I refer to their apparent need to dominate in the sectarian sense and the national one, and the readiness to shed blood in order to achieve that domination. It's why the region is ever in turmoil?

Depends on the country and whether they were a colony of British or European power.

I don't see those characteristics as unique to the Islamic world if you compare the innumerable Religious & Nationalistic Wars in Europe throughout recorded history to the relatively tranquil Mid East under the religiously tolerant Ottoman rule.
Mid East turmoil and anti Western sentiment began with the meddlesome plundering & micromanaging of the Colonial Powers & continues today with the instigation of Warring proxies: US & Israeli backed IS & Sunni Syrian Rebels, vs Russian & Iranian backed Shia.

    For Example:

“Every time anyone says that Israel is our only friend in the Middle East, I can’t help but think that before Israel, we had no enemies in the Middle East.”– John Sheehan, Society of Jesus. (Jesuit priest)

I know nothing of the history of the region, nor am interested enough to want to; my comments are apropos the present.
