it must be finite, because nothing infinite exists. you can number and measure anything that exists. if the universe exists then it can be measured and numbered. therefore it is finite.

you can't travel beyond the edge of the universe. it's impossible for reasons i'm not entirely sure of. if you could overcome the velocity of the expanding universe, which is impossible, you would likely enter a void where physics do not function. or, you may simply become the furthest edge of the universe.

in your ocean analogy... you could set a buoy up, sail in a strait line, measure how far your go till you hit your buoy again.... finite

so this is the one magical spot in space where a universe just happens to exist.... but beyond it, theres infinite nothingness...

Space is just part of Creation.

yes, matter is the rare exception to the norm, which is nothingness. nothingness can be infinite, because it isn't something. matter must be finite, because you can look at it, touch it, name it. you can't do that with something that is infinite.

You mean god can't make an infinite universe, or is there something in the bible that said god didn't make an infinite universe?

i don't get why? I think it is far more likely there is an "infinite" amount of stuff out there, then this being some magical spot where a universe happened to just poof into existance

True. But it would have no edges so you never reach a wall.

I'm with you on this one. I've seen lots of people say that real infinities can't exist but I don't find their reasons for saying so compelling.

Finite, but you would never reach a wall. This is the flaw in your original post.

Because "God" wouldn't create something that was too hard for Christians to understand, perhaps... ? [IMG]

    Agreed.

Maybe we simply need to reverse our presumptions... i.e. why shouldn't there be an infinite amount of matter (that is, in our observable universe plus any others which may exist beyond that)? Since we know matter exists, what precisely is there to constrain it from existing infinitely... in terms of the amount of matter which might conceivably exist, I mean?

I agree that you could go in circles, cruisin forever... but a circle is a finite. It has dementions.

MMMMMMM HATRED  Let your HATE for these "dumb Christians" be free. Share it with me..

I would guess there is an average amount of matter to space. Sence space goes on forever.... so does matter..

Actually, I was being IRONIC, hence the not exactly very subtle smiley.

I don't actually hate anyone particularly. Except chavs and Manchester Utd fans of course, obviously.

Yes agreed. There's probably a finite amount of matter in our observable universe, but like you say, beyond that... ?

Are you aware what the word "infinite" means?

Are YOU aware of what infinite means? I went on about it at great length in this thread.

Your original post said that if you sailed out forever you would either hit a wall or the universe is infinite. This is WRONG. The universe can be finite AND without walls.
