Yes, and yes - read and seen the both of them! It would take a HUGE shift in not only cultural practice, but in dining practice as well for his farming methods to become widespread. People would have to realize that they're not supposed to be able to walk into a Denny's in Bangor, Maine in the middle of January and expect to have a dinner salad. By expecting this to be available, we've shifted away from food as it used to be towards a mass-produced, genetically-engineered commodity that isn't designed for taste, but is designed to survive the rigors of trans-continental shipping. The reason the average restaurant tomato tastes so bland is because it wasn't engineered to be flavorful, it was engineered to have the maximum shelf-life possible, and survive the trip from the tomato fields of California to the salad bar at the above mentioned Denny's in Maine.
Interesting information SpotsCat. Welcome to the forum MissFortune. That's a nice username. If you have any questions or concerns, our advisors can help you or any moderator who is online. If there light is green, it usually indicates they are available. Jiyuu-Freedom (Jiyuu works!)
I believe it's silly to say that by using others' motivation I am a sheep. By coming to a forum (such as this one) I can read what people have said, do more research on my own, and still come to my own conclusions. It's impossible to escape the influence of another individual in a quest for knowledge unless you intend to repeat the work and research of the millions of scholars who came before us. I can agree that reading a book is the best way to learn, but even the media serves its purpose in a quest for understanding. To achieve clarity one must see things from all sides. I believe websites like these, or on a larger scale conversations/debates in general, are the best way to learn. It's good to meet opposition, if only to strengthen your own beliefs and convictions. I am a college student so I have to say, I have met many amazing professors and students in my time here. It's crazy to think you can become an expert in everything without a little help! Blind faith is not the same as learning from others. What is your purpose on this forum then? To regurgitate your own opinions with the belief that no one anywhere should or could ever benefit from them? I am humble but confidence and ambition are not sins, friend. I totally agree but most people just don't think of these things. I myself was born into a world that taught me I could have anything anytime. It's hard to un-learn these lessons, even when you are "enlightened". That's why I believe government should step in and write some legislation to help push the people in the right direction. Things are changing though, not everyone thinks of locavores as new-age hippies anymore. People are beginning to admit that nutrition isn't a joke, it's a legitimate science. It just trips me out how often business interests are put before those of the individual, but it's our own faults for letting it happen. You should check out Marion Nestle's What To Eat also, it's a great book about grocery store set-up and various issues with food production and junk. I highly recommend it! Thank you Jiyuu and welcome as well chicadora =)
Using others' motivation? Motivation? I think you picked the wrong word there. Why would you use someone's motivation? Do you not have your own? I never said anything about escaping other people's views, I was talking about adopting their stance as your own. Do not put words in my mouth. The media's sole purpose is to inform people of what has happened recently. You deduct your own feelings about the story. Did you understand my point because you seem to want to take this in a stupid direction? Stop right there. Fascinating. You are one of hundreds of people on here with a college education. Unnecessary information, but thanks for letting us know. I never said without any help. I did not say anything about being an expert either. Do not make up an argument. I have had many amazing professors too. I never shaped my opinions around theirs, but to each their own. To waste time. Just like most people. If you come here because you think you can make a difference or learn a lot...hahaha. You are talking to someone with plenty of both, so spare me your passive-aggressive nonsense.
Sorry if you seem to believe I am trying to start a fight, but I was responding to everything you said. If you cannot seek answers in the media, college, publications, or other people, where will you seek it? Not trying to brag by saying I'm in school just saying I support the institution as an ideal. Don't get so defensive I am merely replying to your comment, if you did not want to spark this conversation then perhaps you should have stayed out of this thread. I used motivation exactly as I meant it. I am using others' motivation (the motivation, whatever it may be, to share their thoughts and experiences) to further my own understanding. In reality there are facts, but beyond the facts there are complicated unknowns - people. I seek to see the world with unclouded eyes. Every moment of life can be a learning experience. Even if they don't know what they're talking about, people and their thoughts make a difference every day, both negatively and positively. Waste time? How can thought and debate ever be a waste of time unless you draw nothing from those experiences? Who are you to say what matters? What makes a difference? I believe in my own significance, sorry that you're in a place so small that you feel none. Your pessimism is amusing but this is an endless argument.
Oh sorry. It is easy to assume that when people get really defensive about nothing. You do not seek answers from anyone else but yourself. You seek information from those sources. There is a major difference. Speaking of defensive...I am not. I am openly blunt and that is something you have to deal with when you want to interact and learn from people from different walks of life. If you do not want people's insight and opinion, perhaps you should stay off this message board. That would be a decent essay bit for a state college's admissions department. Because thought and debate do not really occur on the internet. Nothing here is structured. People spout off information without consequence because no one fact-checks them. The internet does not matter. What you say on this website does not matter. Accept that and you might actually enjoy your time here and not be miserable to the rest of us. Also, I would be really careful about assuming what kind of significance and place someone is in. Some of us are significant and actually in "large" places outside of the interwebz. I have done my fair share. Pessimism because I do not believe in a message board. Interesting. Endless argument indeed. And a stupid one on your part. Carry on. I know how much the last word means to young women.
=P I will enjoy myself and learn things at the same time, regardless of your opinion of me. Everything matters, it all adds up to a whole. And screw what you've done, I will carve my own path. Judging by the state of the world I'd say there's work to be done yet. You're the argumentative one trying to put me down in an introduction thread, which by the way has neither scared me away or caused me to question my thoughts. I'll be sure to stick around and annoy you as long as I can - the young woman (w the last words )
