The governor of the U.S. Virgin Islands has ordered the territory's national guard to begin seizing guns and ammunition from citizens in preparation for Hurricane Irma's landfall.

In an executive order signed Monday, Gov. Kenneth Mapp instructed Adjutant General Deborah Howell "to take whatever actions she considers necessary to carry out the assigned mission" of maintaining and restoring public order.

"The Adjutant General is authorized and directed to seize arms, ammunition, explosives, incendiary material and any other property that may be required by the military forces for the performance of this emergency mission," the governor said in the order.

The order went into effect Tuesday at 12:01 a.m.

    ==============================================================

They are coming right after the guns in the very first order. The government is never supposed to have this right. I wonder why so many people anymore refuse to register their guns? Not, really, this is the reason why.

After Hurricane Katrina hit, they started going through their records and seizing guns from all those on their list.

I think it is smart not to share your information with the government when it comes to your arms.

The USVI has universal registration of firearms.

Article doesnt mention is this was part of an order for martial law in preparation for Irma. An order or martial law wpuld be appropriate and Im surprised it doesnt happen more often. Probably cause it would be political suicide.

Its our territory but not part of the US and plus its a little island.

They can do things the way they think is appropriate for them.

The government could never do that in that US however.

We aren't an island, we have over 300 million guns in circulation.

Now do the math and figure out how many people you would need to confiscate that many guns.

Maybe if we are under martial law for the next 50 years they might get them all.

Martial law can be declared in isolated areas. It was declared in New Orleans after Katrina. Not sure why you think it has to be the entire country.

Ir would juat be a limited area, such as Houston and surrounding counties. It wont happen though because it would be political suicide.

Because that was the point I was making.

I'm fully aware that localized areas can do it but it can never be nationwide like in the Virgin Islands.

Actually, the government has already done that. Go to YouTube and search for Katrina firearm seizures.

^^^ Nailed it. That is what they used for Katrina to go from house to house seizing guns. People were left defenseless.

The governor is being responsible, far more than Gov Abbott has. They want to avoid a hysterical and apprehensive and potentially deadly situation.

Why do you object to that ?

Because the Citizens of the United States have a right to protect themselves. Why are you against that?

Maybe because I don't wanna see a bunch of dead bodies in the streets when these people begin going paranoid.

Because how do they know where the criminals are stashing weapons? What can happen is that they seize guns and ammo from citizens so after the storm, the criminals can have a free-for-all with crime and looting while everyone else is left defenseless to stop it.

It is an order that would not survive a court challenge even in the Virgin Islands. It will have repercussions because the order is not only to seize firearms but also ANY other property that may be required by the military forces for the performance of this emergency mission.

This sounds like marshal law without declaring it. Probably not legal but it appears that their constitution was rejected in 2012 by the Obama administration *

It also does not appear that they are protected by US homeland security laws enacted after Katrina that ban the confiscation of guns.

I hope they know enough to claim their guns and generators were lost in a boating accident or they are probably screwed, Thanks Obama.

    * They were sold to the United States by Denmark in the Treaty of the Danish West Indies of 1916. They are classified by the U.N. as a Non-Self-Governing Territory, and are currently an organized, unincorporated United States territory. The U.S. Virgin Islands are organized under the 1954 Revised Organic Act of the Virgin Islands and have since held five constitutional conventions. The last and only proposed Constitution, adopted by the Fifth Constitutional Convention of the U.S. Virgin Islands in 2009, was rejected by the U.S. Congress in 2010, which urged the convention to reconvene to address the concerns Congress and the Obama Administration had with the proposed document. The Fifth Constitutional Convention of the U.S. Virgin Islands met in October 2012 to address these concerns, but was not able to produce a revised Constitution before its October 31 deadline.

The rights of the people there are protected by the Constitution in exactly the same way yours are.
If they cannot do it here - as you say - they cannot do it there.
