If I refuse to sell ad space on my billboard to the KKK, louis Farrakhan, or any other racists organization, have I silenced them? I think its well within their right to refuse to carry their message.

"Free speech" is a political concept and only a political concept. Its only contextually appropriate within a political structure. It's part of the Bill of Rights. It's a political principle that absolutely limits the government's power to non-existence with respect to "free speech", and explicitly recognizes the right of every individual to speak their minds freely and without fear of government interference or punishment.

It would have been better if in my original post I had used "free speech" instead of just speech. Facebook has every right to control speech within their properties. They have no right outside of that, except what other free individuals grant them. The government is explicitly prohibited from restricting that right in any manner or form.

Go for it.

 

Conservatism is an ideology that is outdated and fear based. It should have a platform. But not when that platform is a private company.

They do, but only to a point. They do not want to be a platform for hatred, that is a term and condition of creating an account on that platform. You cannot force Facebook to be a platform from hate, whether that be ISIS or Richard Spencer, there is no obligation except the ones they have to their shareholders which your policy would contradict. It is bad for business to be a platform for hate, and as they are not the government, they as a private entity can establish specific well defined limits. Content that is hateful or meant to invite hatred can at the discretion of the moderation team have actions against their posts and or access to the platform. It is a giant forum, a public meeting with others, but on the internet there is near universal moderation on any platform worth talking on. The places on the internet with next to zero moderation, like Gab are cesspools of hatred, the entire population doesn't need to be gaslit by every ******* out there just because we want to honor the first amendment. I think this absolutist approach to free speech in all contexts is just unrealistic.

 

What do you mean by "New Public Square"? Are you trying to invoke this in some legal sense, that due to such a status Facebook has to honor?

 

Why were they even still on Facebook? Guaranteed 99% of their content was already shadowbanned anyway. At least they won't be wasting any of their energy on it now.
