If you could add a 5th face to Mount Rushmore, who would it be?

    Interesting thought. ML King, historically speaking would be a good choice...Non political and practiced peaceful methods to solve a problem of the day.

    Thread;

    If keeping to Presidents, I'd vote for Reagan who was well respected by a large majority in many areas of life, for more than just being a President. The ending of the "Cold War" and his influence with foreign leaders will never be exceeded (IMO) are just a few of my reasons.

    As for Obama, it will never happen simply because he failed to unit the society and in time may have ruined the country for decades, if not permanently. While he was a "First", being a progressive/socialist will never be recognized by a diverse society, who are here or came here for the reasons set forth on paper, some 235 years ago, to get away from some "progressive/socialist" Government.

    All in all though, I hope a fifth face is added and one contemporary historian choose. It's important to any generation to have and honor people of their day or even some near past generation.

    That's probably true. Something to think about when electing someone who will be 69 in 2016 and 73, if reelected, in 2020.

    James Knox Polk !

    Upon his inauguration he declared himself a one term president.
    Although usually this creates a Lame Duck effect, he was empowered and a tireless worker who died shortly after the end of his one term.

    Besides the Admission of the Republic of Texas to these United States of America, he also shepherded the American southwest including California into the American fold and did not carry out his promise of 54'40" or fight, but compromised on the 49th parallel. Polk's black mark.
    He also fostered a new financial system that lasted until the early 20th century, so he wasn't only about acquisition of territory.

    Polk has gotta be the most successful one term President in American history.

    FDR would be the obvious and overwhelming choice of both historians and the American public, no doubt, but I have long been the honourary chairman of the Mount Rushmore Restoration Society whose objective is to undo the adze-weilding Gutzon Borglum's dissipated blight and return the magnificent eminence to the obliterated grandeur that the Great Spirit hath wrought.

    Madison, of course. Then chisel off despot Lincoln, as he never deserved to be up there, and replace him with another of Jefferson as one isn't enough for that brilliant statesman.

    Yes, Jefferson was the man. He fathered 5 or 6 children with his enslaved mistress, Sally Hemings. Sally also just happened to be the half sister of his deceased wife. What a guy! :unclesam:

    Jeez, and conservatives accuse us of the hero worship thing. I've never seen so many cons slobbering over Reagan. I should bookmark this thread just for rebuttal purposes.

    the first black President would be a good one, that was a major changing point in our history, maybe the first women would be another good one, something to show future children regardless of race or gender they can all dream the same dream......
