Buying stuff is exactly what no one is doing. Apart from canned beans, there's no shopping going on.

If that was their objective, they're idiots.

    Yes, it's a bind.

But I'll take that bind any day, if it means everything gets back to normal faster.

Where did you ever get the idea that the debt should be paid off? The debt per taxpayer is $238,419. Put your check in the mail. =https://www.usdebtclock.org/current-rates.html

ah, you think we should just keep charging the credit card until we pay so much in interest we can't afford to do anything but pay the interest

or we could just go back to taxing the rich what we did under Reagan.. undo the Bush years

In response to any still in denial.
Italy, population 60 million has 4000 covid-19 deaths in two months.
The US, population 6 times that, had 12,000 from H1N1 over a year.

Denial of what? This will kill people, but how many would have died had we not shut the world down?

Compare that number to how many will die because of the economic impact across the world from this global shutdown. The starvation, the other medical issues extreme poverty causes, the lack of aid from the Western world to 3rd world countries, the violence etc...

Which do you think will be greater?

I don’t. And like you I don’t think it would have been close.

No way to ever know of course so it’s all speculation for both views. We will see is the death caused by the economic destruction but we will never know what would have occurred had we not shut down the economy. No way to compare those numbers.

What will be interesting to see is public opinion on it long term. I would guess it will tilt against the shut down long term as people see the death, misery and even feel the impact themselves vs what could have occurred had they not shut it down. The real vs the hypnotically in other words.

Well, The flu infects about thirty million a year and kills about thirty thousand. I think that's pretty scary high numbers myself. And yet we don't shut down the economy and hunker in fear. We keep right on working, living and burying our dead. At the same time, three million Americans die every year from all causes. But again, do we shut everything down and go to our burrows? No, we carry on. So what is it about covid19? Is it because we have no vaccine to mitigate it and we aren't prepared to double the nations deaths? I don't know, maybe we should just concede to the experts and hunker down, to one degree or another, until either a vaccine is developed, or economic needs drive us back to productivity. I just wish people would stop hoarding toilet paper and paper towels. It's weird and needless.

You grossly overestimate the impact of foreign aid on populations. The Peace corps shutting down hurts of course but they're mainly educational and it's not unlike a school vacation now. A large portion of the rest of the aid is military aid and I'm sure Israel and egyptian armies will feel a pinch but not too much Joe six pack. Having million upon millions die of the virus would impact the third world.

True but I was thinking more of future aid, the west will pull back on that as they need the resources to deal with their own issues caused by the shutdown. They will hurt the 3rd world countries.

I'll side with saving US lives first but their will be a impact to other less developed nations.

If YOU are concerned about the Depredations being suffered by "Third World Countries"
due to the present Plan'demic, YOU are to be commended. - However ! - as YOU seem to realize
to some extent. Perhaps it is time to REFOCUS, as such Depredations is Exactly were the
present trajectory is taking the USA. - As the FED's Policy of PRINTING TRILLIONS of U$D into
existence "Out Of Thin Air " to give to Billionaire Parasites, so that they can for-close or
buy-up YOUR Assets at .005 cents to a Dollar, when YOU can't make YOUR Mortgage Payments.
    A
nd YOUR Money & Pensions have suddenly taken on the consistency & strength of Toilet Paper

FROM DENMARK, A CLEVER WAY TO STOP PANIC-BUYING AND HOARDING:

A supermarket in Denmark got tired of people hoarding hand sanitizer, so came up with their own way of stopping it.

    1 bottle kr40 (€5.50)
    2 bottles kr1000 (€134.00) each bottle.

    Hoarding stopped!

There's a reason country after country has gone on lockdown over this: it puts a ridiculously high number of people in the hospital. Something like 10% of cases. The mortality rate is pretty bad as well (1-3%), but if all those people simply dropped dead, it wouldn't hit us so hard. But before they drop dead, they're going to be on ventilators for up to a week.

So, we have no immunity to this, no vaccine, and it's more infectious than the flu. The flu infects about 30 million Americans a year. Assume this infects 60 million. Losing 600,000 people is bad enough, but there's no way on Earth our system could handle 600,000 people needing an ICU and 6,000,000 needing hospital services. And 60 million is the low end of things. This could easily infect 100 million Americans.

While not strictly a call for censorship, this seems to be heading in that direction:
