Why should that make a difference?

We were in debt during the Apollo program as well.

There's no way. Even planning a moon station would take longer than that. He couldn't set up the funds for it either.

Newt is not only a flip flopper but an idiot too apparently.

I'm 100% pro space exploration but this just won't happen. It's got no basis in reality.

Planning for a permanent base on the moon has been done for decades.

    It isn't rocket science.

And it is more than affordable even with current budget problems.

A manned Mission to Mars is affordable as well.

It ceases to be affordable now that the space industry has been effectively privatized as a whole.

When NASA was just a matter of being a small chunk of the budget, it was one thing. Now, we're moving in a direction where the market has to handle this on its own.

We saw what privatizing war has done -- the occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan were some of the most expensive endeavors ever due to cost plus contracts and limited competition.

The space race is likely to follow a similar arrangement with government funding now. We should let companies do this with their own money -- not ours.

Private enterprise does not fund exploration.

A couple of points..I am all for it if Newt Gingrich is the 1st person to live on the moon..there he can be KING if he wants.

2nd. If it creates jobs and is done without crony votes in government fine.
I would like to see some one design a earth bound vehicle that doesn't use friction so it would be able to glide over terrain without the use of roads and bridges. If we can design one for MARS why not earth ?

Who gets to determine what minerals and what areas are to belong to who ?
Being 1st isnt always the best answer..ASK the native Americans.
So King Newt would mine more gold for himself ?
Using American taxpayers to get there ?
How would China think on that..After all China now is a problem says Obama..Gee who said THAT 1st..?
    Huntsman ?
    No the other Mormon..ROMNEY.

Using this crapola is a DIVERSION..and Newt is all about DIVERSION not problem solving.
    SEE OBAMA..
    Washington as USUAL.

It can, although you're correct that the state is more suited for that kind of investment.

We should have thought of that before we mostly gutted NASA's funding.

If Newt wants to turn NASA back into the public/government organization it used to be -- including a resurgence in funding -- then this idea is feasible.

However, given our current arrangement, it would be a massive money pit for private contractors to exploit. The same is true for occupations of foreign countries.

If it's worth doing big name investors will line up and the free market will do it itself like it has in the past.

great idea, moon is so little picture. We need someone who sees the big picture like Mars or Enceladus.

No profits will ever be made off the moon colonies/bases. You do it for the sake of gaining scientific knowledge with a further exploration in mind, or for prestige. This can only be a money pit, so you would need government backing. Setting up moon bases would be cheaper though than landing a man on Mars without any follow-up plan to set up a Martian base, and if you wish to set up bases either on Mars or the moon using technologies not yet tested in the field, you would rather do it on the closer neighbour so if something goes wrong, then you actually have the time and the means to respond with a rescue plan.

Actually, nothing would be gained by a return to the moon that would help send a manned mission to Mars.

Dr. Robert Zubrin in "The Case for Mars" thoroughly debunked that idea.

And "space rescues" only happen in science fiction.

You implied you were afraid to stop in black neighborhoods and make pictures.

How is that not a racist statement on your part?

What? Do you think that black Americans are like some exotic tribe of headhunters in New Guinea's Owen Stanley Mountains that routinely kill strangers?

Don't they have black people in England?!!?!?!?

In my opinion, helping the former Soviet Union re-integrate and engage them in an industrial automation race may be more productive as a prelude to such an ambitious endeavor and would still demand labor; and for the spin off technologies that may be developed in the process. We could even practice on any ocean floor.

Helping a foreign nation do anything is not going to spark the interest and imaginations of Americans or inspire young people to educate themselves in engineering and sciences.

Newt's not going anywhere, and you "Bush Republicans" are the ones that screwed everything up to start with, so take your phony Mitt and go back to Progressive la la land.
