    Ranked Vote: Discussion Thread

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Alright folks, a bit of a hiatus for me, but its time to get back to it. And to kick things back off, this vote is going to be the first serious vote in the series. That's right...no more ice-cream, time to put away the cell phones. 'Cause its finally time to start voting on some real serious political issues,

    Serious Mode, Activate!

...so...goodbye for now cellphone,...you will be missed...

This vote is part of a multipart series of Ranked votes I'm setting up to test out just how alternative voting methods like Instant Runoff and Ranked Pairs stack up against your standard Plurality Vote. For more info check out these related discussion threads (but be warned, the last two are a bit of a read):
Ranked Vote: Discussion Thread (includes schedule)
What To Do To Reduce Partisan Dysfunction In Politics
Solutions Oriented Approach to Restoring Meaningful Civil Discourse

The topic this time around is as the title of the thread describes. What are the Nation's Top Issues Most Needing to be Addressed? These issues can be problems that the country is currently facing, or issues that may arise sometime in the near future. The question here is pretty open-ended, but mainly what's being asked is in relation specifically to problems or potential problems as faced by the United States, though there are of course some issues which are faced across country lines. (if any of you folk from different countries asks nicely, I may set a similar vote for other places latter on)

The process for this Ranked vote will go as follows:
Today, I'm asking you guys to submit nominations for what you think are the top issues. You can nominate any issue you want (for now) as long as it isn't already in the list. And since this is a serious thread, I'll be letting everything run for twice as long as compared to those other Ranked Vote threads. So the nomination phase for this one will last from the time of me posting this all the way to 2 days from now ( 4/28 ), after which I'll assign letters to each of the nominated options, and then begin the voting phase.

Once the voting phase begins and I've assigned the letters, voting will run through Friday ( 6/8 ).
To cast a vote, just post the letters of your picks in order of preference starting with
the issue you think is most problematic/most needing to be addressed.

    Example: A, B, C.

(Also, please do actually post the letters when you vote, it really helps a lot)

As for the nominations, I'll start us off by adding a few to the list I think are important issues that we should address. Post your suggestions for other issues in this thread and I'll add them onto the list as we go.

And since this is the first serious vote in the series, I want to start things off right, so I hate to say it, but there will be no bonus options this time around. Please accept these serious-looking pictures as consolation.

Also, I know the urge will be hard to resist with a thread topic like this, but please let's try to keep the trolling remarks to a minimum.

The 2nd Amendment is a can of worms that probably won't ever see any changes.

Slick Willy got a Federal assault rifle ban, but I doubt this will ever happen again at the Federal level even though the Roberts court favors it by 7 to 2.

K-12 vouchers would be a good idea, but a better idea is for the Fed's to get completely OUT of the education business and leave that to the States.

North Korea should be on the list.

The need for term limits on Congress.

Otherwise, your list covers the issues pretty well.

Thanks! Although...I'm probably actually one of the more active mods, at least when it comes to moderation,
but I don't really post a whole lot, so I guess most members just tend not to notice when I'm around, lol!

But these threads are sort of passion project for me,
so time to come out of obscurity I guess...

Those are actually some really good ones. Thanks!
And I hadn't even thought of term limits for congress-folk,
but now that you've mentioned it, that'll definitely be going somewhere high on my ranking.

    1) mandatory sentencing laws for felons in possession of firearms.
    2) you kill someone you get death penalty.
    3) make prisons and actual punishment, no more TV, no weights or basketball courts. Many prisoners have better lives than homeless vets.
    4) build shipping container homes for the homeless, 2 bedrooms with a shared bathroom.

Thanks! Though note that the purpose of this thread is more about identifying and voting on what the major issues are rather than figuring out right here and now what the specific solutions to those issues should be...so...I had to reword your nominations quite a bit when I added them to the list so that they would fit in well with the others. Please check them over and let me know if you approve.

Also, for a thread that is geared towards posting solutions, you might be interested in checking out any one of the threads from this post:
http://www.politicalforum.com/index.php?threads/ranked-vote-discussion-thread.531007/ with the exception of this one of course...Basically, the ones which are labeled with the tag (discussion started) are the ones you'll want to take a look at.

Lastly, I guess I should have mentioned this sooner,
but I'm planning to take the top 5 or so winners of this Ranked Vote and see to it that solutions-based threads and ranked votes get created for them too, assuming they aren't already in the list...

Woah, I just realized, we've already managed to put together a whopping massive list of options.
28 issues nominated so far. And I did kind of figure there would be a lot for this one.
America lately seems to have gotten itself into a bad habit of repeatedly kicking the proverbial can down the road.
And those proverbial cans tend to pile up after a while as we encounter new ones and then proceed to kick them down the same road...

Ugh, its gonna be choir figuring out how to assign 'letters' to all of these if we get too many more.
There are only 26 in the English Alphabet (and I'd rather not start using numbers :aww:)

Over population. This is creating pollution, crime, high taxes and much more.
Immigration. This is the main cause of over population.
Poor education systems. We need to be competitive with the best.
Excessive welfare. Those who work should live better than those who do not.
    Pussifying of our youth.
National debt. Sooner or later it will need to be paid.

Hi, can you be a bit more specific on this one?
For instance, are you nominating one issue here, or should this be counted as multiple different issues?
We do have one for debt already. How should the other ones read? Thanks!

Executive branch corruption is obviously the #1 issue. Nothing else comes close. Our democracy is literally on the edge of being overthrown, being we have an executive and legislative branch cooperating to destroy the rule of law and define themselves as above the law.

Campaign finance runs second. The ability to buy and bribe politicians through campaign contributions is the source of most of the other problems. The US is unique in the severity of the problem, being how all the other western democracies publicly fund elections at least to some extent.

Sorry to ignore your list, but I must clarify my positions. I’ve chosen very broad subjects, because the issues we need to address are broad.

    1) Political Dysfunction (Partisanship, misinformation, broken public discourse, etc.)

    2) Economic and social Inequality

    3) Sustainability, particularly Global Warming

    4) Global support for human rights and democracy.

    5) Radical Reformation of the Political Process: particularly gerrymandering. Also partial technocratic control within a democratic context.

I added Economic and Social Inequality and Global Sustainability to the list. (we're still in the nomination phase btw)
For numbers 1, 4, and 5 though, were those items that you also wanted me to add something for? We do have in the list currently, items for partisan dysfunction in congress, fake news, General Lack of Meaningful Civil Discourse, and Gerrymandering. Were there other, more specific issues, you thought should be included along side those?

I can see you are dedicated to this list. I notice you mention North Korea and Iran, but not China or Russia, the only two credible military rivals of the U.S.. I think mentioning them, or “maintaining U.S. power against rivals.” Would be useful. It would probably be come 6th for me, after more domestic concerns were addressed.

I added China and Russia to the list, as well as a separate item for maintaining power against rivals.
    Thanks! :)
