The Soviets tactics during WW ll were using a large artillery barrage followed up with a massive frontal attack.

The only time the German Wehrmacht was defeated on the battlefield was when they were superiorly outnumbered.


No one knows for sure what the Russians army tactics would be used today but it's likely they may have adopted America's tactics that were adopted during the 1980's of maneuver warfare.

Where the Russians have an edge over the American military today is in electronic warfare.

At the beginning of the war, when the Soviet army was defeated? Of course.

At the end of the war, when the Wehrmacht was defeated? On the contrary, the Soviet army suffered much less losses than the German army.

But when I look at photos of todays Russian soldiers I look at their eyes looking for if their eyes are glassy looking, signs of alcoholism.

 

About 25% of the dead soldiers were pows. The Germans killed 3 million pows.

After WW ll American and the British debriefed all German officers and everyone was asked "Why do you think you lost the war " ?

Almost all answered with the same answer.

Hitler and that Germany didn't wage total war until 1943 and by then they had already lost the war.

Where as the British, USA and Russia fought total war from day one.

The United States has only fought two wars as total war, the American Civil War and the Second World War.

 

I think it's fair for all wars of all times.

"A massive frontal attack" sounds negative, like not-flexible, stupid etc. But Soviet tactics changed during the war. Artillery barrage was effective when artillery could provide some level of effective fire - that first of all means communication, logistics, direction, high professional skills of gunners and so on. Also special training for infantry, communication between divisions, special tactics to storm German defence lines, mine clearing and many-many more details. Red Army learned all of that step by step and it took quite a long time, but after 1943 Red Army achieved some excellency at conducting military operations against German forces. Brilliant operations like Jassy–Kishinev Offensive, for example, where the rate of losses was about 1:10 in favour of Red Army.
So, it wasn't some sort of choice - how to win well without bad casualties. Red Army - through fire and blood, through war and practice - found the technology that allowed to defeat German army.
