When did the taxpayers of the United States sign up to provide healthcare for everybody in the world?! The world has 7.8 BILLION people in in it, Monster... and we have PLENTY of problems just trying to provide handout welfare and free medical care for our own population of 330 million. We're already $22,000,000,000,000 in DEBT, and it grows higher every hour.

Here's a suggestion -- you and your fellow bleeding-heart liberals 'pass the collection plate' and pay for the healthcare needs of the whole Third World YOURSELVES!

Children are "law-breakers"? Do you think the kids who are brought here have a choice in the matter? They seem more like victims to me.

Aren't we talking about children in U.S. custody?

So you want government policy to be set by the Bible?

Oh FFS! What desert crossing? Are you really that uninformed? These critically ill children mostly came here by air. Their parents have broken no laws. They applied for and were granted deferments under this program.

Like so many righties, you need better news sources, because Fox and Breitbart and Rush and the other right wing echo chambers are lying to you. Daily.

Donations, dude. They run those special children's hospitals on donations. I donate to St. Jude's every year. You'd better not donate, though, because I'm guessing that you wouldn't want your money going to save the life of an immigrant child.

Sorry, you'll have to explain to me your conclusion that I'm heartless unless I saved a kid from Sierra Leone. That was rude, snarky, smug, and un-called for. Is Sierra Leone of special interest to you?

This isn't about countries not taking care of their people. We're fortunate to live in a country with rich resources, high education, and an economy that allows us the time for inventivesness. For many countries, the resources are not plentiful, the economies are a disaster, and their people spend their time just surviving.

If you're expecting people like me to solve ALL of the problems of the world, you'll be perpetually disappointed. The best anyone can do is help when they can, and do their best to not be part of the problem.

I get that we need to do more for our own, but that doesn't mean we can't help critically ill or injured children from other countries. Their care comes from donations, not your bank account.

Helping isn't helping when we're forced to pay for foreign citizens health care. That's theft.

    Socialism is not philanthropy.

First, what gives you the idea that any of these critically ill or injured children came across our southern border? Most arrived via airplane, often accompanied by medical equipment like IV drips and oxygen tanks they received from an NGO in order to survive the trip. Few if any just showed up a a children's hospital unannounced. Arrangements are almost always made in advance through the generous donations and hard work of organizations like Doctors Without Borders (another organization I donate to every year). Applications for the deferred status are filled out in advance and filed with the proper agency. This is not a slap-dash operation.

And no, I would not exclude any sick children from any country.

If they came by air, they likely came from a shithole country under Obama's immigration policies..

This medical care is not socialism.

Anyone who thinks it is does not have a clue as to what is going on.

First, I didn't say southern border, I said border, which is a factor no matter how you enter the country.

Second, the article didn't mention "most arrived via airplane, often accompanied by medical equipment like IV drips and oxygen tanks they received from an NGO in order to survive the trip." If you have any statistics on the the number who come in this way instead of just showing up at the hospital, I would be curious, but then, it wasn't in the story.

Third, your comment, "arrangements are almost always made in advance through the generous donations and hard work of organizations like Doctors Without Borders..." If that's the case, than these are not “medical deferred action” cases at all. “Medical deferred action” is a special status to allow patients from being deported, not arriving here in the first place. Also, anyone coming in via an NGO I would assume they would be paying the costs, not going on Medicaid, which is part of the deferred action.

Conclusion: You don't really know what you're talking about. You're confusing medically deferred action (the actual topic of this OP and of the news story) with NGO's or church groups financing medical treatment for sick kids by bringing them to the US, not putting them on Medicaid.

I appreciate that you care about sick kids and donate to worthwhile organizations, but your posts in this thread are a good example of why leftists shouldn't be dictating policy. You just don't understand it.

They were so sick that their parents dragged them across the border anyway?

Yes. Other people are paying, through donations. I already explained that, but you're too full of fear and hate to grasp the concept.

You've been told over and over that these small brown Catholic people are evil, criminal, rapists and murderers and drug dealers. You've been told this so often in the right wing echo chambers you frequent that you can longer even imagine that none of those things are true. Pathetic.

The childrens hospital in Boston, as well as many other childrens' hospitals such as those associated with Shriners or St. Judes, do not require payment, period. They do not bill insurance companies, they do not charge the medicaid program. They run on grants and donations. These sick children are not costing YOU a freaking dime.
