This is, imo, an absolutely crazy development - small nukes in the range of 5 kilotons - that clearly are designed to be "usable" in confrontational situations are now coming off the assembly line and into service with US Navy subs.

The crazies now run the asylum.

Lack of specificity is weakness of argument.
These are 'tactical' nukes. Russia has thousands of them.

The very first line of your posted article says: "Last month, the National Nuclear Security Administration (formerly the Atomic Energy Commission) announced..."

No such announcement was made by the NNSA.

The W76-0 was first introduced in 1976. They have been refurbished over the last 20 years to meet new operational standards, and re-badged W76-1. I cannot find any credible source saying that new W76 weapons are being produced.... The existing W76's service life has been extended from 20 to 60 years. Your article is all 100% BS and propaganda.

American nukes are "dangerous" to the Western Left.
When the Soviets installed the short-range SS-20 against
Europe and NATO there was ZERO PROTEST. The
American response, the Pershing and Cruise missiles,
cause an apoplexy of Rage by the "peace movement"
Why were American missiles dangerous and Soviet
ones not? Because they were dangerous to the Soviet
Union, or China, or North Korea, or Iran, or Cuba. These
nations are the Friends of the Left.

Okay...except tactical nuclear weapons with low kiloton or even sub-kiloton yields have existed for decades.

Don't worry. If you dislike small nukes, we're also making our nukes larger and more powerful.

"Sustain and modernize the U.S. nuclear weapons stockpile with five programs currently underway (W76-2 Modification Program, B61-12 Life Extension Program, W80-4 Life Extension Program, W88 Alteration 370, and W87-1 Modification Program)"

I love American nukes. We may be destroyed in a war, but whoever attacks will be vaporized a thousand times over.

Tactical Nukes are the logical next step and are not really new. Placing them on a Sub is also a logical step in that intimidation and fear are drastically increased due to stealth and simply not knowing what retaliation will be if you decide to be a dlck. I imagine Putin is rethinking his little hypersonic program right about now.

Heh, a more 'usable' weapon is more of a deterrent than a less 'usable' weapon. If the rest of the world thinks we wouldn't risk the collateral damage of using our big nukes (and they're right), then they don't count for much beyond MAD. If they think we might use a smaller one, we can leverage that belief to reduce the likelihood that we'll have to actually use it.

It'd be nice if we could un-invent nukes, but we can't. This is the alternative.

What I'd be concerned about, these smaller ones have a lot more radioactive fallout relative to the amount of damage they can actually cause. There's a trade-off and smaller means less efficient, which means more radioactive fallout leftover (even though there is less fallout overall in absolute terms because the size is smaller).

Keep in mind that we probably will not be deploying very many of these low-yield SLBM warheads. I'll be surprised if we deploy any more than one per sub.

If we need to use a level of force that would require "lots and lots" of small nukes, we'll just break out the bigger nukes. We're not pursuing a warplan that would involve the mass use of low-yield warheads.

This is also supposed to just be a temporary measure until we can build and deploy a new fleet of sea-launched cruise missiles (which I presume will use the 5kt/150kt dual-yield W-80), at which point I think the plan is to restore these SLBM warheads back to their full yield.

Not nonsense. What he said is accurate.

The hypocritical protesters were European mostly. Although the American left certainly shared the hope for the west to be destroyed.

Why would you think protesters would need to travel to Russia or Cuba in order to protest Russian and Cuban actions?

It is more "the left are friends with evil dictators" than "evil dictators are friends with the left".

These evil dictators don't care about the left, and merely see leftists as tools to use against democracy.

But other than that it is perfectly correct. Leftists hate democracy and will do anything to support evil dictators.

Facts are inconvenient to the left, but it's not accurate to characterize facts as idiocy or nonsense or ignorance.

Why is this even under "Music, TV, Movies, and other media"?

Let alone that it is garbage and is about as real as a James Bond movie.

Exactly that was done during Desert Storm.

It's why Saddam didn't use chemical weapons.
