Incredible amount of power. That's about the equivalence of the 5 largest nuclear power plants in the world combined. And that's just their off-shore wind.

    https://www.offshorewind.biz/2023/0...d-solar-targets-five-years-early-report-says/

And with a total of 310 GW of total wind, that is the equivalent of 50 of these huge nuclear plants.

Operating offshore wind capacity in China has reached 31.4 GW and accounts for approximately 10 per cent of the country’s total wind capacity which has doubled from 2017 and now exceeds 310 GW, according to a report from Global Energy Monitor (GEM), a US-based non-profit organisation that tracks fossil and renewable energy projects worldwide.

Just in case you want the link for the nuclear plants, which produce radioactive waste that has to be contained for tens of thousands of years (who's going to maintain this stuff?)

Not really concerned with nuclear. I'd be more interested in China's insane construction of new coal-fired powerplants.

I'm really impressed, in that kind of mortified at the West's stupidity way, by China's ability to thoroughly play and humiliate the progressive West (including the good old USA) by talking them into shooting their economies and energy capabilities in the privates while they get designated as a "developing economy" that allows them to not even begin to think about reducing CO2 until 2030.

    Absolutely stunning.

Yes, I agree that China needs to do something about their coal burning. And you're also correct that they have been expanding at a very rapid pace. I just read about a new massive canal that is being built there, that will enable them to market much more effectively to Southeast Asia. That said, it would be a lot worse if not for their renewable infrastructure. We think we have a lot of wind capacity in the US. China has over twice as much.

They also have advantages in things like slave labor and no real remorse about really toxic stuff like mining lithium. That, and they really don't give a darn what the sissies in the West think they should do.

If we continue on our course to make internal combustion engines illegal, China (ie.- BYD) will simply undercut Tesla's (and everybody else's, assuming any other manufacturer survives until then) pricing. And poof! China owns the world's market on vehicles.

Fortunately, I probably won't live that long to witness that totalitarian hell on earth.

They said that about IC chips. Biden took care of that with the Chips/Science bill. At one time, everybody fear-mongered about Japan taking over the auto industry. Look how that worked out - partnering arrangements which benefitted America and a better quality car started being built in America. Ian Musk uses a lot of Chinese labor. He doesn't call them "slaves". He calls them "hard-working".

All of which is still useless trivia and thoroughly beside the point of anything.

If you're really paying attention, you'd have noticed that the Federal government has finally gone, for the first time in US history, full totalitarian in controlling what can be sold in the US. Not just regulating pollutants, of which CO2 is not by the way, but actually telling people what kind of light bulbs and vehicles they can and cannot buy.

Biden has set a goal to regulate internal combustion engines out of existence in this country by 2035. The latest round of proposed EPA CO2 regulations for model years 2027 through 2032 that were issued for public comment a few months ago requires (hard stop requires) 67% of new vehicles in 2032 be EVs.

That's the level of totalitarian stupidity we've actually reached. And, as an aside, under these EV mandate regulations Tesla has already legally stolen through existing EPA mandates $9 billion from other manufacturers.

Now I've already laid out all the references needed in these forums previously so you can do your own research without me holding your hand, but these totalitarian mandates are guaranteed to be absolutely ruinous to western economies that have been sucked into this "climate change" BS. However, there is still hope that it can be stopped in June when the Supreme Court is largely expected to overturn the environmentalist driven decisions of both Chevron and Massachusetts.

Normal folks should pray that it does and the whole anti-human climate change fraud gets relegated to the dust bin of historical totalitarian disasters narrowly avoided.

Nothing like a little fear-mongering. Nobody is going to force you to give up your gas-guzzler.

Regarding Chinese wind power claims, Ronald Reagan's caution seems appropriate: Trust but verify.

I agree with that statement. As of this time, the offshore power plant is on-line. Whether or not the capacity is accurate, or what percentage of the capacity is realizable, I cannot say. Perhaps you have a link?

My 35+ year career as an automotive engineer working for both the automotive industry and the Federal government has given me a lot of experience working with EPA. I'm not fear-mongering. That's what the climate zealots do.

I'm serious as a heart attack.

Nope. I just know that all their previous pronouncements, especially about coal, were monuments to mendacity.

I respect your experience and feedback on the automotive industry. I looked through that article. Nowhere in there do I see anything talking about forcing you or any other American citizen to give up your ICE car. I happen to agree with the cause and effect reasoning behind the article - that countries throughout the world, in an overall sense, need to transition away from fossil fuels. That implies nothing on an individual case-by-case basis. For example, it's unlikely that switching to EVs is feasible in very Northern climates. The batteries simply do not operate very well in the extreme cold climates. This is also true of ICEs, which are much more inefficient in cold climates, but they can still be driven for a fairly long distance successfully.

The real problem is that EVs are technically inferior to ICE and will likely remain that way forever. Their weakness is based on the fact that the motors instantly go to full torque. Works great if you're wired to the electrical plant. Doesn't work great if you're wired to a fixed charge capacity device like a big battery. Increasing load on the motors linearly increases current draw and sucks the battery dry very quickly. That's why things like towing capacity in an EV is rarely advertised. That's the practical death of EVs- doing work.

EPA also, because of their CO2 reduction mandate, is ultimately going to be forced to kill ICE in all kinds of work vehicles and, indeed, dang near everything else from semi trucks to road pavers to mobile crane rigs to pavers to combines to lawn mowers.

Consider that the Tesla semi advertises a 500 mile range. An ICE semi can be outfitted with 2 300 gallon fuel tanks for a 4800 mile range. Enough to drive around the borders of the country without refueling.

Work is the enemy of EVs. And government forcing their adoption is a foreseeable disaster.

    It's a pity nobodies listening.

Now that's a different argument than being forced get rid of your ICE car. I certainly agree that EVs don't have the energy density that gasoline has, and yes, despite improvements they have a substantially shorter range. Personally, my next EV will be purchased with the smallest battery capacity possible. I see no sense in carry all those heavy batteries around for one trip in a thousand. Most of my driving is far less than 120 miles (depends on the make and model). The latest technology is boasting an 80% charge in about 8 minutes. I don't mind stopping to take a leak during that one-in-a-thousand trip.

China remains the world's largest emitter of greenhouse gases.
Climate Bureaucrats Give China a Free Pass
    Oliver McPherson-Smith
China’s annual greenhouse gas emissions have soared over the past 20 years, dwarfing those of the U.S. But according to our progressive federal bureaucrats, America’s cumulative historical emissions are the…

No doubt a concern, but the US is also a major concern.

Per person, China's emissions are about half those of the US, but its huge 1.4 billion population and explosive economic growth have pushed it way ahead of any other country in its overall emissions.

    https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-china-57483492

While all countries face problems getting their emissions down, China is facing the biggest challenge.

So yes, China is a key, and they definitely have a long way to go. However at the same time, they are doing more than any other country.

China generates more solar power than any other country. That might not be so impressive given China's enormous population, but it is a sign of where the country is heading.

China's wind power installations were more than triple those of any other country in 2020.

China says the proportion of its energy generated from non-fossil fuel sources should be 25% by 2030, and it is expected by many observers to hit the target early.

And here is a little known fact about Chinese efforts.

China is getting greener at a faster rate than any other country, largely as a result of its forestry programs designed to reduce soil erosion and pollution.

Regarding your criticism of China - why do you care? You don't even acknowledge AGW. Personally, I'm more concerned about Russia. They are doing nothing (still less than 1% of electricity comes from wind and solar). Certainly their wars do nothing except make problems worse. Summary - US - a long way to go. China - a longer way to go. US - ramping up solutions. China - ramping up solutions at a quicker pace. Russia - a long way to go - doing nothing.

Yes, and you can also say that the 1.4 Billion Chinese require a lot of food and agricultural resources. So should their government make the people starve to fix the problem?

It's actually quite relevant. You are complaining about China's CO2 emissions, and yet they have half the per capita CO2 emissions than the US. You claim that's irrelevant. It is not. China continues to install more greenhouse gas reducing technology than the US (more than double in the last 2 years).

So basically your argument is that China should not be industrializing (attempting to make life better for its citizens). This is akin to saying that China has a large population, and because of global food resource issues, they should not be attempting to feed their population (make life better for its citizens).

The point is that China is working towards a goal So is the US. Anybody from the US who is critical of China's efforts and results, is a hypocrite.

Yeah I don't think the atmosphere cares.

Plus who are we getting this information from? China? I've seen videos of them painting trees and rocks on the side of the road with huge trucks spraying paint 50 to 100 yd off the side of the road.

I've also seen where they'll take a piece of rebar and drive it into the ground and glue a rock on top of it and spray paint that green. This is a facade.

The third video they're making fake rice out of plastic and paper.

If Chinese industry is willing to poison and possibly kill children with fake rice they do not give a **** about the planet

It was very hard not to put up a video about gutter oil.

Pretty much everything that comes out of China you should just be suspicious of it being absolute bullshit.

Look at the links they're willing to go to to lie about being green.

What the truth? Thousands of videos of China's construction projects collapsing meaning falling over and saw one where the ship was launched and dumped right over.

They aren't really good at building things. Probably because all of their inspectors are easily bribed.

If you're putting in China on a pedestal your cause is hopeless.

Just be the slightest but skeptical.
