everywhere in the world, including the UK?

Unlike the US though as with the likes of the Vegas shooter we don't need nor want to have the legal facility to live out such Hollywood fantasies. And our respective societies are so much the better for that

Killing isn't glamorous despite Hollywood :(

But you have the legal facility. Last I knew, CZ 452s and double barrel 12 bore shotguns are still legal to own.

And how many of those were used to kill here last year then ? Probably less than lightning strikes

Yet the people of the UK still possess the facility. That's the point. Opportunity is not just a US trait.

The relative gun fatalities tell a vastly different story but I know you guys aren't very good with those
