The Arctic - a territory of Russia. And the United States have to put up with this. By the way. What the flight time for rockets, for example, "Topol M" or "Bulava" from Arctic, for example, in Washington?

What do you think about this?

Yea, they have actually trained up a pretty good sized force to specifically operate in the Arctic.

It appears they really have an interest in that area.

Operation Christmas Surprise, the Russians will invade SantaClausistan and end Christmas for Americans! First step, after which they will invade Turkey to end Thanksgiving.

I believe the rocket flight time from arctic to Washington is right around the beginning of the end of Russias existence, give or take a few minutes. BTW, nice looking ice-breaker.

Good. When global warming ruins the arctic, we can blame Russia.

This is a giant "so what". We have all of the Arctic we want. If we wanted more, we'd have it.

The US strategy is to melt the arctic with global warming. All those ice breakers will look pretty silly then! :)

Actually that's not even so inaccurate. The ice sheet has be retreating away from Alaska for some time now. While we used to need icebreakers for a number of towns, I don't know if that's even the case anymore. Overland and areal transport routes have been improving as well, reducing the need for icebreaking.

If either side wants to launch any missiles, we both already have subs under that ice.

    So what?

The National Geological Survey estimates that 22% of the worlds oil and natural gas lies under the Arctic.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natural_resources_of_the_Arctic

    Yea, who cares.

Global warming is opening up accessibility to petroleum and other resources. The same thing will occur in Antarctica. Countries will be disputing territorial rights to these resources. Regarding the Arctic, this involves Canada, Denmark, Norway, Russia and U.S.

China is making a move on Antarctica.

Yes, we're falling behind in terms of ice breakers and the military infrastructure necessary to support a conflict in these areas.

However...China will be running out of fresh water by 2030...I believe the next conflict will be over fresh water not oil and gas.

    No it won't.

We can build desalination plants to provide as much water as we need. Saudi Arabia currently gets 70% of their water from them. Actually, Saudi Arabia is the worlds leader in showing how to not only create, but control water. Almost every flash flood they have is diverted to dams, they are close to recycling 40% of the water they use......they are really experts at this.

Sweet! More targets for the U.S. Submarines. The older but reliable Los Angles class, the amazing Sea Wolf class and the new state-of-the-art Virginia class boats will have a lot of fun littering the bottom of the Arctic Ocean with these pieces of Russian junk.

And a Trident II(or a Tomahawk) will reach Moscow just as fast as anything else can get to Washington.

Considering that a vast amount of Russian territory borders the Arctic, even a moron can figure out they have vested interest in that region. Mr. " US Coast Guard Commandant" is either a fugitive from a brain camp or he is the incarnation of Captain Obvious.

And we have all of it we want or we would have taken it. The Russians are under no obligation to GRANT it to us.

I said China will running be running out of fresh water by 2030, a nation of 1.3 billion...What does that have to with Saudi Arabia?

also I suggest being enlightened on the potential for future water wars.

China, Egypt and Pakistan are just a few countries facing critical water issues in the 21st century.

Consider what will happen in water-distressed, nuclear-armed, terrorist-besieged, overpopulated, heavily irrigation dependent and already politically unstable Pakistan when its single water lifeline, the Indus river, loses a third of its flow from the disappearance from its glacial water source

20 percent of humanity lacks access to sufficient clean freshwater for drinking and cooking and 40 percent to adequate sanitation.

That's 1 in 5 people on the planet.

Desperate times call for desperate measures...the next conflict will involve water. I'm not backing down from this statement.

A nation can never have enough natural resources. With natural resources comes security and power and wealth. Imagine getting those resources and paying off the debt?

You have to think of benefits beyond simple usage.

How did you miss my point?

Nations can make all of the water they want. Why go to war and spend far more money rather than building a desalination plant instead?

California is already building 17 of them along the coast. Costing everywhere from 400 million to 1 billion, the largest one can produce 50 million gallons of fresh water every day. For the cost of the Iraq War we could have provided most of the nation with fresh water.

So why is China going to war again?
