    Great

    Tell it to pilots suffocating.
Or pilots in the heat of combat find their computer controls compromised.

Every war involving air to air combat has demonstrated the assumption
that technology can trump the need to dog fight is WRONG, WRONG, WRONG.

Who have "we" ever bombed into submission?

It was known when the USSR placed their sailors on their earliest Nuc. Submarines,
    the got leukemia.
I would wish to believe :flagus: values its' men in uniform better!

    STOP the F - 35 Raptor Boondoggle!

They've got all aspect short range AAM's and associated integrated sensors and display tech to remove the requirement for knife fights WVR.

But unlike the F-22 which Stealth abilities are in meantime questionable and where there are only 195 planes, the F-35 was to be done to be the "egg laying, wool-milk-sow" for Airforce, Navy and Marines to replace F-16, F-18 and AV-8 in majority. Such a "can do and all" plane did never work in history and will never work in future with pleasing result ... as shown again and again here as good example!

Lol ... who is against F-35 as this plane is / called to be and marked out the official confirmed problems this plane has, is then a communist. Funny! :)

It's not replacing those airframes, its replacing parts of the capabilities those airframes specialized in... with other weapon systems replacing other parts. When modernization occurs across the board it is called transformation... and then it redefines how individual components need to operate entirely into a new paradigm - unlike perhaps in Russia which is doing piecemeal upgrades in isolated areas such that its fragmented modernization but not actual real transformation. The F35 is designed to fulfill a role which integrates with other battle systems being fielded on the ground, sea, space and air - not 'replace F16, F18, AV8 etc etc'. It's about doing more with less... and hoping its unexpected vulnerabilities are covered by other systems - being out maneuvered by a clean F16 is not unexpected.

Sorry, but looking on the literature and articles about, F35 shall replace them … but this replacement is a fluid process. F35 shall do of course more as their predecessors and / or do otherwise as them, that’s true as you explained. But at least their predecessors will leave Service within the next “?” years and left over will be only F35 (+ maybe her successor then).
This means if those F16, F18 and AV8 reach their service life, they will be scrapped and the job will be done by F35 alone at least. In meantime the older planes do service shoulder by shoulder with new F35 together.
If we take now a look on the F18 Hornet / Super Hornet, this plane replaced over several years, several planes: F-4 Phantom II, A-7 Corsair II, A-6 Intruder and at least the F-14 Tomcat too. But Hornet / Super Hornet entered Service, when these older planes were still in Service … and looking now on all these Nimitz Class Carriers we have only them as fighter plane on board.
Same story with F16 in US Airforce (as well other countries using F16) area at least and the only exception is AV8, because no predecessor here.

I have still hard doubts that F35 will fulfill the job as for what she is constructed ... aside financial aspects. Looking on F22 this plane was introduced to replace F15 in fluid process too, but this is still over. Sure, F15 will leave over the next "?" years service with interim step to go more out of active Airforce service into US Air National Guard's service only ... but the origin telling for introduction of F22 is still put away, due to high costs and limited number in service.

Which is why the F-35 program was NOT the preferred option of any branch of the U.S. military but was forced on the military by Congress in order to "save money".

Indeed and that is the plague of (not only) US military in general over the last decades. Saving public money at purchasing and developing weapons for the military brought at NOTHING any reduction of costs. Reasons are many and differ in parts from case to case, but more important:

Often the expert knowledge of military of what they want is ignored by politics at least ... and this happened here too.
In combination with F35 I must still heavy smile with issue about these 2 new Royal Navy carries of Queen Elizabeth class and their many stories around. Because even production time of carriers was stretched heavy due to delay of getting F35, 1st of planned 2 carrier becomes ready far before F-35 is available for. So the biggest helicopter carriers in the world for the first. ;-)

In the article written about a trillion dollars. But perhaps you know the situation better, than the military experts and test pilot.

It amazes me how the average Americans thinks that the F35/22 are so advanced that others can't see it. Remember that WW2 era Radar caught the F117. Yes it was old tech compared to F22/35 but still. Russia is not Iraq, Lybia, Iran, Palestine. It for sure has means to shoot down the American Stealth planes.

And I never understood why it's called a fighter when it obviously cannot fight.
Do you guys believe that nothing can shoot these planes down?

    It's stealth not invisible.

Russia has SU-35/37 thats real fighters. Heck even the Mig29 SMT version is a good fighter by todays standards. A 5 generation doesn't necessarily mean that it must win over a Generation 4+ aircraft. It has it's advantages but for sure it's disadvantages also.

Should the time ever arise that the United States is again involved in air to air combat (extremely unlikely), we will find out how these planes fare....maybe. More likely should this ever actually happen any aircraft considered a threat will be downed long before they can act on it.

Before enemies had respect for their counterpart, when they act invincible then usually they fail.
Don't be so sure, Russia, China aint no Iraq, Afghanistan, they sure have something in their pipelines :)

Like I said, could SRJ Yugoslavia shoot down an F117 with their extremely old tech, than nothings impossible.
But like you said, we will know then.

And dogfight capabilities should never be put aside. It's only ignorant to produce a " figher airplane" and not have good dogfight capabilities.

Ok ... I understand what you mean :)
However ... any sort of Conquest in matter of "this plane is better as that plane" is at least useless ... no matter if US, Russian, European or whatever production. There are too much cases where hightech smashed lowtech as well where lower tech killed hightech utterly! There are too much other circumstances having an influence too.

Israeli use of cannon fire in air to air combat back in '67
is a great historical example of "low tech" America no longer used
    to American fighter pilots disadvantage.

And One Platform fits all has failed before.
    Remember McNamara.
Maybe they could rig an A-10 Warthog as a F-35 so as not loose a great, purposed weapon platform!&!

Which non-US fighter is a match for the F-35?

I'm not sure if any nation without better equipment is in a position to gloat about the supposed ineffectiveness of US technology. Just sayin.

It seems unlikely that The Best is already behind us, but we DO need to re-think our fighting gear and simplify it rather than over-think and over-complicate it. To an extent, and in this context, some wisdom seems to exist in the old maxim: "Less is more".

So then what is it that you think the F35 will not do as well which is not covered by other systems? If your only answer is fight a knife fight WVR then you'd be wrong. Since I've already pointed out the F35 does not need to win the knife fight to win the dogfight. I can think of one, buts its a redundant role as other systems are available to achieve the same effect - but I'm not in the business of writing your posts for you haha.

Sure, a dogfight is always a disputed issue to be necessary in modern air warfare, means this and that system makes superfluous because the fight will start in ranges where the enemy plane is even not in sight of the pilot. But to be honest, THIS was declared for many planes before F35 around the globe and fact was and is that it will always happen ... even for the F35.
There are too many very modern planes in the world aside F35 which have same long range fighting abilities as F35 have on one hand ... and on the other hand shows history of air warfare that these thinking were always dis-proofed by pure war practice.
But in core I have other critics for F35 and not the "missing / not necessary dogfight" dispute here... they are:

    a) The JSF suffer wrong defined development objectives! Here it is in core the critic of that F35 should be the “egg laying wool-milk-sow” in matter of can do and all. An air to ground mission needs other parameters as the rule to be an interceptor etc. … and so to fulfill all rules is at least always a compromise between all the necessary point.
    b) The F35 has too little internal fuel capacities and weapons stations and therefore could not be a substitute for ground attack aircraft. It means F-35 has only four small internal weapons positions. To expand the attack potential to the necessary things, additional external loads must be attached to the wings; thereby any STEALTH properties are over and gone … aside point that this has negative influence on the normal performance F35 has.
    c) The inability to long supersonic flights (Supercruise) makes the F-35 as an air defense platform less useful as other modern fighters … what means at least that F35 will “bite the dust” behind them. The low max. speed (Mach 1.6) limits the application range also considerably in comparison to other modern planes with this job too.
    d) The project is already suffering from a significant delay and therefore the budget has now blown up extremely. The cost for a single aircraft are simply far too high to justify the benefits.
    e) In addition to criticism of multiple systems, reliability and maintainability, the design of F35 is criticized by many pilots: the view from the cockpit is much worse than in most other aircraft, primarily to the rear. Aside “dogfight” issue, a good view is even for F35 without any doubts major important for ground attacks … a rule F35 shall play too!
    f) At F35C (STOVL) several significant technical problems were found which are based on construction differences to F35A and C. The STOVL variant needs weight saves for all these differences to the others and here several fatigues of the airframe were found. Further … even only a minor issue … the told heat blast is much higher as told before and out of this the deck of the Wasp class, as well of British Queen Elizabeth class is to weak now to take this blast heat.

Many other critics are known, for example to the pilot helmet and the design and the display shows wrong things. But these are minor problems in comparison to the plane itself and more easy to fix.

Well, let me answer this way:
US Forces had in all last conflicts they fought clear and full air superiority. This was due to fact that
    a) the enemies had no Airforce at all (Afghanistan)
    b) that their Airforce was weak and had an equipment 1 to 2 generations back to the US (Iraq) … when in majority older MIG & Co. planes which are opponents to still retired US planes were in use
    c) the enemy Airforce had from beginning on no desire to start Air fighting in knowledge to be the underdog (Serbia)

But this situation has changed drastic in meantime. Look who all is using same current US planes as USAF, Navy and Marines do too! Look who all is using the new European fighters as the Typhoon, the Rafale or Gripen. Aside this take a look on the new Russian developments which are … whyever … always underestimated in the West. The time when they were behind their Western opponents is over in meantime, because the technological advantage of the West in Electronic etc. is not existing anymore.
So … when F35 lost test fights against F18, F16 and F15, please note that these predecessors of F35 are not only in use in the US only … aside all the non US planes!
