Is this statistic on all deaths by firearms, or criminal deaths by firearms? Only gun homicides are relevant. Of course suicide by gun will be higher in states with higher rates of gun ownership. If you decided to commit suicide would you to eat your shotgun or jump off a bridge?

I have to agree. Not that more CCW permits wouldn't make New York safer, but that New York should be able to have its own policy on this issue, much like how Alaska should be given the right to allow constitutional carry.

The powers not expressly delegated to the Federal government (incl. those explicitly denied it) are reserved to the states, and if the states do not opt to legislate, the people. The second amendment is a restriction on the Federal government, not the states, and while I am overjoyed about McDonald v. Chicago in the sense that it has consequences which clearly benefit me, I do not agree with its constitutional argument.

The rational, constitutional solution to the gun question is as follows:

The Federal government should have no control whatsoever over any sort of gun policy. No background checks, no NFA, no grandfathering of fully automatic weapons, nothing.

The states should as per the 10th amendment be permitted to craft whatever gun policy they see fit. New York should be able to implement European style blanket bans on firearms, incl. those in common military infantry use. Vermont should be able to permit fully automatic purchases at Walmart without ID. Federal background checks and the acceptability of other states' permits should be done by agreements between states on a bilateral level.

1) for a right to be limited, the relevant government must have the proper power to limit it. THE second amendment was not about what we could to but rather it was a blanket prohibition on the federal government doing anything

2) Scalia realized that if he admitted that the federal government did not have any proper power in this area, many other governmental institutions lots of Americans have become dependent on (that were based on the DISHONEST FDR expansion of the Commerce clause in derogation of the TENTH AMENDMENT) would have to be struck down as well

such as

Title VII
Social Security
Medicaid and Medicare

is your real issue with law abiding people being able to carry or own handguns? I have been involved in this debate for decades at many levels, including professionally, and I see patterns.

Most of the civilized world gets by just fine without having to carry guns with them every time they leave the house.
Here's an idea - if you are too nervous to travel without a weapon, then just stay home.

I have a better idea-if you are afraid to carry a firearm, then don't. See I believe in free choice. Don't tell others what they ought to do. be content that you are doing what you want and hopefully you will never be attacked. I was once attacked in an area that "never had muggings". The muggers thought they were in an area where no one carries. They picked the one graduate student in the area who had a carry permit. Things didn't work out well for them.

And I believe in the right to not have to be subjected to unregulated gunwavers threatening my safety.
For every story of someone being saved by their gun there are 10 or 20 stories of friends and family being shot by accident, or in a drunken rage or whatever. Guns turn arguments into murders.
Most of the civilized world gets by fine without having to be strapped to go to the supermarket. Only in America have we been convinced by the gun culture that the big bad meanies are going to get us if we aren't armed to the hilt.

you clearly do not understand what a right is. And someone else's freedom alone does not threaten your freedom nor give ou any validity to say their freedom should be restricted because they MIGHT use that freedom to harm you in an ILLEGAL FASHION

Most of the civilized world has nanny state governments and no constitution that means anything. Feel free to move to one of them but among the lamest arguments you can EVER make to someone who believes in American Primacy is to tell us what OTHER countries do. That's like telling a Yale man that Harvard does something someway or trying to convince an Ohio state administrator to adopt some michigan programs.

America is alone in creating a gun culture that has frightened people into believing that they need guns to protect themselves in everyday life.
We've become a nation of cowards.

actually studies have demonstrated that the real cowards tend to be ones who want to ban guns. you see, they want to outsource their own safety to the government and they refuse to accept the RISK and RESPONSIBILITY of making their own safety an INDIVIDUAL DUTY. men and women owning guns REMIND these cowards of the fact that many other citizens are willing to ACCEPT that risk and us gun owners ACCENTUATE feelings of inadequacy among cowards. SO the cowards wish to ban guns hoping they won't be reminded of their failings as citizens. Read A NATION OF COWARDS by Jeffrey Snyder-widely available on the NET-first published in the PUBLIC INTEREST about 20 years ago IIRC

This is such a joke. The hypocricy of the right is amazing.

On one hand, state have the right to dictate their own laws

On the other hand, any law that limits a gun owner in any way shape or form is evil.

This bill would basically tell states that they are not allowed to enforce their own gun laws.

For example, in a couple, one has to pass a test on gun safety and prove oneself capable of using a gun (you have to be able to shoot) in order to get a carry conceal permit). If the new Congress get their way, these states will be stripped of their authority to enforce this requirement and they will have to let anyone who wants to bring a concealed weapon into their state do so.

This will endanger police, since they do not have access to out of state records on permits, and so they won't know who has a weapon and who doesn't during traffic stops.

This is the reason there has always been a public policy exemption on gun permits. States gun policy often varies, and so, it's left up to each state. This bill would take away states' right to enforce their own gun policies, and require them to allow carry conceal, even if it's illegal under their law.

Here's a better idea. I carry a gun. It's not hurting anyone and could save the life of myself or my family. Are you saying that no one else in the civilized world becomes victims of violent crime? Sorry, but you live in a fantasy world. The difference is that in the rest of the "civilized world", the victims have no means to defend themselves. How is that a good thing? You make no sense.

a 3 year old child is not a fetus. the 2 are not comparable. aborting a fetus is not murder.

There is no state in the Union that does not issue concealed carry permits. Hence, it's ridiculous that CCW permits don't fall under the Full Faith and Credit clause of the Constitution, just like marriage and driver's licenses.

I will say that not everyone with a concealed carry permit is a saint. However, all but a very few percent with a carry permit are going to be far more likely to be proactive and keep themselves and others safe from violent predators.

Bringing up the terrorist Esteban Santiago---he had a CC permit---however, given his history of mental illness, domestic abuse and going to the FBI with dreams of IS should have been enough to have him thrown into the mental hospital. This would have saved 5 lives.

The same thing with the radical Islamic terrorist Omar Mateen. He was even a security guard and had been investigated 3 times by the FBI. Such people should have had a search warrant issued and been fully investigated. That could have saved 49 lives---but Muslims matter more than gays, so that was that.

I don't think there should be anything less than nationwide Constitutional carry. Any honest adult citizen should have the right to be armed anywhere in the US outside of businesses and institutions that don't want the 2nd Amendment practiced there.

If you and yours really gave a hoot about day to day violent crime and murders in the US, you'd have been aggressively going after urban street and prison gangs, instead of inanimate objects like guns.

Violent crime in the US, 1993-2015 says otherwise.

We;'re discussing people with CCW permits carrying concealed weapons -- how is your statement, above, relevant?

Feel free to cite evidence to this effect.

Your hyperbole only indicates a lack of meaningful argument on your part.

Oh. Well, if violent crime in the US isn't all that bad, I guess there's no need for more gun control laws.

Seems to me the pro-gun crowd is simply applying the argument laid out in the resolution of the same-sex marriage issue.
Do you disagree with state having to recognize same-sex marriages from other states, when the laws of that state do not allow such a thing?

I fail to see how if we had almost no guns available there would be more gun crime than now.

Well Americans also have the right to not be unduly harassed or restricted, and to be able to retain a measure of dignity in their comings and goings in harmony with the right to keep and bear arms. However it would be a conflict worthy of consideration should a non New Yorker be able to bear an arm in New York while a New Yorker could not.

Try a site that isn't a biased one financed by the VPC. I wouldn't argue based on NRA stats, so I ignore any argument based on VPC stats, as VPC is as biased (in the opposite direction) as is the NRA.
