Hot on the press at this time in Australia is the Obama’s visit. I am astonished that this did not even get a mention in this section. The political stirrings that this has caused in the region, the impact of rhetoric and just the idea of The US partnering Australia in the Asia pacific.

Seems strange that many of the current government supporters, that continue to denounce the US have remain silent. Is this because their great advocate is far to busy polishing Obama's shows with her own spital?

    Strange at the best.

I notice another expansion of the US military, in the guise of countering any attempt at Chinese aggression.

It doesn't seem like a cutback on US expenditure to me, yet I haven't yet seen a GOP statement condemning the increased costs.

A question for Australians. Do you know if this arrangement permits any US military personnel from being arrested and tried for criminal activity in an Australian court? If you don't and if I were an Aussie, I would certainly want an answer to that.

This is the real sticking point. This political military agreement can only raise the tension in the region, with countries, Most Australians, are completely ignorant to any problem. Look across the board, Australians here believe that the China Australian relations are so good, they could never have any reason to argue with them.

Maybe they will be getting a wake up call, that this region is not as stable as they would like to believe.

I don't think you will either. BUT I await to see the details of any agreement, just to see where the finances are coming from.
A very good point, and question that does need to be answered. I for one sit on the edge of my seat to hear the answer.

After a US Marine stabbed someone in a night club a few years back and the US then refused to try him (claimed that civilians weren't permitted as witnesses in a court martial) the Australian government at the time basically said that from then on US soldiers in Australia will be arrested and tried in Australia. Whether that was just angry rhetoric at the time remains to be seen.

Apparently this is 2 500 US Marines over a 12 month period, not the building of a base and 58 million troops as I've been seeing people claim.

Right now Obama is about to address Parliament. Julia Gillard has given a speech, the budgie smuggler is giving his speech, and hopefully, eventually, they will let poor Obama get a word in.

...........The president honoured Australia's war dead by laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

He made his way past the Wall of Remembrance, which contains the names of more than 100,000 Australians killed in action, pausing for a moment to reflect on two of the panels.

The first was for HMAS Sydney, sunk with no survivors in Australia's worst naval disaster in 1941.

The second was for more than 30 Australian airmen who lost their lives serving with the US Armed Air Force in World War II..........

Do you know what time he is due to address Parliament? I have to leave for an interview shortly and I want to watch the speech before I go.

Come on, 58 million? Surely, anybody laying that claim would be seen as an irrelevant idiot.

Oops, it may well come from some of those clowns in the Australian parliament, like Gillard, Brown or Abbott. I should not say such things

And seing Tony Abbotts in Parliament saying how great the US are, the least self-centered nation of all, makes me absolutely sick...

    My 2 cents,

I would rather not have the US troops here in Australia because the rest of the world might start looking at us as little brother.

The US right now is like Rome in its day, when she falls the rest of the world will cry a shout of freedom from political, financial and military rule.

I wouldn't want to be associated with a big bully and yes i do agree we do lick abit of boot or should i say arse when it comes to the US.

And how ironic we are helping the US have a military presence because of China and China is our biggest client when it comes to minerals.

If the Chinesse went else where to buy all their commodities i can understand why.

When your supplier stretches out one hand in freindship while the other is on his gun holster.

I say send the romans back to rome.

From an American standpoint you make a persuasive case as to why America can't consider Australia an ally. The American/Oz alliance should end completely and permanently. Australia is outside the American sphere of influence.

But the perfect place to lob a nuclear weapon on China when retaliation will only cost 2500 American lives and the destruction of a continent.

America can reach out and touch the lives of hundreds of millions from American soil. The US needs no bases in Australia to deal death.

That's a distinction without a difference. Australian bases will be used by Americans.
