Why would anyone care what someone else does with their money unless they are insecure in their own behaviors?

Actually, the protein and other nutrients in the milk make Cheerios and milk a pretty decent breakfast, as it keeps blood sugar stable better than a higher-calorie meal that is all carbs (especially sugar). People don't need a lot of calories for breakfast. They need high-protein, low-sugar foods that will keep them going until lunch.

I want people to eat, hence why I give an inordinate amount to charity. I just believe that a one-size-fits-all federal program can't work and has been proven not to reduce poverty but to grow the terms of it. Communities are better able to care for their own because they know individuals who are poor, know why they are poor, and can help lift them from the spirit of despair that hangs over poor neighborhoods like an evil spectre.

I also believe in voluntaryism and that to force others to think or believe like me is just wrong and immoral.

Let's take the contrary view. Why sacrifice ANYTHING? You have a country of freeloaders in the USA. If you work and ACTUALLY PAY TAXES, you should not give a dime to charity or a bum on the street. The GUBMENT is taking care of it for you. Until the GUBMENT cuts spending, I will never again contribute to charity or sacrifice a single thing in my life.

Meat regularly goes on sale for less than $2/lb. Before Thanksgiving, turkeys were on for $1/lb. Chicken is routinely on for less than $2/lb. You just need to expand your idea of "meat" past beef, ham and bacon.

Because it's our money, not theirs, and it is to keep them from destitution, not to finance their unhealthy addictions.

    Correct.

You can also get great deals on hamburger etc. if you find it before it is going to turn (as per sale by date, not actually buying rotten meat of course), and then cook it. No problem finding it lower than 2 dollars.

Someone on food stamps does not have the means to go bargain hunting at several super markets for a deal on almost expired meat.

Its ridiculous to subject the poor to these conditions, unless they are viewed as somewhat inferior to those who are privileged.

Yes, all of the poor people in this country are starving which is why we have an obesity epidemic primarily among POOR PEOPLE. Oh wait. That doesn't seem to make sense for some reason. Hmm. I wonder why?

    http://ivn.us/2010/06/02/low-income-californians-especially-vulnerable-obesity-epidemic/

Having lived amongst the dredge of society for my childhood and having seen firsthand what they had in their homes and later on as a cashier what they bought at the store they buy crap food almost exclusively. Does anyone honestly think that these people have the intelligence, discipline and motivation to actually cook healthy meals. Hell no! They buy processed cookies and crackers and donuts, steaks, etc. when they should be buying fresh produce (that alone would save them tons of money as potatoes are cheap) ground chuck, chicken and pork instead of beef and so on.

When I got my second apartment I was living between $30-$40 a week groceries and it is manageable. You buy potatoes, eggs, milk, vitamins (I hate vegetables), cheap meats like chicken and pork, rices and pastas are also fairly cheap. It can be done although you will actually have to cook stuff *gasp*

People need to stop feeling sorry for the majority of these people. With a few exceptions they are lousy human beings and that money could be more well spent on people that really need it and deserve it like in institutions or care centers or clinics etc. Not these lazy good for nothing bums. This isn't new either. When I was growing up in the 80s and 90s unemployment was always under 6% which is basically full employment and they still just sat on their asses all day long. They are pathetic excuses for people and there are alot of other people with actual physical and mental handicaps that could use that money.

    He's not with me.

The few white poor families bought the same (*)(*)(*)(*)... maybe a little less purple.

Asians ate Asian. Indians ate Indian. Mexicans ate Mexican.

Weren't any Asians where I was that I recall but the Mexicans, blacks and whites all bought way to much of that crappy food instead of the healthy stuff. The Mexican families that actually had good home cooked meals were actually not the ones taking all the welfare assistance. They were the ones where the dad was working a couple of jobs and the wife was always watching the kids and other peoples kids for some extra cash. Once you get into the dregs of society it didn't matter what color your skin was, they were to (*)(*)(*)(*)ing lazy to make a decent meal for their kids for the most part. Cooking to them was boiling a couple of hotdogs and some mac n cheese.

I guess I've been living on an island too long. Even chicken costs $3 a pound here, when it's on sale.

Just because the people in the past had to live on cheap foods shouldn't be a reason to take food stamps away from the people of today.

That is envious and class warfare.

One of my friends took a 30k paycut when she moved back here from Massachusetts or Maine, I forget which one, she said that even though she was making 30% more there as some hoyty toyty regional manager the housing and cost of living were astronomically higher than here even in the rather wealther neighborhood of Brookfield. The ended up getting a house that was twice as big and a bunch of land to boot for the same price she was paying there. And yes your groceries are way to expensive out there.

I grew up with a family of 8 before they had welfare or food stamps and only my Father worked. But if it were now, that would be over $1,050.00 a month. We could eat like kings today on that. But we learned how to eat cheap. We had chicken, liver & hamburger pretty much for our meat. Mom usually made meat loaf with the hamburger. We ate cornbread and beans at least twice a week. We never had lunch meat. It was peanut butter and jelly, or peanut butter and banana sandwiches. Breakfast was cereal or cream of wheat. Sundays morning was our big meal. Biscuits and gravy, home fries, eggs, toast and fried apples. We usually had some type of potato at each meal

I love the post but as an Independent I see the middle. I use to sell food to drug dealers who used multiple EBT cards to buy some of the most espensive food you can buy. I don't want to get into personal detail about me or I would tell you more.

Drug dealers are collecting EBT cards for drugs. It's 100% fact, I've seen it with my eyes. But vendors can't turn them down. There is a long list of scenario's but you simply can't go down that road.

Feeding the people in need is a must and food stamps are a must. From the middle I realize we need to figure out a way to end the corruption. And it wouldn't be hard to do so. A 1 second thought told me, "maybe EBT should only be used for WIC approved items." It took me 1 second to get smarter than government.

Drug dealers need to eat too, most drug dealers are not rich only the Mexicans who export the drugs from Juarez make billions.

So since they are oppressed and poor, they qualify for EBT

Yep. Here's another one: require a specimen signature that matches the signature on the EBT application form, like traveller's checks do. Problem solved.

$1.40/meal/person so $4.20 a day per person to eat? Doable.

Food is cheap. The local grocery store has pork chops and ground beef for $2/lb, vegetables $0.60/can, potatoes $0.50/lb, oranges $0.75/lb, an egg costs ~$0.17. You can make 22 pancakes for a buck and a quarter. Flour and rice are dirt cheap. A serving of milk costs less than $0.20. 100ct corn tortillas go for $3.50.

It's easier to make it go around with more people in the family than it is with one.

    On the money. Thanks.

So... NOBODY has the balls to address luxuries "afforded" an arbitrary number of people who cannot "afford" food?

I get that you are not down with drug testing. That isn't where this is going. The question is... are you COOL with everyones taxes paying for X number of peoples food, because they are spending that money on luxury items? Does that seem cool to you?

Is it "fair"? Does it serve "the greater good"?

The above statistics represent roughly $2,550/person per year or $212/mo/person. It also represents dining out and as we can assume from the statistics the amount of money spent eating out probably went down in 2009 because of the recession because food prices were going up while overall spending went down.

Yes, a person can eat on a food stamp budget by taking a lot of time collecting coupons although I've seen TV shows on "super-coupon savers" and they invest a huge amount of money in stockpiling food when they can purchase mulitples of the same item at discounted coupon prices. They buy in bulk that the average food stamp person can't afford to do. Their long term cost is lower based upon log term investments in food that a person living from week to week cannot afford to do.

A person can also save money by preparing more food from scratch but if we look at a single divorced woman raising a child and working eight hours a day she doesn't have much time to prepare many foods like bread that takes hours to make from scratch. We can also look at old retirees that have the time but where simply working in the kitchen is a challenge and sometimes even dangerous.

But yes, they can get by with a meager food diet and careful shopping but if these individuals were to have their food stamps cut off then they might not have anything to eat. Is that what Republicans really want to do? Do they really propose balancing the US budget by eliminating food from the tables of low income Americans so that multi-millionaires pack their pocketbooks with far more money than they could ever hope to reasonably spend on living expenses?
