This thread is rather silly.

We can't match the power of nature.

We've tested nukes and hydrogen bombs underwater and none of them have created a Tsunami.

Here is an example.

It takes at least an 8.0 earthquake under the sea floor to create a Tsunami and much of that depends on other factors as well. The material on the floor of the ocean the geography of the seabed, even the temperature of the water plays a factor so not all earthquakes cause tsunami's. Now, in terms of power we can't even come close to it.

A basic 8.0 earthquake has the equivalent power of setting of 23,000 nuclear bombs. Now we have tech to make bigger bombs such as the Tsar bomb which is about 10x that yield but still not even close to an earthquake.

You have to realize that plate tectonics are so powerful they are actually moving giant chunks of the earth around.

We cannot emulate that with even our most powerful weapons. Now the Tsar weapon, the largest weapon ever ignited by humans had a concussion wave that was felt almost 700 miles away and it shot a plume 64 miles into the air....into space basically. The Russians were actually afraid it would rip a whole in the atmosphere.

Now if we set a weapon like the Tsar off say 100 miles off the coast of LA would it create a Tsunami?

Nope. It would kill a lot of sealife, make the air around the area dirty and probably tear a 1/4 mile into the sea floor but all it would do is create a small wave that would dissipate in a few miles. The reason for this is because of how energy is released. A tsunami works on wave lengths, its moving an entire area of the ocean up and down so a tsunami isn't a wave its almost like a river that is created, its a series of waves accompanied by a surge of water. In order to duplicate that we would need to move miles of the seabed up and down in rapid movements.

Even our biggest nuke is going to expend almost all of its energy sideways in the water and upwards which really only affects the area around it. All of the energy from an earthquake is directed upwards, pushing the entire ocean upwards. It is such a massively powerful event we don't have anything that could ever duplicate it.

The Tsar bomb is equal to about a billion tons of TNT....pretty powerful, but we would need to place probably around 1000 of them, buried deep in the sea floor over miles to even come close to the power of a small earthquake.

And remember, that for a tsunami to happen you need mass displacing water, a nuke does not contain mass, only energy so its not going to move much around, just disintegrate it.

Now if you were to blow off the side of a mountain and have it fall in the ocean you could create a tsunami that way I suppose.
