I'm 210 pounds, been there for several years, and have been running laps every other day for atleast two years. My body just doesn't work right. It really sucks.

apart from getting regular exercise, the real trick is not consuming more energy than you use.

when I was a kid, you just didn't get the volume of low nutritional high fat/sugar/carb food you get now.

servings of soda, chips, chocolates etc were tiny compared with what they are now.

we had soda on special occasions - in very small quantities. if we were thirsty, we drank water.

we had potato chips and candy/chocolate on special occasions. cookies and cakes were home made, and our consumption of them was much more limited. we were encouraged to make sure that what we had (a lot less than kids have now) was shared - and shared between more brothers and sisters.

ice cream was a special treat. and you didn't get much even then.

obesity was extremely rare back then, and those who were obese usually did have a metabolic issue.

Exercise has a limited affect on weight loss. It's all about diet. Try cutting out grains, pastas, breads as well as sugar and you'll probably notice big results.

I do exactly that. Believe me. I've tried everything. Sometimes it just doesn't work. I've actually developed a dislike for many of those things. Pasta literally makes me gag usually, and then I go get a salad.

It's impossible to NOT lose weight if you're running a calorie deficit. I suggest you maintain the running and try and add some high intensity interval weight lifting into your sessions. Running is actually a rather poor fat burner. By stimulating muscle growth you'll increase your metabolic rate and burn more fat. From there, I'd suggest writing down and recording everything you eat and getting your daily calorie intake. Through a physician, some research, and tweaking you should be able to find a level where you can shed the weight. I know it's difficult, but ANYONE can lose weight and be healthy.

If you're very committed to losing weight and can afford it, I suggest you try and find a reputable crossfit gym. This type of program is pretty much unrivaled in terms of fat burning. It is extremely intense though and you'll probably be worked harder than you ever have before, but you WILL get the results. They'll also help you out with diet.

I do judge fat people... but only so far as what the situation calls for. If I am looking for a pool shooting paertner.. I dont care. If I want to go fishing or hunting or to the beach... I care. If I am at work and need a partner I can count on when the shiat hits the fan.. I want a healthy fit individual. Being fat is a weakness. It makes you perform subpar in almost any physical action. We live in the physical world. If your fat.. you have chosen tio live with handicap.

How about boarding an airplane? I have boarded an airplane muttering, "Oh, no, hell no, I'm not sitting next to him." And you won't believe this but my muttering had nothing to do with health insurance. I didn't want to share half my seat with a fat guy.

I like how you put that. Being overweight means you've decided to be handicap. I think we could take it even further and say that ANYONE, even if they're a twig, who doesn't exercise and take care of themselves has chosen to be handicap. One thing I liked about the Marine Corps, at least in the Infantry, was that your physical fitness (and appearance) were very important determinants of competence. If you showed up with an extra 10-15 pounds you were automatically branded as a (*)(*)(*)(*)***. Of course in civilian life things should be different, but someone's physical appearance, fitness, clothing etc. tells you a lot about them.

I can remember once in my life..in my youth..when I actually appreciated a naked woman better than when she was dressed...
I asked her about her amazing figure..did she dance ?
    Swim..workout in any manner ?

Her muscle and body/skin tone was completely in tune with her age and height.
    ( and I wasn't drinking )

She replied..I do NOTHING special other than go to work and lie by the pool after work..

She said 2 brothers and sisters were built along the same lines...yet her parents were nothing out of the ordinary ..

    Genetics.

    No I didn't marry her..I married someone better ! ( for 35 years..)
and it's weird..my kids are leaner and meaner than I ever was...1 boy and 1 girl..and they do nothing special at 30 years.

So I wonder how all those skinny super models really look like naked.. actually I dont care..In a real Hunger game they wouldn't be worth the effort.
Just as in the real world they actually mean NOTHING.

Genetics can help you, but they don't do much to inhibit your figure. Everyone can be fit and have a six pack. Some people are more predisposed, but even the most big-boned person can trim down and have a great figure. The woman you saw attained her slim figure through eating. Her figure may have been firm in her 20s, but by the time she hit her 30s/40s diet alone would not keep her firm. The best figured women I've seen are the ones that aren't afraid to lift some weight. They do cardio as well as high intensity weight lifting. Rather than just be slim from not eating, they're slim AND firm from eating and exercising correctly. These women look good naked/in bathing suits because they have some muscle definition, firmness, and tightness. The skinny diet types who don't exercise tend to not look as good naked.

That explains all the fat people you see in photos of Nazi concentration camps. Genetics. What, one out of a hundred Jews in Dachau were hugely fat? Maybe one out of ten? What? I remember the ads for famine relief in Ethiopa and every once in awhile you'd see a really fat guy walking by in the background. Yep, genetics. It wasn't cause he stole everyone else's food.

Al Sharpton? Genetics. Michael Moore? Genetics. Chris Christie? Self-indulgent pig. Rosie Odonnell? genetics. Ed Schultz? Genetics. See the pattern?

I don't really judge overweight people, as any number of things can cause that from being deskbound to being housebound to other commitments and let's face it, how many jobs are physically active these days? Modern environment hardly contributes to weight loss.

I do judge people who judge others by their weight. In particular those who obsess about weight have a bolt missing and those who consider themselves superior to others because they are thin have a bag of bolts missing. I judge those people insecure and immature.

I also judge that people who think they have a right to opine about the physical appearance of others, don't have that right.

Being non-obese is popular. In the past, being obese was popular. It's all a lot of rubbish.

Working in an office environment is no excuse for being fat. Healthy eating habits WITHOUT exercise can keep you thin. 3 sessions a week for 45 minutes can make you quite fit.

Weight is a part of a person's physical appearance that can be altered. Someone with a big nose can't help it. Someone who weighs 300lbs certainly can. Weight also has health issues associated with it that go well beyond physical appearance. In the U.S. it's estimated that healthcare costs because of obesity are $75 billion per year. These are all factors that go into "judging" overweight people. Also, I'm not talking about people carrying a few extra pounds here and there, I'm talking about people carrying an extra 30+ lbs.

In the past being overweight was a sign of wealth. Up until the 20th century much of the world was in a constant struggle to get adequate nutrition. In the past nobility and the wealthy could display their power by showing that food was a non-issue for them. A Lord carrying an extra 50lbs stood in start contrast to the peasant who toiled in the fields hoping to scrap by the winter.

Really? I've always been under the impression that the only cause of obesity is overeating. You have evidence to the contrary?

Izzat so? Well I judge people who judge people who judge others by their weight.

Oh it is no excuse. It is a reason though. Many years ago, I spent some time in a national centre where the women were tied to a phone line for 8 hours per day. While they were on the line talking, they could hear the next call already waiting, so that the second they hung up from one call the next caller came straight through. The phones were set up so that they couldn't hang the phone up if someone was on the line. It was absolute misery and they were invariably short staffed, so that the mandatory breaks were always unachievable. Perhaps in the world of ignorance this doesn't happen and everything is blissful.

I see ignorance is bliss, but who are you to assume that everyone in the world has 45 minutes 3 times per week to do anything? And that they have the energy to do anything. And that they have the time to do it? You do know that some people have small children, full time jobs, elderly parents, some volunteer their services to charities, some work 12 hour shifts, night shifts, double shifts, some have terminally ill relatives, some are ill themselves but manage to hold down a job....who on earth are you to assume that because you have certain conditions in your life, that everyone has the same environment? Do you realise there are people in this very same world as you, who have so many commitments they don't know what day it is, never mind have the luxury of 45 minutes 3 times per week to spend on utterly selfish pursuits?

Clueless and judgmental both. There are any number of completely valid reasons for people to be required to be physically inactive and far fewer for them to be jumping about, even if they would like to.

And you can certainly take your nose out of other peoples business.

Yeah right and this argument has been done to death, but if you insist. How much does smoking cost in healthcare? Drinking? Shooting accidents  Careless driving incidents? Mountaineering accidents? Skiing? Fishing (your waders could fill up with water). Any human activity can cause health issues but in the free world, people are free to choose their own lifestyle without interference from finger-pointing fattists, so go figure.

Bla bla bla. And until the 60s when some twit decided thin was in, people had a different perspective and meaty people were quite valued. So what? In this day and age, if people want to be fat or thin it's up to them and none of your business. Honestly, it really annoys me...fattists are absolutely no different to me than racists, sexists, religious bigots, homophobes or any of the other interfering morons except that fattism includes smugness and condescension to a level previously reserved for colonial snobbery. Some people are fat and some are thin. Get over it.

Speaking of mindless sexists, how nice to see you again. You've been very quite of late, I do hope you are well. :bonk:

Weight is a problem in America, that's for sure. Obesity is becoming more prevalent. Though I look at it from a different perspective than a lot of knee-jerk dickwads. The questions I ask myself are: do they want to be overweight? Do they actually want the health complications and image of a very large and overweight person? I don't think the majority do. I honestly think for whatever reason, they have fallen into a self-destructive pattern and lifestyle that is very difficult to get out of. If you asked most people who are obese if they enjoy being obese, I would bet large sums of money that the honest answer you'd get from most of them would be "of course not" or something of the sort. So I don't judge them for that. I think it can be classified as an eating disorder similar to anorexia, bulimia, etc. just on the other end of the spectrum, obviously. So that being said, I do wish that people could and/or would put more focus into being healthy, but I will not and cannot judge a person for being overweight. Like someone said in one of the first pages of this thread, there are many things to judge a person for, weight is probably among the least important of these things.

It can be caused by overeating, it can be glandular, it can be caused by heavy alcohol use, but the fact of the matter is that your argument ignores a lot of underlying factors which contribute to why a person feels the need to overeat, drink a lot, etc. Depression, anxiety, trauma, low self-esteem, side effects of medications etc. People all around the world have different vices and unhealthy things they turn to in hard times. Some turn to alcohol, others to drugs, and some turn to food. It's a psychological issue, it's not just about "fatties stuffing their faces." That's a very callous and ignorant notion which a lot of physically healthy, but mentally stupid people who have had happy-go-lucky lives for the most part--and turn to different things than food for whatever negative moments they've experienced--seem to share.

Sparkpeople.com -- A free website dedicated to helping people get healthy. It is a community. People support each other. It has a menu guide, nutrition tracker, exercise tracker, tons of excellent articles. I like to plan my week's menu then print my grocery list. It has recipes or you can make your own and get the nutrition facts for it. You can save your own cookbook, as many as you want. If you have a restricted diet, you can customize your nutrition tracker to keep track of sodium, potassium, fiber, cholesterol or a number of other things. I lost 32 pounds though I eat a lot of food.

Those people in concentration camps were fat because they didn`t get enough exercise. However, some of them were just plain gluttons too some of them ate a huge meal every three months, half a carrot, or three baked beans!.

Ahh, its so amusing to see the "thought" processes of something that somehow thinks it is important enough that the people in front of it, or people ANYWHERE, should CARE what it is thinking, or what it does or doesn't like!

I think there is a huge difference between being fit or unfit to be able to do certain things better than someone else and attracting the opposite sex for perpetuating the species.

Those waddling down a hallway might be mental giants in their field..and those fit people might be unable to reason a simple latch on a chicken shed.

The attraction between the sexes is only part of the reason we make our choices..the ability to be seen as a primary care giver and steady EDDIE far out weigh JOE 6 pack in women's survey's.

Often Joe 6 packs are seen as only focused on themselves..or the MUST LOVE DOGS test is failed.
Fat people are seen as un disciplined..un happy when often the opposite is true.
Some people just enjoy FOOD more than others...

    FOOD for thought.. :chew: :)

It's so amusing watching liberals try to justify everything by attacking the critic on something unrelated to the issue.

It wasn't really an "argument", but yes, the question did not on its face acknowledge that overeating is a symptom as well as a cause.

Speaking of underlying causes, has it occurred to you that such symptoms might have an underlying cause other than infelicitous biochemical interactions? Or is the idea of personal responsibility just too heretical to be entertained?
