COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The College Park City Council has voted in favor of a measure that would allow city residents who are not U.S. citizens to vote in local elections.

College Park joins six other towns in allowing legal permanent residents and undocumented immigrants to vote in municipal elections.

The council's vote on this issue was supposed to happen back in August, but it was postponed due to threats made to council members over the proposal.

It was a very contentious debate inside College Park City Hall as almost two dozen people signed up to speak on the matter during Tuesday night’s meeting.

One man against the proposal came to the podium saying he was called a Nazi while waiting in line to voice his opinion.

“The reality is allowing all people to vote in municipal elections is going to make College Park more inclusive, and that has been the history of voting rights expansion in the United States and what has happened in our neighbors in Maryland who have expanded voting rights to non-U.S. citizens,” said Todd Larson, who is in favor of the proposal.

“Although you come up here and you say that there are hundreds of citizens and residents of College Park that are for this charter, I can tell you that there are thousands against it,” said Beth Debrosky, who is against non-citizen voting. “Voting is a right of the citizens. It's plain and clear. It's constitutional. It's also written at the state level and it also belongs at the local level.”

The left have outdone themselves on this one.

illegal immigrants are the economic and voter base of the democratic party, Americans are too entitled for wanting 'living wages' and free stuff to belong.

Actually, it rarely does. Usually non citizens refers to people holding green cards. There isn't anything illegal about them.

But this is a Mexihate thread, in case you hadn't already noticed.

Because they are illegal. aka they are breaking the law and this move is to use their illegality to vote for your party. That had to be explained to you?

Answer me this if you can. Why should someone who broke the law to get here and is here illegally be given the right to vote? I can't wait to see this spin.

the way the rich exploit the H1B visa program, legal immigrants lower wages for skilled jobs the same way illegal immigrants do for unskilled jobs.

allowing them voting privileges will just further that.

It's racist that they only allow people who live in College Park to vote on issues there. They should allow foreign countries to vote in their elections.

It's totally legal and constitutional for local and/or state governments to allow non-citizens to vote in elections for local and/or state offices. Citizenship is only required to vote in elections for federal offices.

It's totally legal and constitutional on the federal level, as long as the vote isn't for a federal office (President, U.S. House or U.S. Senate).

Cities are allowed to determine who can vote in their elections for their offices. As long as the non-citizens aren't voting in federal elections, there is no problem.

Pretty racist to assume all illegals are Mexican.

Not to mention laughably wrong. Please educate yourself on the topic.
