Rumors are they used missiles for this attack along with UAV's. The drones the Houthi have are smaller than most we are used to seeing from the USA, but larger than personal drones.

Here is an article of some of the new ones they have been showing off.

They would appear to be capable: Looks like they might soon be in the market for an Israeli Iron Dome System

GOOD THING WE HAVE FRACKERS: Saudi Arabia Shuts Down About Half Its Oil Output After Drone Strikes: Shutdown amounts to a loss of some five million barrels a day, roughly 5% of the world’s daily production of crude.

“Coordinated drone strikes on the heart of the Saudi oil industry forced the kingdom to shut down half its crude production on Saturday, potentially roiling petroleum prices and demonstrating the power of Iran’s proxies. Yemen’s Iranian-aligned Houthi rebels claimed credit for the attack. Officials said they hoped to restore production to its regular level of 9.8 million barrels a day by Monday.”

If only the Israel's Iron Dome was as good as Israeli propaganda:

    https://www.jta.org/2019/05/07/isra...-dead-israelis-is-the-iron-dome-getting-worse
700 rockets, 240 intercepts, 4 dead Israelis: Is the Iron Dome getting worse?

In the meantime, little surprise that the US would try to point the finger of blame at Iran! Even as the Saudis themselves haven't said much about it.
    https://www.cnbc.com/2019/09/14/us-blames-iran-for-drone-strikes-on-saudi-oilfield.html
The last sentence was really surprising, though. What is he saying? That the US is too embarrassed that its expensive systems couldn't pick up an attack from the Houthis? And so they need to pretend the attack came from somewhere else?

Ok so temporarily shut down 50% of production, their economy is heavy oil reliant so at least 30% of their revenue..maybe 40%? The problem the Saudis have is they are big spenders, MbS made lots of money from his Sheikh down but he's been investing it in black holes like $10 billion in South Africa's corrupt money vaporising electricity grid in 2018. They're going to have to become money sensible fast because things are going sideways on the Arabian Peninsula

Iran Houthis or what ever, those dangerous toys apparently can not be detected by US equipment.
Low tech pusher drones, twice the size of a normal RC plane, with a nice little 4 stroke, some GPS and kabooooooooom.

There is not much to it. I am in RC. If I see what some of the top guys do, or are able to do with stock market electronics. You can buy that stuff on e-bay. Modifying it, is not that big a deal.
Building a small airplane, out of fiberglass is not that difficult, even carbon. You can buy that stuff online.
Small 4 strokes and a proper wooden propeller, online.
Its all there and not rocket science

What kind of payload would such drones be able to carry and how far can they fly?

What kind of off the shelf electronics could remotely operate a drone at those distances?

Iran makes different types of drones, some bigger than others. Some of the Houthi drones appear to resemble what this article mistakenly calls the "Ababil-T" drones (Ardebil is the correct name) made by Iran (and now by Hezbollah as well), which are much smaller, simpler, and have far less range and endurance such as Shahed 129. Don't know much about the particular drones used in this operation.

I'm a little puzzled by the fake outrage.
The US sells SA military stuff and intelligence information to bomb Yemen into the stone age, but it's not right for Iran to sell the Hooters drones to fight back.

The Houthis began attacking KSA in cross border raids 3 years before KSA fought back in 2015. You might want to learn a bit of history about Yemen.

The movie "will put all the American interests in Iraq in danger," the militia leader, Qais al-Khazali, told The Associated Press.

2008 attack on the United States embassy in Yemen - Wikipedia
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2008_attack_on_the_American_Embassy_in_Yemen

    • The 2008 U.S. embassy attack in Yemen in Sana'a, Yemen on September 17, 2008, resulted in 18 deaths and 16 injuries. Six attackers, six Yemeni police, and six civilians were killed. This attack was the second occurring in the same year, after a mortar attack earlier in 2008 on March 18 missed the embassy and instead hit a nearby girls' school. Islamic Jihad of Yemen, an al Qaeda affiliate, claimed responsibility for the attack.

I don't understand what Al Queda attacks, which targeted Iranian diplomats as much if not more, have anything to do with the Saudi war against the Houthis! While not technically allies of the Saudi backed groups, AQ is in fact one of the groups fighting the Houthis. And the Saudis never even claimed they are bombarding Yemen, and committing genocide there, to take out Al Queda from Yemen! If that was their intention, they would find the Houthis on their side!
