The Republicans believed then as they do now. People should be judged by their character and not the color of their skin. It was the Democrats who did not believe that and then when they lost the civil rights battles discovered they could capitalize on that by buying off the black vote.

Give me a (*)(*)(*)(*)ing break. Conservatives at the time were calling MLK a communist. His right hand man was an openly gay former member of the Communist party for christsakes! The conservatives complete disregard for history astounds me sometimes. Only in wingnut looney land is MLK a conservative and the Nazis liberal.

I have to agree with the Serfer here. Dr. King was a Socialist to some degree, he wouldn't be a member of the current incarnation of the GOP if he was alive today...

I'm surprised at all the Republicans coming in to express their support for MLK.

    Good on y'all.

If he was a Republican, then he was much further to the left in economic policies than his fellow party members.

In fact, he was further left economically than most Democrats back then.

You could make the argument that JFK would be Republican today, but LBJ was much further to the left than today's Republicans and even much of today's Democrats.

Today's Democratic party is much more economically conservative than it was back in JFK's time. Even though the Cold War was in full effect back then, Democrats were much more socialist in orientation then than they are now.

    Yep, pretty much.

    Not economically.

I would bother with rebutting each of your revisionist claims, but I know by now that your koolaid is too strong to counter.

Believe what you want to, but it doesn't change the facts.

Why it was the Democrats who opposed him and have since tried to capitalize on him.

And why do you think that was? Was it really about race? Let's look at it logically for a second. If the Republican party was the party with all the history of supporting civil rights and the Democrat party was the party with the history of all the segregation, why would racist Dixiecrats jump ship to the party with the greater history of supporting blacks just because the Democrat party decided to start supporting blacks too? That doesn't even make any sense. That's like losing an eye and then intentionally poking out the other one just because you'd rather have none at all if you can't have both.

What else was going on around that time in the shifting political climate? The Democrat party was drifting further and further away from the church, religion, and traditional family structure. The Republican party still valued these things, as they do today. Could it be that maybe, just maybe, these Dixiecrats cared more about their church and their families than they did about hating black people and that's why they became Republicans?

Just something to consider for those who always feel the need to assume the worst possible motive for a conservative viewpoint.

I was VP of the Teenage Republicans in a major Alabama city in the late 60's. Even then it was the Republicans who supported and pushed for desegregation while the Democrats still put up the road blocks. Before you take it upon yourself to feel congradulatory towards one group or the other, better make sure you know of what you speak.

How come there are still people pretending that conservative policy was NOT the driving force behind segregation?

Setting aside your attempt to paint him as a racist, he certainly knows more about the subject than you.
LBJ made Nixon look like MLK and let's not forget Kennedy opposed the 1957 Civil Rights act and voted against it and did nothing at all to help get the 1961 bill passed.

The Democrats in concert with the MSM have propagandized the issue for decades trying to cover their arses. Many people in this country actually believe it was the Republicans who oppressed black and held back Civil Rights when in fact they fought FOR blacks and Civil Rights for over a century. It a shame our young people do not know the true history and the denial of them learning it has been solely do to political expedience by the Democrats.

How come there are those who pretend otherwise.

By executive order then Gov. Goldwater desegregated the AZ National Guard. The first state governor to do so. BEFORE Trumann did so for the US Military.
