    "Catholic University."

I guess the OPer doesn't understand what that means.

What better could a college graduate put on his/her resume that "knowledgeable in Kansas LGTB history." That would put the person to the top of the list as it is among the most sought after skills of potential employees.

I know it's the name of a specific school, but this is just another college that is also Catholic. What am I missing?

A private religious university such as this should not be expected to present ideas that go against their faith, especially not in a positive way.
If a private university bills itself as postmodernist it should not be expected to present ideas that go against that ideology.
All public colleges and universities should be required to be an open marketplace of all ideas.

if it's a private school they can do as they wish, if a public school they have to not discriminate

as a private school they could even say women can't teach men if they want too

If any uni receives public funds, including such as GI bill monies, they should be open and objective.

According to Catholic beliefs, homosexuality is a sin. You don't celebrate sin.

    Simple stuff.

Private organizations can support views in line with theirs and exclude others.

Public schools cannot (should not) exclude opinions they deem offensive, especially if those opinions are in the American political mainstream.

    Is this difficult to understand?

So then why does the school tolerate having an LGBT club on campus?

In general it's not difficult to understand.

But I'd like to know...how do you define within the American mainstream? If going to UC/Berkeley to talk about opposing gay marriage is ok, where do we say it exits the American mainstream? Some would say conversion therapy, but our vice president has supported that. How about the idea of jailing homosexuals? Or banning doctors from assisting people with transitions to the other gender? I'm just curious what counts as "in bounds" here at a public university.

And as for a private university, are they free to be as strict as they want in terms of free speech?

It isn't political at all. So, neither of those hypotheses would be correct.

I do agree, if they get public funds, they have to be fair and not discriminate

Ironically it was the catholic church that pushed hardest for that in the past because evangelicals were locking them out of public schools with their message

Unless they have a specific rule forbidding pro-LGBT events from taking place, how exactly is it not political?

Private universities can do basically whatever they want. There's nothing wrong if a conservative church or school wants to keep liberal speakers off their property, and there's nothing wrong with a liberal church not allowing conservatives to speak at their institution.

Public schools should not be allowed to bar speakers based on political viewpoint unless that viewpoint advocates violence. A liberal school administration should not keep a conservative like Ben Shapiro from speaking. A conservative school administration (good luck finding one) should not keep Bernie Sanders from speaking.

People with any sort of negative view of LGBTQ issues are not allowed to speak at most public universities or campuses.

It's a Catholic University and one of the beliefs is that living the gay lifestyle is a sin, not being gay. The church is not in the business of promoting sin. Nothing political. It's church doctrine. It's difficult to talk about when there is no way to see what was in the displays or literature. I don't see the importance of having the display at a Catholic University, when there are other places which could hold the art display and advertising could be utilized to make folks aware of the importance of the display to the LGBTQIA community. If it is important to achieve the goal of eduation abou the history of the gay culture in the area, it may be more beneficial to actually have folks come to the display. Now, this would give them greater attendance by making folks curious, but it is quite disingenuous. Whatever gets them air time, I guess. I doubt there are that many who would have attended otherwise, and it seems they knew that.

If the university is public, then there is an issue. If it is private, you go in knowing that they have some rules. If you don't believe in those rules, don't apply.
