IMO the base commander should be replaced for being stupid. His error was in turning over the material to the locals for disposal. That's like giving the enemy your code books to shred. The books weren't accidently burned; they were intended to have been burned. There's nothing wrong with that except the fool gave the job to the locals instead of having his own troops do it in a secure location.
One simply cannot 'Intentionally' do anything through ignorance. I do not advocate insensitivity but also do not get indignant over religious insensitivity toward the one religion in the world that routinely responds to insensitivity with violence. I'd love to see your evidence of Muslims burning bibles. True the flags and effigies are routinely burned but I have still to see a bible being burned so provide some evidence.
Well to be accurate Judaism was a threat to world peace centuries before Islam came along. Their genocides against peaceful people are recorded in the Bible. They've been at it for thousands of years. Christians and muslims are relatively newcomers but Christians have been a lot worse than muslims, who have definitely been bad. Now the Mongols were the Alpha dogs, they kicked everyone's behinds. BTW, don't forget that the Jews collaborated with the muslims against the Christians for over 780 years in Spain.
Outside of a mistake being made, shouldn't the ONLY issue be 1000s of people gathering in order to kill people over burning some books? Its not about us burning the books. Its about the PEOPLE willing to kill over them. How screwed up is that in this day and age? How about we firebomb the whole country over them burning our flag on a daily basis? But that would be considered insane, wouldn't it?
It doesn't work unless you demolish the country first and make the inhabitants totally dependent on you for their next bowl of mutton chowder. At least that's the lesson I've learned from the past 70 years of U.S. history. Forget the hearts and minds and start working on the stomachs.

That is the point. We respond to Islamic violence over what is simply blasphemy in a manner different than we respond to blasphemy against any other religion. The reason? Only one faith responds to every slight with over the top violence.

It's religion, logic does not apply. They have faith, blind faith. Logic does not play any part of the decision making and the US troops should have understood that they should not even touch the bleeding book, let alone burn it.
