Why shouldn't one advocate legal tax avoidance? I believe it is clearly pure social welfare to advocate people only pay the taxes they legal owe and to show them how to legally owe as little as possible. It surely is not a political act.

You do know that these groups even after receiving a 501 status can engage in political advocacy. It is not entirely prohibited, you only have to devote 51% of you time and money on non-political advocacy or education for social welfare.

Which does not prohibit you from receiving it. You don't have to comply with the regulations BEFORE you receive the status, you have to AFTER you receive. They were not claim tax free nor telling donors they could deduct donations and didn't have to, that does not prohibit you from BECOMING a 501 which is what they were seeking.
