Wait a minute . . . you actually thought that anytime a new president enters the Oval Office that actually makes all previous treaties -- signed by the United States prior to his or her taking the oath of office -- null and void?

Japan is acting like a stubborn child running the risk of being spanked, humiliated and embarrassed by the Chinese. China could crush, vaporize and take all of Japan's toys in about two hours. Hopefully, common sense will prevail and it won't happen. America, and the world, would lose its source to the only reliable vehicles in the world -- Hondas!

Our government seems to think so. Their using federal land to mine the coal and taxpayers to subsidized the operation. Cheap coal for China and cheap trinkets for us. Oh joy.

It's part of the war on terrorism and just because we are pulling out of both does not mean the war is over. We are still in a covert war on terrorism which includes drones and special operations. And it's not a Republican running the war now, it's a Democrat.

Speaking just for me; I have no desire to see one of my grandsons get his ass fried over a couple of (*)(*)(*)(*) ant islands that are of absolutely no tactical interest to the US.

Well, Obama is in Japan now trying to convince the Japanese that your grandsons WILL defend their islands... All previous american presidents regardless of their party affiliation did exactly the same thing. But they are not keeping these promises, so I guess all is well, Georgia got screwed by these empty promises, Ukraine was disarmed in exchange for these promises and got screwed, now it's Japan's turn I suppose...except of course it's probably not going to work anymore...America's and West's promises are worthless and the world is catching on.

How do you know what is on that island? Could be a secret weapon that would give the owner a very serious tactical advantage.

A 'link' is not the same as being a signatory to the Treaty. This is Europe's problem, let Europe fix it.

Besides that there's a little question of genocide and atrocities committed by Japan against the Chinese which they haven't apologized for...nor have they given them any compensation. Of course the islands could be given as a good will gesture. .. Yeah right!

(Funny how we always support supremacists and terrorists, is there something wrong with us? :wall:)

Hussein Obama neutered the US armed forces so Japan is on their own against China. Just as Ukraine (and Moldova, and Latvia, and Estonia, and Lithuania, and Finland, and Poland) is on its own against Russia.

Sea war between Japan and China will be interesting to watch, but it won't be World War III.

China didn't decree that just aircraft from Japan would have to ask permission from China to fly over a large stretch of sea around the islands. China decreed that no nation could fly over that large stretch of sea around the islands. That is the reason the American government quickly sent two military jets over that part of the sea and then China scrambled jets, though didn't actually fire on the American jets. Then, when America sent a warship into that area of the sea, China sent a warship to move in front of the American ship and stop, daring the American ship to ram the Chinese ship. The American ship didn't ram the Chinese ship, but I don't know if that counts as anyone winning.

The American military hasn't been neutered. For example the number of drones has been increased. However, the American military was never strong enough to fight against an alliance of the BRIC nations, Brazil, Russia, India, and China. That has nothing to do with President Obama. It was the same under Bush. There are practical considerations. Even if we were spending 5 or 6 trillion dollars per year on the military, it seems likely that America still wouldn't be strong enough to fight against the more than 3 billion people in Brazil, Russia, India, and China.

Now here is the uncertainty. The BRIC alliance is an economic alliance, and the members have only done a few military exercises together. If they are fully allied in the military sense, ready to go to war, that would be a secret treaty among them. There have been many secret treaties in past history, but whether or not the BRIC nations now have such a secret treaty, I don't know. I will assign a 50% probability to BRIC having a full military secret treaty, but my probability estimate is somewhat arbitrary. Your guess would probably be as good as mine.

A pacifist president could not be elected.

Notice that except for serious treaty allies such as NATO, the United States doesn't promise protection. The government always says it might intervene. Notice that the United States is sending several hundred troops each to Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. The Russian foreign minister yesterday says that if America does that, Russia will respond by sending Russian troops to the borders of those countries. So it will be informative to see what happens there in the next few weeks. Russia has no defense need to move troops to the borders of those nations because a few hundred American troops to each is no threat to Russia. A few hundred American troops aren't going to invade Russia.

Now, one thing I will be watching for is a coordination of troops sent to the borders of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania with military activity on the coast and in the disputed ocean areas near China. If tension increases in tandem, that will raise my probability estimate of the possibility of a serious secret military treaty among the BRIC nations.

If the US and China go to war with each other, and at the same time, Russia invades the EU, then the islands will be only a tiny part of the war.

Remember that China wants to replace the United States as the leader of the new world order, and as the only remaining superpower in the world.

Japan couldn't possibly win, and once a war between China and Japan started, it would probably lead to China invading Japan.

So would the United States want to see Japan become part of China?

Well then, dissolve NATO de facto and replace it with something like a multinational rapid deployment task force to wage small scale wars to protect vital interests of senior members if they converge. This would be more fitting since such projection of force would be aggressive whereas NATO was originally intended to be defensive in nature and scope. Whereas the US forces command structure may have been somewhat altered or restructured according to some PC lines, the US is still spending 10X on the military than the next 10 nations, so the grevience is dubious or conditional on the type of conflict involved.
