    It doesn't - each EU-country has its own military-force.

The DoD has an air-force base in Germany that handles wounded that we pull out of the various Middle-east skirmishes that we still get into occasionally. And there's a US Naval base near Naples.

All the rest are doing God-knows-what but they amount to a sizeable contingent in the EU (around 300K all total)... (See here).

Its an interesting thought but that particular horse has departed the stable many decades ago...ask yourself why then... does the US wish to remain in its bases at RAF Lakenheath and RAF Mildenhall for example... and a quick heads-up for you....it has nothing to do with the "Defence" of Europe.

Some American fella upwards in this thread posed the point that all these hulks of ships with planes klinging to the decks were about force projection....if you withdraw all your projecting bits then what are you going to prong with? Its a great old fashioned carpet beater this argument about "why don't the Europeans pay their way" well if it was really so important then why wouldn't the US simply not up sticks and withdraw back to the good ol US of A? Or is there some other reason? I'm sure this line plays well in the States, I mean the argument is rather simplistic and sounds great at home.... A US President and all the lads can line up on Fox wittering on about the cost and this and that and blah blah and sound tough to their domestic audience but .... and here's the thing.... its really all a total load of bollox when you look at the geo-political stakes and interactions that the US is playing within. Maybe the US needs to get some people in their media that can ask the right questions about the more subtle aspects of what goes on in the world and the US's role in it.... and maybe the US people might just get to hear about the reality of what they are involved in and how banal some of what they are being told actually is.

If that's the case then why do you care about the US defence industry, military lobbyists et al and their role in government and how your taxes are being fundamentally pissed up the wall?
