I read an article on Fox News about the "Race to Mars". It talked about how Countries...China for example looks to land on Mars as soon as 2013. This isn't going to happen, and I hope the Chinese know this isn't going to happen. I disagree with Obama on rather or not we should develop the moon first, then go to Mars. I guess he has the JFK "American must lead the way" mentality. Either way, I doubt any country is capable of landing people on Mars, and brining then back.

However...if every developed country on Earth pulled together, and did this together, we would develop Mars in literally a decade. I have no doubt in my mind.

This applies to almost everything and every problem we face. The economy would literally never bust, because...how could it? Shipping jobs overseas...why? We develop every country so they can function like our states do, and when necessary, get assistance from wherever the World Capital would be.

Nobody is saying this would be Utopia, because there would be issues, no doubt, but I've always thought the more borders, the more uncivilized the people were. The Idea of countries was awesome in the 11th century, but at this point, we should become Humans first.

This going to have to happen eventually...don't you think?

First, let's be clear. "World Government" usually refers to THIS world, meaning Earth, and not another one.

Now that we have that settled, I think the idea of people going to Mars or to the Moon to live is ridiculous, but if all of the Socialists in THIS world want to go live on Mars together, then so be it.

A true world government probably won't happen in our life times. There may be regional colonialists like the European Union, The African Union etc., however, the economic and social needs for each country and region can be vastly different.

I was just using going to Mars as an example of what a world government could do as opposed to individual Countries....so.....yeah..

We'll have to wait for "Western Civilisation" to develop.

Which is why devolved countries can help develop other countries to become self efficient. You could name capitals to a region, and it help aids that areas region. The United States would be the capital of this continent, Ghana would be the capital of West Africa etc etc.

I can think of good reasons for and against. I agree that none of us will live long enough to ever see it. But in a word, inevitable.

Only if whoever is seeking to govern the entire planet uses inhumane force on a global level never before seen and maintains it in perpetuity is it "inevitable".

Humans have an instinctual tribalist need. You will never get even half the world's population to give up their personal tribal soveriegnty and join a world government. Ever.

That depends on whether or not globalization kicks in. Most countries have already seceded their language and English has become the lingua franca of the world. It may take a couple of hundred years, but I think globalization will eventually homogenize the world into one culture and at that point why would anyone care about whose stretch of land is better?

This vests way too much power into one government. Corruption arises in much less powerful governments. Corruption would be rampant in a world government. Also the culture of people varies way too much around the world. We have state governments in the U.S. because of various cultures and needs in the different states. This is just in one country, let alone the entire world.

This puts way too much power into one government. Corruption is prevalent in governments that have far less power. What is going to stop corruption from existing in the most powerful government that the world has ever seen? Also there are too many cultures in the world. We have state governments to adjust to the particular needs and cultures in each state. This is just in one country, let alone in the whole world.

Great idea let's centralized all currency precious medals and hire a single point of contact CEO with multiple coordinators. Let's also create a central database to ensure everyone is trackable as a asset via gps with a kill switch just in case. Also let's create robots to streamline the process and last but not least let's become freemadons.

Racial and religious integration with religious extremists and savages is not good. I'm a nationalist.

Buckminster Fuller (rip) wrote a most provactive book entiled "Operating Manual for the Space Ship Earth".

I would love to see a planetary government that whos mandate focused solely global issues. Leave national/regional/local governments intact.,

I think human civilization would benefit from centralized resource and evironmental management. A planetary bill of human/civil rights.
A planetary judical system with clearly defined boundries of jursidiction but with the power to enforce rulings in national disputes etc.
It would involve itself with planetary energy needs and issues, regulate and direct all deep space/system exploration and regulate near earth space for private and national enterprise. It would develop planetary professional education standards so doctors, engineers, scientists, etc would be recognized in all jurisdications and set high quality planetary education standards for all national education progams. It would co-ordinate disaster/famine relief and truly eliminate hunger. It would create institutes to co-ordinate and/or analyze global manufacturing patterns, transportation needs and patterns, etc with a view to recommending ways of optimizing efficiencies and safeguarding dependencies.

Leave the individual national to deal with their own populations as they do know, with the acknowledgement that Planetary law supercedes national law.

There would have to be iron clad checks and balances to ensure that the boundries of planetary governance were maintained along with stringent anti-corruption laws.

only half baked, but seems to me we could benefit as a species and a civilization if we could figure it out.

Global government? Right after hunmanity becomes omniscient and omnipresent in which case no government would be needed.

There is no individual or group of individuals smart enough let alone knowledgeable enough to effectvely run the world. In fact any indvidual or group of individuals who believes he or they has or have the capacity to effectively run an entire planet probably is to insane to be allowed with in a parsec or so of the Job.

world government is a dream of conquest, not of cooperation. it was the dream of european nations as they colonized around the globe and most of those countries paid a high price for their arrogance. take a good look at the individual nations as they stand today. each one, with very few exceptions, is filled with disagreements, if not outright warfare, between differing internal parties. now imagine expanding those disagreements across the globe, across widely differing philosophies and mindsets. the needs of the people in different regions will always vary and centralized control will never take that into account. the consolidation of power must eventually lead to abuse on a global scale by those who are attracted to that power.

the notion of some benevolent world government is a naive pipe dream. it demands an altruism that simply doesn't exist within our species.

I disagree with the USA surrendering her soverignty to a global government. However, I think the world would be a better place if every nation on Earth became a state or territory of the US. And I don't think the colonization of Mars is ridiculous

i don't even think the centralized control in the u.s. is a good idea. the concept of loosely affiliated sovereign states or regions has far more merit. such a system leaves less likelihood of corruption on a massive scale and reduces the ability of our leaders to "pass over" regions that might not be in favor with the current regime.

It's kinda what the UN and IMF are all about.
It's inevitable. But decades(many many) away from happening. But IMO, that is the end goal.

Even if there were a world government, it wouldn't be a world government that would actually get people to Mars, it would be the same handful of spacefaring nations. I don't see Haiti making a big contribution to the effort. And probably more important, Haiti may think they have other priorities that are more important than a trip to Mars; I dunno, potable water maybe?

As far as the rest of your assumptions go, I totally don't get how you think the economy won't ever go bust.

No. We reach a limit to where government is too efficient to govern well. Our federal government, IMHO, is nearing that point (if it hasn't passed it).
