Climate change ‘unequivocal’ and ‘unprecedented,’ says new U.N. report

The hundreds of climate experts who compiled the mammoth new climate report released today by the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) had to work under unprecedented pandemic conditions. At vast meetings forced online, scientists wrestled with how to convey the extent of the global crisis and the urgent need to act. It was uncanny to see “the echoes of one crisis in another,” says Claudia Tebaldi, a climate scientist at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and one of the authors of the report.

The report paints an alarming picture but emphasizes there is still time for swift action to mitigate the worst of the projected impacts of climate change. Current average warming is now estimated at 1.1°C compared to preindustrial records, a revision based on improved methods and data that adds 0.1°C to previous estimates. Under every emissions scenario explored by the report, average warming of 1.5°C—a major target of the Paris climate accord—will very likely be reached within the next 20 years.

What would you expect from climate change deniers, an endorsement?

Get used to it. Democrats will spend your kids' children's children's money to allow them to host their own birthday parties without masks.

First error. Hundreds of climate experts did not compile the report. Second Error, hundreds of studies compiled are mostly not from 'climate experts'.

This is misinformation at it's finest. The IPCC still uses RCP8.5 for over 40% of it's scenarios even after saying RCP8.5 is no longer valid. The 1.1C estimate is in the middle of a range of estimates and they lowered the top range so in effect, it too is a guess.

If you take a private plane anywhere you have no regard for global warming. SORRY!!! That’s like tossing a plastic bottle into the street and saying, hey it’s just 1 bottle…who cares because I’m wearing a Save the Earth pin.

It's the biggest political story in the world, a grinding global crisis in public view, bringing deadlier, more violent storms, larger, more wildfires, a promise of rising oceans that threaten to make coastal cities uninhabitable, dangerous heat waves, food and water shortages, and tropical diseases spreading beyond their traditional boundaries – crying out for action from leaders around the world.

Great work. You've uncovered the secret agenda of those treehuggers. Not only are they trying to ruin the economy they want to wipe out the human race! Better call your congressman.

While it's true forest mismanagement has contributed to the severity of the fires you understand saying "treehuggers" is why CA is burning right now is bullshit, right?

This claim, from your link, is quite simply a lie.
"Humans have warmed the planet by an average of 1.2 degrees Celsius since industrialization began in the 19th century. This small-sounding change has helped fuel severe wildfires, record-breaking heatwaves, floods, and an ever-growing list of other disasters."

Extreme Weather Is the New Normal. We Know Why.

How can science tease out the exact contribution of human-caused climate change to a given event without a separate, otherwise identical, but human-free earth to compare it to? The first step is to characterize the event using observations: how long and hot was the heat wave, or how much rain fell during the storm, or how strong was the hurricane.

Then, we turn to our climate models. These are sophisticated physics-based simulations of the atmosphere, ocean and land surface that are run on powerful supercomputers. Because we know very well the amount of greenhouse gases humans have added to the atmosphere, we can remove the human influence from climate models’ atmospheres to create a world without climate change. Using the models, we can then identify how strong, how long, how big, and how likely the same event would be in that imaginary world.

The effect of climate change is the difference between what happens in a world without human influence and what happened in the real world. When scientists find that, say, what is now a one in a 100 years event in the real world would have occurred only once every 200 years without climate change, this doubled risk can be attributed to climate change.

Climate models are not designed and make no attempt whatsoever to predict singular events. Predicting stronger (or weaker) weather events is pure guess whether by climate scientists or by laypersons; attributing any to climate change (aka global warming) is 100% conjecture, again whether by scientists or laypeople. Secondly those supercomputers do nothing that some person didn't tell it exactly what to do using the data exactly as put in it by some person. Supercomputers do it really fast but the output might be correct, partially correct, or incorrect depending entirely on the people running and inputting the supercomputer. The computer can not and will not predict changing climate or any effects from climate change unless the operators fed it and the programmers program was set up to do just that. You know, truth in truth out, and garbage in garbage out. This coupled with a lot of program algorithms that are best estimates or conjectures by climate scientists is what makes climate model outputs somewhat suspect.

The Times article continues........Dr. Otto was part of an international team of researchers organized by the World Weather Attribution initiative who conducted a rapid analysis of the event. They found that human-induced global warming made the heat wave 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit hotter and at least 150 times more likely to occur. The report garnered headlines in part because it was released just nine days after the heat wave occurred, so it was still news.

Western North American extreme heat virtually impossible without human-caused climate change
