Trump has been unable to get bond for $464 million judgment, his lawyers say

Former President Donald Trump has not been able to get a bond to secure the $464 million fraud judgment against him, his lawyers said in a court filing Monday.

Trump and his company need to post a bond for the full amount by next week in order to stop New York Attorney General Letitia James from being able to collect while he appeals. They've asked an appeals court to step in in the meantime and said Monday that they have not had any success getting a bond.

"Defendants’ ongoing diligent efforts have proven that a bond in the judgment’s full amount is 'a practical impossibility,'" the filing said. "These diligent efforts have included approaching about 30 surety companies through 4 separate brokers."

This would be a great time for E. Jean Carroll to sue his ass for defamation a third time.

Don has until March 25 to come up with the money. If he can't and the appeals court turns down his request to only pay $100M while he appeals the original verdict then Letitia James gets to start selling off his properties to pay the fine. Awesome.

Manafort in talks to return to Trump campaign for convention: Reports

Paul Manafort, former President Trump’s 2016 campaign chair who was jailed on fraud charges, is in talks to potentially return to Trump’s 2024 campaign ahead of the Republican National Convention in July, according to reports.

The Washington Post first reported Trump is expected to enlist Manafort as a campaign adviser this year, citing four people familiar with the matter. Trump pardoned Manafort in 2020 after he was convicted in 2018 on bank fraud and tax charges.

What We Know About Trump’s Failure to Arrange a Half-Billion-Dollar Bond

    What comes next?
Mr. Trump has appealed the $454 million judgment and asked a higher New York court either to pause it or to accept a lesser bond of $100 million. Ms. James could also grant additional time for Mr. Trump to pay or show mercy to the former president by offering a counterproposal.

He might appeal to the state’s highest court, quickly sell an asset or seek help from a wealthy supporter.

And if all else fails, as a last resort, he could have the corporate entities implicated in the fraud case file for bankruptcy, which would automatically halt the judgment against those entities.

    https://www.nytimes.com/2024/03/19/nyregion/trump-bond-ny-fraud-case.html

That would call for a celebration.

Behind Trump’s campaign cash crunch: Small-dollar donor fatigue, major donor hesitation

Donald Trump’s reelection campaign has begun to see warning signs that the small-dollar donors who fueled his last run for the White House have slowed their support to the former president this year, according to people familiar with the matter.

Since late last year, members of Trump’s team have been warned by Republican Party advisors that their small-dollar donor base could be shrinking, said the sources, who were granted anonymity to discuss internal campaign matters.

Some have even been told there may not be much that the former president or his campaign can do to win back these key donors, the sources explained.

The drop in Trump’s small-dollar contributors could be significant obstacle as the former president faces the well-funded incumbent president, Democrat Joe Biden.

    Falling behind Biden
Evidence from earlier in the 2024 election cycle already hinted at an erosion of Trump’s small-dollar donor base, or support of $200 or less.

AT THIS POINT, ANY HONORABLE CITIZEN SHOULD HOLD CONGRESS IN CONTEMPT: Ex-Trump adviser Peter Navarro reports to prison on contempt of Congress conviction.

'I want a GOP president and a GOP congress who will feed this stuff right back to the Democrats. I suppose the statute of limitations has run on Eric Holder’s contempt of congress, but . . .'

'And of course, despite what Judge Amit Mehta said, he is in fact the victim of a political persecution, and he’s not the only one. The perversion of the justice system — and the Department of Justice — is far advanced under this Administration.'

    Return it, double.

Trump Told Pence Certifying Election Would Be ‘Career Killer,’ Valet Testified

The threat from President Donald J. Trump to his vice president, Mike Pence, was clear and direct: If you defy my effort to overturn the 2020 election by certifying the results, your future in Republican politics is over.

“Mike, this is a political career killer if you do this,” Mr. Trump told Mr. Pence by phone on the morning of Jan. 6, 2021, according to the White House valet who was with the president for much of the day and told Congress he had overheard the conversation.

The testimony of Mr. Trump’s valet, provided to the now-defunct House Jan. 6 Committee in 2022 but not previously released publicly, offers a rare firsthand look into the former president’s behavior in the hours before, during and after a mob of his supporters stormed the Capitol seeking to halt the certification of President Biden’s victory.

Mike's career in POT politics was over long before that.

New York judge’s ruling on evidence couldn’t have gone worse for Trump

Four-time indicted former president Donald Trump suffered arguably his worst loss(es) in any criminal matter this week when, in his New York trial for alleged falsification of business records, Judge Juan M. Merchan ruled against him in virtually all of his motions to exclude evidence. By contrast, the judge largely granted Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s motions to exclude evidence for trial that Trump believed might be exculpatory. That does not bode well for Trump’s chances to avoid conviction when the case goes to trial, likely in a few weeks.

    So, good news.

Why Trump’s big Wall Street payday won’t bail him out of financial trouble

"Donald Trump is on the verge of gaining what could be a massive windfall from his social media company. But it will likely come too late to save him from the financial peril he’s facing now.

Investors on Friday are expected to sign off on a deal to allow Trump’s new venture, which operates Truth Social, to be publicly traded on Wall Street, clearing the way for a possible multibillion-dollar payday for the former president.

But Trump’s stake will be tied up for much of the year under a so-called lock-up agreement, a normal arrangement for such deals to ensure that insiders don’t bail as soon as a company goes public and push down the stock price.

Trump could try to obtain a waiver from that rule, but even then he wouldn’t be able to sell more than a small fraction of his stake at any given time — up to 1 percent of the outstanding shares every quarter. And if he eventually does unload a large quantity of stock, the ramifications could be significant, according to investors and others watching the deal. That’s because Trump himself is the heart of the venture, they say, and any sign that his interest is waning could chill investors.

Judge orders Trump company to tell financial watchdog about efforts to get appeal bonds

A judge ordered Donald Trump’s company Thursday to inform a court-appointed financial watchdog about any efforts to obtain an appeal bond.

Judge Arthur Engoron’s order came three days after Trump’s lawyers in an appeals court filing said it has been “impossible” so far for the former president to get such a bond for a civil business fraud case he lost.

Trump sought the bond to prevent New York Attorney General Letitia James as early as Monday collecting on a $454 million civil fraud judgment against him as he appeals the verdict in Manhattan Supreme Court.

His lawyers have said that more than 30 surety companies rejected writing a bond for Trump because they would not accept real estate as collateral.

Trump has asked the appeals court to pause the judgment from taking effect without having to secure a bond. That court has yet to rule on his request.

Remember when Trump said he would self fund his own campaign?

Trump hasn’t contributed any of his own money to his presidential campaigns since 2016. He had floated in 2020 that he’d personally spend what it took to win re-election, but did not do so.
Trump claims he has $500 million in cash, undercutting lawyers' claims on bond money
The former president must post the bond for the full amount he owes Monday or New York Attorney General Letitia James could try to seize his bank accounts or properties.
    [IMG] www.nbcnews.com

In 2016 he loaned $10.8M to his campaign, went on to solicit contributions, and then paid himself back for the $10.8M he put in.

As its stock collapsed, Trump’s firm gave him huge bonuses and paid for his jet
    https://www.washingtonpost.com/busi...458918-2766-11e6-b989-4e5479715b54_story.html

It was promoted as the chance of a lifetime: Mom-and-pop investors could buy shares in celebrity businessman Donald Trump’s first public company, Trump Hotels and Casino Resorts.
Their investments were quickly depleted. The company known by Trump’s initials, DJT, crumbled into a penny stock and filed for bankruptcy after less than a decade, costing shareholders millions of dollars, even as other casino companies soared.

In its short life, Trump the company greatly enriched Trump the businessman, paying to have his personal jet piloted and buying heaps of Trump-brand merchandise. Despite losing money every year under Trump’s leadership, the company paid Trump handsomely, including a $5 million bonus in the year the company’s stock plummeted 70 percent.

He's a genius, at taking other people's money.

Trump Seeks Again to Delay His Criminal Hush-Money Trial in Manhattan

Donald J. Trump is expected to appear in a Manhattan courtroom on Monday to seek another delay of his criminal trial on charges that he covered up a sex scandal that could have derailed his stunning victory in the 2016 presidential election.

The hearing to finalize a trial date, in what would be the first criminal prosecution of a former American president, will come as Mr. Trump is racing to stave off a financial crisis arising from a judgment in another case: a $454 million judgment in a civil fraud suit brought by New York’s attorney general.

The flurry of activity will unfold nearly a year to the day after the Manhattan district attorney’s office filed an indictment of Mr. Trump, accusing him of falsifying business records related to a hush-money deal with a porn star, Stormy Daniels.

    https://www.nytimes.com/2024/03/25/nyregion/trump-hush-money-trial-manhattan.html

Delay has supplanted "I'm innocent" as the primary legal strategy.

Trump’s Bond in Civil Fraud Case Is Reduced to $175 Million

With Donald J. Trump on the clock to secure a nearly half-billion-dollar bond in his civil fraud case, a New York appeals court handed the former president a lifeline on Monday, saying it would accept a far smaller bond of $175 million.

The ruling by a panel of five appellate court judges was a crucial and unexpected victory for Mr. Trump, potentially staving off a looming financial disaster. Had the court denied his request for a smaller bond in the fraud case, which was brought by the New York attorney general, Mr. Trump risked losing control over his bank accounts and even some of his marquee properties.

For now, those dire outcomes might be on hold. If Mr. Trump obtains the smaller bond, it will prevent the attorney general from collecting while he appeals the $454 million judgment against him. The appeal in the case, in which a trial judge found that Mr. Trump fraudulently inflated his net worth, could take months or longer to resolve.

Judge Keeps April 15 as Start of Trump Hush-Money Trial

Donald J. Trump’s Manhattan criminal trial on charges that he falsified business records to hide a potential sex scandal is scheduled to start on April 15 after a judge on Monday denied the former president’s attempts to delay it further.

For roughly an hour on Monday morning, the judge, Juan M. Merchan, slammed arguments from Mr. Trump’s lawyers that his case should be pushed back any further because of newly disclosed documents from a related federal investigation.

    https://www.nytimes.com/live/2024/03/25/nyregion/trump-hush-money-trial

I write quite often about the danger of normalizing Trump's behavior. I bring this up now because once again, prior to the hush money trial, the judge has issued a gag order on Trump. This, based on past and present acts. We need to continue to remind ourselves how abnormal it is for a former president, who is also and aspiring president, to force multiple judges into issuing gag orders because of Don's inflammatory attacks.

How Trump Moved Money to Pay $100 Million in Legal Bills

Since leaving office in 2021, former President Donald J. Trump has spent more than $100 million on lawyers and other costs related to fending off various investigations, indictments and his coming criminal trials, according to a New York Times review of federal records.

The remarkable sum means that Mr. Trump has averaged more than $90,000 a day in legal-related costs for more than three years — none of it paid for with his own money.

Instead, the former president has relied almost entirely on donations made in an attempt to fight the results of the 2020 election.

Now, those accounts are nearly drained, and Mr. Trump faces a choice: begin to pay his own substantial legal fees or find another way to finance them.

    https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2024/03/27/us/politics/trump-cases-legal-fund.html

    $90K a day. Unbelievable.

John Eastman, architect of Trump’s 2020 election plot, should be disbarred, judge rules

A California judge on Wednesday recommended the disbarment of John Eastman, calling to revoke the law license of one of former President Donald Trump’s top allies in his failed last-ditch gambit to subvert the 2020 election.

Judge Yvette Roland, who presided over months of testimony and argument about the basis of Eastman’s fringe legal theories, ruled that the veteran conservative attorney violated ethics rules — and even potentially criminal law — when he advanced Trump’s efforts to overturn the election results based on weak or discredited claims of fraud.

Eastman plans to appeal Roland’s decision to a panel of judges, an interim step before the matter reaches the state Supreme Court. But while his appeal is pending, the ruling forces his law license into “inactive” status, meaning he can no longer practice law in California.

Pro-Trump fake electors in Arizona have pleaded the Fifth before grand jury

Arizona Republicans who falsely posed as electors for Donald Trump in 2020 have appeared before a grand jury in recent days and invoked their Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination, as state prosecutors near a decision on potential criminal charges against those who helped Trump try to overturn his loss in the state.

The prosecutors’ decision to require these people to appear in person is the latest escalation of the long-running probe by the state’s attorney general, Kris Mayes, into election interference by Trump allies. The tactic is also highly unusual and risks biasing the grand jury against key targets of the probe, according to independent legal experts who have worked as both prosecutors and defense lawyers.

Trump Media shares fall sharply after company reports net loss of $58 million in 2023

The share price of Trump Media fell sharply Monday morning after the social media app company closely tied to former president Donald Trump reported a net loss of $58.2 million on revenue of just $4.1 million in 2023.

Trump Media & Technology Group shares trading down by more than 14.5% as of 11 a.m. ET.

Despite that plunge, the company’s market capitalization was still more than $6 billion after its 8-K filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission revealed the loss for last year.

Much of the net loss appears to come from $39.4 million in interest expense, according to the filing.

A spokesperson for the company did not immediately reply to a request for comment on the new filing.

    https://www.cnbc.com/2024/04/01/trump-media-lost-58-million-last-year-sec-filing-shows.html

A $6B market cap for a company with those losses and no prospect of future profit is a joke. That joke being on the bagholders who own the stock.

'Reprehensible': Hush money prosecutor demands stricter gag order against Trump

The prosecutor in former President Donald Trump's criminal hush money case Monday demanded a stricter gag order to clamp down on his "dangerous, violent, and reprehensible rhetoric," court records show.

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg filed his motion to New York City Justice Juan Merchan, whose daughter has been the subject of repeated attacks from Trump on his social media site Truth Social, according to court records.

"[Trump's] dangerous, violent, and reprehensible rhetoric fundamentally threatens the integrity of these proceedings and is intended to intimidate witnesses and trial participants alike—including this Court," Bragg wrote.

    https://www.rawstory.com/trump-gag-order-2667648264/

Once again he is baiting the court in to acting. Merchan really needs to do so. Issue a new gag order and if it is violated throw Trump's fat ass in jail.
