Verbal flack aside Obama has cautiously managed the Iranian situation and avoided another war.

Now Trump said that if the Iranians so much as flipped our sailors the bird, he would consider it an act of war.. but I think that's the sundowner talking.

I don't consider Iran backward by any means and nor does anyone who has ever visited Iran or knows anything about it beyond the propaganda prevalent in the West.

The US is certainly capable of inflicting severe damage to Iran and none of what I have said should be taken to imply otherwise. But your comparison regarding the Iraq war is totally misplaced and foolish. I won't bother to explain it to you since your comments don't show you to be a person who would benefit from the time required for me to explain the differences. I will only say this instead: Iran and the US have been engaged in low level conflicts in various theaters for a long time, long before Obama became president. The idea that Obama has somehow acted differently viz a viz Iran compared to his predecessors is rather baseless.

Iranian women are some of the most oppressed women in the world. Their constitution is cited in this article as well in case you were unfamiliar. Glad I helped clear up your confusion.

Thanks for clearing the situation of Iranian women for me! In the meantime, I invite you to continue your research on the subject. While I would certainly change many aspects of Iran's laws relating to the issue, the plight of women in Iran is not at all what you imagine either. Women are a major part of the work force, constitute the majority of university students, and despite certain discriminatory laws and rather arcane restrictions, are in fact often the most influential members within the family unit here. To be sure, and I am repeating myself: I would change many aspects of Iran's laws, even if many of the laws here aren't put in practice in quite the way you might imagine and even if there are many other devises and legal provisions to circumvent those laws that are indeed rather backward and senseless.

That makes no sense. Many thousands of people are getting killed in the Middle East More than when Bush was President) a crisis is coming to a head in Europe with Islamic refugees,, Iran is practicing war games and you claim a war 'has been avoided'? A war is going on as this is being debated but only one side is fighting. Sitting on the sidelines after abandoning the Iraqi people, and innocents are still being murdered, is not avoiding war.

If the democracies respond as they should then there may be a chance for democracy to regain a foothold in the ME. If not then the religious fanatics will continue to gain strength, will become more firmly established, and it will make the job to regain human rights and freedoms that much more later.

Then it seems clear enough that the Iranians should be flipping any birds but instead go back to their mosques, live lives of some sort of normalcy, and pray several times each day.. They don't yet seem to realize that negative actions have negative consequences.

The leadership in Iran has not got the interest of the Iranian people at heart. These people tried a revolution a few years ago against their religious leaders but that died without any support. Understand the difference between people and their leaders and, as far as any country is concerned, a great deal depends on the freedom of the people under their leaders. http://www.investors.com/politics/editorials/obama-ignored-iran-freedom-fighters-in-2009/

Iranian human rights are some of the worst in the entire world, in general. They have however cut back on barbaric acts such as stoning (throwing rocks at someone until their death. By Iranian and Sharia law, those rocks had to be small enough so it did not kill them quickly). I think in 2002 (it took them that long) it was not legal anymore so it was nice to see that.

However so many more of their barbaric laws are still in play so the world will continue to feel the sorrow and sympathy for those who live in their borders.

Many of us are aware of Iran's policies, indeed the policies inherent in Islam, and the situation has become steadily worse since the Ayatollahs took over. If Iran is not backward how else would you explain any of this? https://www.google.ca/search?q=iran...UH7IMKHS9gDmgQ_AUICSgC&biw=1600&bih=791&dpr=1

There was a moratorium in 2002 but that was lifted in 2007 and usually ignored anyway. There are not too many positives you can take away from any Muslim dominated country. http://www.foxnews.com/world/2015/1...-as-rest-world-marks-un-human-rights-day.html

So it's immoral to stone people but it's completely justified to bomb countries, cities, towns, and their innocent people from afar. From an airplane or drone. So long as you can't see the damage, it's not as bad. Oh and also, stoning is archaic, personal and graphic! Sounds WAY WORSE that way.
    Nice propaganda there guy.

It's unbelievable. I'm an American. Like to think f myself of American. I'd LIKE to support this country. But to do so I have to swallow BS like that? And turn around and ignore all of the innocent lives we're responsible for ending?

Sorry, that's not gonna happen. I have a conscience. F*** patriotism. I want to be proud of this country because of its actions. Not blindly like a lemming running off the cliff.

It's a response in specific to your regurgitated propaganda. "zomg stoning bad!!"

Tfw u want me to judge other people. We should more so criticize ourselves to make ourselves better.

Patriotism is a disease. Nothing to be proud of. Be proud of actions, not status.

Sorry (not really) I singled you out. I can't stand arguments like that. Fact is we're in their back yard, and we throw w fit when they posture with us? But it's ok to be tough with them, they're sub-humans that stone people, right?

BS. I try to be an objective dood. From Ohio. l'd like to like the US, but I'm sick of hearing all of these reports about posturing with other countries on the other side of the world. Enough. Being the troops home. Israel will be fine, trust me.

This does not make us isolationists, this does not make us cowards. This does not mean we're running. It just means we're allowing other countries to mind their own ****. I'd like us to trade with all countries equally. Be open, not isolationists. We should not judge other countries. And some societies do well with dictators (not all are bad - see Ghaddafi). We are in no position to judge, not with how many bombs we've dropped. That's not freedom, that's tyranny. We are that tyranny.

The discussion here, about "stoning" and such, has turned into the typical nonsense. I have dealt with these kind of arguments elsewhere in other threads in the past, but its a waste of time anyway. Suffice it to say, I used to live and practice law California and now live in Iran. While Iran has its faults, the real picture here is not at all what some like to pretend or propagate. For those who want to a visit a thread where I have dealt with these arguments before and tried to present the picture of Iran as it really is as opposed to what some prefer it was, you can go to this thread and look over several pages of arguments on the subject and the usual back and forth that is part of the script in discussions about Iran.

In the meantime, the Iran I know looks more like these pictures than the picture some like to paint.

You never have to apologize for stupid comments.

You have yet to tell us how the Human Rights of American citizens are so poor, compared to Iran (which was the discussion).

You just went on some rant.

We do not exercise human rights violations with our citizenry. Nor does our authorities (debatable with recent cop issues), but what we DO do, through ignorance, willful or not, is allow our military history since ww2 to violate the rights of millions of people around the world. THAT is my problem. This doesn't make me stupid. Just observant. You're the lemming for believing the current narrative.

Feel free to create your own thread about what you just mentioned. It's not relevant to this country's human rights. You're speaking of foreign policy.

Glad I could help clear up your confusion.

BTW I do not think you are stupid. I think you're just on the wrong thread.

There were many with easily influenced beliefs who became victims of the pro-Soviet anti-American propaganda during the Cold War. As propagandists and scientists have pointed out, at least as early as WW!, you can get some people to believe in anything.

Ironic! To be so fundamentally lied to when it comes to a country such as Iran - one that is constantly in the news -- requires a lot of effort and much propaganda. The kind that just doesn't fit the picture of the US being such a beacon of freedom and justice!

In one of my posts sometime ago in another thread, I asked people who believed the propaganda about Iran to consider the following and think a bit whether any of it fits the image they would have of Iran?

How about female travelers. Here are some random reports I posted after simply searching under "Female solo traveler Iran" using Google back then. I posted the first 5 reports in the order that appeared on Google under my search, lurking into the articles for a relevant passage to quote.

    Again.....keep deluding yourself.

You point out these tiny and insignificant military achievements by Iran and that's all good and fine but as I said the U.S. is simply containing Iran.

If Iran keeps to the agreement there will be no problems.

But if Iran does anything stupid such as my examples #1-#4....the United States will have no choice but to invade Iran and dismantle it's nuclear facilities.

This is not a boast or and opinion but simply a fact.

And there will be absolutely nothing Iran could do to stop us.

As I mentioned earlier, I note your admonition but leaving aside whether it is meritorious or not, it is clearly misdirected in any case. None of us here are the figures who make the relevant policies, and I certainly don't pretend to, and the best we can do in these discussions is to have something informative and useful to say to enhance the understanding of readers who read our posts regarding various issues and policies being debated.

Feel free to think I'm a moron. It's no difference to me.

You may not think they're related. But we use other country's human rights issues as justification for our foreign policy decisions. Those decisions themselves are quite CONTRARY to what we accuse other countries of. Yes, it's not an apples and apples comparison. But it's something I gripe about.

You talk about the atrocities of other regimes. That does not make our presence there OK.

Don't worry. I'm not here for reputation or internet friends.
