You are mistaken. Meeting California standards will require lighter smaller cars along with very expensive new smog reducing technology. Cars today have already been electronically tweaked as far as possible to squeeze out ever possible mpg.

Still a small fraction of overall sales and we can't let them force very expensive government imposed standards on the rest of us
. Government imposed are the operative words here

The things that make cars more fuel efficient are almost entirely under the drivers control.

You mean you can't just keep reducing the fuel in a combustion engine and it won't keep working? Whaaa.

California cannot legally impose anything on the other 49 states. If the automakers are bending to the will of California then it is on them.

They're free to move to CA and make them there.

    Otherwise it's interstate commerce.

No. Not so. The way you drive is just a small part of it.

California pollution standards are a joke.. My brother has a nice organized pegboard in the garage that he hangs all his trucks smog stuff on and once a year he reequips his vehicle with them, passes smog and then takes those parts back off and hangs them back on the pegboard until the next year.. The odd thing is the yearly smog check and the state fee's are really all it's about, and no one/vehicle is ever checked beyond that lil piece of paper that says you and that vehicle are in compliance..

Everything in CALIFORNIA is a scam, illusion and in almost every instance JUST a means to suck a buck out of citizens! California is a plague and it should be kept contained within its borders..

    BFS.
    Don't be simple.
What you describe doesn't take government mandates to accomplish

There is something in constitutional law referred to as the dormant commerce clause. This is what we are seeing a smart admin use to protect the auto industry and consumers in 49 states.

How dare they violate interstate commerce. Their trying to dictate their standard to automobiles that are sold across state lines violates interstate commerce the federal government's authority to set such standards.

It's a matter of weight to power.
