If they did, they'd already be bankrupt. Yet they remain one of the biggest companies in the world. What you "think" here is complete bull ****.

Agree about the crap Hollywood chrns out, but that's been happening for more than a decade. Remakes, sequels, prequels, movies based on toys, amusement park rides, and video games ... blech.

I understood the writer's strike last year, but my question is, writing what?

They are not casting a woman as Sparrow. They are adding a new movie to the franchise with a new pirate...one who is a woman.

Strange New Worlds was amazing! Discovery got a bit boring at times, but it was generally good. Loved Voyager, especially after Seven of Nine started appearing. I think Enterprise was underrated because of it's so-so first year. Deep Space 9 was fabulous but they dropped the ball with that absurd finale. The Next Generation was great from beginning to end. Picard was ok, but the last year was great! Seven of Nine again my favorite character. I am now watching TOS again. First time I was about 9. Different era, but you can still appreciate some great stories. I love it every time you get a reference used by the later series.

We're (hopefully) moving towards the end of a period of sequels, remakes and adaptions that are primarily created to cash-in on previous success of a property. Some are good but many aren't and plenty of those get criticised (fairly or not). I'm not convinced "woke" is actually a key element of that, and calling people bigots in an automatic defence against criticism, though it can be somewhat legitimate if the criticism is actually based on bigotry (such as moaning just because characters happen to be female).

I think you're oversimplifying things to fit your conclusion. Plenty of people complained about the extensive flaws in the sequels based on the legitimate facts, and so generally didn't face that defence. Those people whose complaints include (or are exclusively) "Wah! It's a girl!" quite rightly faced that kind of response though. After all, there were plenty of similar flaws with the prequels too, but they didn't suffer the same angle of complaints because most of the lead characters happened to be male.

It’s one more example of how to do everything woke. Instead of learned from the losses Disney realized from their other woke movie making adventures, they double down one it.

I am so glad I dumped my Disney stock when I did. Disney might become another General Motors at this rate.

There were lots of black pirates of the Caribbean, many of them Jews.

    So it's hardly race swapping

For sure. In fact, pirate ships were comparatively egalitarian when compared to the mainland.

True. Despite stories about tyrannical captains (and those certainly did exist), the potential for mutiny helped make things more democratic, and crews would typically elect new captains when one died or "fell overboard." I know for sure Blackbeard had several fugitive slaves serving on his ships, with at least one as his lieutenant. I'm sure he was far from the only one.

GM once had an economy that was slightly larger Poland. When I worked at AT&T, it was the largest company in the world. It was bankrupt when another company bought the name.

Django, 12 years a slave suggest otherwise.

Hidden Figures (loved it!). A Colour Purple.

    Driving miss Daisy...

And the mental imprints of many more iconic movies are coming into my mind.

Should we boycott Disney for casting a woman to play a female character now?

I was addressing your claim that somehow white people don't like black actors.

That's kind of hard to reconcile with the fact that so many of them consume elements of Black culture. Just look how many of them think it's so cool to imitate the thug life portion of the culture.

Look at how many of the white single mothers are still waiting on him to come back from the store with the milk and the cigarettes.
