http://abc13.com/news/ut-miss-black-winner-criticized-for-not-being-black-enough/1959571/ Just saw this on Good Morning America. This echoes NFL critics of certain biracial QBs. Then Hit google and noticed all the usual players not covering the story. Shocking So, can we conclude the critics are racist? For all the complaining about racial divide THIS really is the root of it all. The source of the problems. Let's not even mention the fact that the pagent itself is racist, but that's besides the point. Imagine a white ONLY pageant? How can it even legally exist in this day and age?
A person can identify as anything he or she wants to be but not black, that's too funny. I like how the black judges chose a 'not black enough' woman over those who were. Does anyone ever ask for proof when a man says he's a woman?
She's certainly "black" as Barry Obama is. Which of these judges of blackness have rejected Obama as a black president?
This is going to sound weird but I can actually understand why some may have a problem with this. The point of a "black" beauty contest in the eyes of many is to showcase the beauty of black women. And when people think of "black woman" this lady isn't what comes to mind in most peoples eyes. Sounds a bit messed up but people were probably expecting a more traditional looking black woman to win and not the woman who you wouldn't even be able to tell she was black unless she told you. Hell I'm black myself and I didn't think she was black at all. But I can see how this could be a bit offensive to those involved. For her to win a "black" beauty contest in the eyes of many it could be seen as she was chosen by judges because she looked the LEAST like a black person over the other contestants who look more like what society universally considers "black people" look like. I don't know, I usually laugh when minorities get up in arms about things because a lot of the times the anger is unwarranted. But in this case I can actually see why this could be seen as messed up. The "black woman" who looks nothing at all like a "black woman" wins a "black woman" beauty contest. It's like what are you trying to say? I understand the concern with this one...
.Maybe they should just come right out and have a 'Pure Blood' beauty contest if that's what is required,,,,
The civil rights bill exempted private organization. For a long time, Augusta National golf club that hosts the Masters in Augusta didn't admit blacks until 1990 and women until 2012. Perfectly legal since they were a private club. I didn't see whether it was a private organization or not in the article for the pageant except it was hosted by Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity. It is my understanding that UT is a public university, so hosting or having only a black beauty pageant I would think is against the civil rights law. I have another question, is Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity an all black fraternity? If so that too is probably against the civil rights law. That is if UT is a public university. Now inter-racial marriages are becoming quite common. Here are the percentages from Pew Research. Why they left out Hispanics, I don't know. http://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2015/06/12/interracial-marriage-who-is-marrying-out/ Inter-racial marriages are definitely on the rise. The more the merrier. There is way too much emphasis placed on race in my opinion to begin with. Look at it this way, way back when when man first left Africa, they left as one race. Then mankind populated the four corners of the globe, out of one came many due to many reasons. Today mankind is headed back to being one race. It is but a matter of time.
Black pain runs deep, which is understandable because of man resons. What many people don't understand is the pain that people of mixed races endure also. I say congrats to her and that many more blessings come her way. Roll on sister.
Bitch, you better show me your Ancestry.com papers, to prove to me that you're (fill in the blank) enough.
Sort of like Caitlin Jenner being named Woman of the Year! When I first saw the story, I assumed that this was another colorism issue in the black community where she was being hated for winning because she is light skinned, but after looking at a couple of pictures of her, she looks white to me. So I think I agree that she isn't really meeting the expectations of the pageant. Sure, her dad is black, but I bet a DNA test would show she's a lot less black than half. If the one drop rule applies to pageants like this, a lot of white girls, who pass as and identify as white, could qualify. And if that's the case whats the point?
Eh not really the same as the Caitlin Jenner thing because he purposefully made himself a woman through surgery and drugs. It's not this girl's fault she looks the way she does it's just genetics and nature. Now if she were actually much darker skinned and bleached herself then entered the contest and won then it would be a better comparison. I'm not saying she didn't have a right to win but I do understand how many could view this as a blatant slap in the face. Black people are one of the most unique races in the world due to the variety of features that are different than "everybody else", mainly the obvious like the dark skin. Plus the hair especially in men. Our hair is very different than everyone elses. So in saying that there is a good deal of pride among black people about their "different" looking features. So when a girl enters a black beauty contest who looks way more Caucasian or hispanic than she does black, and beats all of the other contestants who look like "black people" then that raises some concerns about how beauty among black women is perceived. In layman's terms, to many folks, it's basically saying the LESS you look like an actual black person the BETTER you look because the white/latina looking girl was voted the prettiest. Plus within the black community itself there's always been good and bad natured conflict between light skinned and dark skinned black folks. If she were a "light skinned looking" black woman like Beyonce or something she'd still get crap by a lot of people for winning over the darker skinned black women but thats normal due to the aforementioned reasons. But the fact is that shes not even what is widely accepted as a "light skinned" black woman, the girl looks like a white person or a hispanic person. I mean yeah she technically is a "light skinned" black woman but she doesn't look like one. It'd be one thing if this wasn't a race specific beauty contest like Ms America or something because all races are included in there and it's based on just overall beauty. But this being a "black" beauty contest and the black girl who looks virtually nothing at all like a black girl ends up winning...That would upset a lot of people and I can understand that. Me personally I honestly don't care whatsoever, but I can see why other black people do.
Wh So fight past abolished racism with even more chosen currently supported racism? Does that sound logical at all?
Racism isn't abolished. In case you didn't catch it the first time, the purpose was to uplift black women who barely had any presence and in some ways, still don't.
Another tweeted: "I doubt she has ever dealt with some of the harsh realities of what it actually means to be "black" but congrats." Neither have Sasha or Malia Obama, but nobody questions their blackness. The Obama girls, like this girl, have parents who give a crap. Crazy how that is so much more successful at giving black children good lives than government action.
They sure do. Cry about , and endorse racism all at the same time depending on which color is the beneficiary and which one is the victim. No need to take any of them seriously on any race related matter. Bunch of absolute frauds.
