...why someone who issues such a challenge almost certainly has contempt for his or her parents?

Name me one unselfish reason to have a child.

    Well, name one?

Name one that doesn't start with "I"

Is it wrong to have selfish reasons?

Absolutely not for any reason. In fact, bringing a kid into this world is totally selfish.

Nothng wrong with being selfish, it's simply doing what you want to do....whether you have a kid or if you decide not to.

Fair enough. I can think of a couple of reasons to have a child that is not selfish. One is to be a surrogate. That is an extraordinary gift, even if it's paid for. Another is for family. I'm not terribly interested in having kids again, but my (2nd) wife is younger, and her family really, really loves children. For her and for the family I'm open to the idea and I know that I'll raise them well. On the other hand, if we didn't have kids, I wouldn't be disappointed. Since there wouldn't be any disunity in the family if we didn't have kids, I can say without a doubt that my reasons are not all selfish, even if some are.

Notice all the "I " s in your post.....that makes all your reasons selfish....not wrong but selfish.

Have you ever thought of the child's viewpoint?

    Again, for everyone:

Name me one unselfish reason to have a child.

    Well, name one?

Name one that doesn't start with "I"

Putting I's in my post makes all of my reasons selfish? Ridiculous. I gave the following reasons:

    1. Wife wants one.
    2. In-laws want more grand children.

No "I's" in there, so by your logic, the reasons aren't selfish.
Why would doing so make the reasons more or less selfish?

You want to please your wife?

You want to please your inlaws?
Did you want to please the child? Was that a consideration?

The point is people do things for selfish reasons(they want something)

If you notice I never said it was wrong.

It is fine to be selfish and get what you want.

However, being selfish and having a child involves someone else, the child, so that kind of selfishness includes another.

And most people don't think about how that child will feel or be affected, they only want what THEY want.

Deciding not to have a child affects no one else....not even a child.

And some people call that selfish as if it's bad.

Did I say that? If I had, I would have listed it as a motivation. Ascribing motivations to me is a strawman.

There is no child yet, so it would be hard to please someone that does not yet exist.

Everyone is self-centered. It's impossible not to be, as you cannot possibly be centered in someone else. The mistake you make is to conflate self-centeredness with selfishness.

What evidence do you have to support that assumption?

Well, I don't disagree there. I'm all for people following their own conscience on this, or any matter.

I fail to see why you're arguing.....IF you read my posts you will see where I repeatedly say there is nothing wrong with being selfish....I can't make it any clearer so you must have a problem.

""""There is no child yet, so it would be hard to please someone that does not yet exist.""

The POINT is that not many people think of what the POTENTIAL child might feel about being brought into this world...it's all about what THEY want.

And to me , that's more selfish than not having a child because that decision affects NOone else.

My evidence? The fact that when you ask people why they want to have a kid it always starts with the word "I"....even if they say "I" want the child to come into a good world, "I" want to make them happy, "I" want.
In fact, it can't be any other way....becasue no one knows what a POTENTIAL child wants..

Now, if you go back to the OP, and have read some threads in here, you wouold know that the OP is an attempt to flame another poster.

I have to admit to a certain puzzlement as to what it is about the OP that draws such uniformly retarded responses.

    What a surprise.

Obviously to a certain sort of creature, the truth is very scorching indeed; but that is hardly my problem.

Ditto to you, the only truth you understand is the one you invent yourself.
