The funny thing is Marijuana hasnt even been seen as a negative thing in this country until the early 1900s. It somehow got linked to Immigrants and then "research" linked marijuana use to violence, crime, and other behaviors and by 1931 29 states had outlawed it. In 1944 a report came out that disproved all of the previously mentioned things. During WW2 the Government encouraged farmers to grow hemp and by 1943 American farmers registered in the program harvested 375,000 acres of hemp which were used for military purposes.

If you look at it historically it was just a big smear campaign against it that took a long long time for people to finally come around to again.

Great job in stating the basics in terms of causality RE: Cannabis Prohibition.

Let's not forget Mr. Hust's angst regarding this plant.

But cigarettes and alcohol are better? Let people make their own life choices. The War on Drugs has been a colossal failure, there is no point in criminalizing victimless actions.

The 30 some odd states that have some form of legalization should petition the Federal Government to BACK OFF and not interfere with their state laws and then instruct their congress persons to pass laws vacating any federal laws governing marijuana. Until Congress acts...........

I think some of these quotes by Harry Anslinger about say it all. He was the Director of the Federal Bureau of Narcotics in 1930

“There are 100,000 total marijuana smokers in the US, and most are Negroes, Hispanics, Filipinos, and entertainers. Their Satanic music, jazz, and swing, result from marijuana use. This marijuana causes white women to seek sexual relations with Negroes, entertainers, and any others.”

“…the primary reason to outlaw marijuana is its effect on the degenerate races.”

“Marijuana is an addictive drug which produces in its users insanity, criminality, and death.”

“Reefer makes darkies think they’re as good as white men.”

“Marijuana leads to pacifism and communist brainwashing”

“You smoke a joint and you’re likely to kill your brother.”

“Marijuana is the most violence-causing drug in the history of mankind.”

So red states have the right to blindly discriminate against transgender students, but blue states can't end an embarrassing crusade against a personal choice that evidence shows isn't even that bad? Trump and the Republican Party as a whole have such a backward view when it comes to the power of the states.

    Huh?

The Trump Administration has left toilet duty up to the States.

The Trump Administration, to date, has said that they are sympathetic to medicinal users, but are not pro-recreational use...
    THAT is ALL.

No hunting down/prosecution of anyone...again, to date.

Chill. Pack one, & ride out a few more months.

Hell, it's not even been 40 days yet.

I would say a Federal Tax on Marijuana is in order.

How 'bout putting safeguards in first?

Like accurate testing so that when someone gets pulled over who appears impaired can't whine that (because of the testing we have now) it was three weeks ago when they smoked their last joint?

Do you believe that, by legalizing drugs, the cartels are just going to throw up their arms and say, "Alright! You win! Now we'll just go out and get regular jobs."?

They might move to boot legged cd's but if America's private industry ever gets behind legalized drugs, there's nothing the cartels could make that could compete with that level of quality. Only way for them to survive in the drug trade would be to buy America's product and move it around the world.

We are not talking about legalizing drugs, just cannabis. The cartels will likely focus on hard drugs like methamphetamine, heroin, etc. Drugs that actually ruin lives instead of just help them relax or aid in the discomfort that comes with terminal illnesses.

There is no justifiable reasoning behind arresting someone for the consumption or the possession of this plant - it has been deemed less dangerous to the individual and society than tobacco and alcohol with long term effects being negligible for users past 25 years old. If you use and drive, go to jail.

What reason is there for marijuana to be a schedule 1 (no medical use authorized) substance?

It should not be a federal issue, outside of interstate travel. That is the point.

    http://www.latimes.com/politics/la-na-pol-trump-marijuana-20170223-story.html (my emphasis)
    Evan Halper and Patrick McGreevy

The White House on Thursday put states that have legalized recreational-use marijuana on notice that federal law enforcement agents could be targeting them soon.

It was the clearest warning yet that the Trump administration may move to disrupt the marijuana trade in the eight states, including California, that have legalized the recreational use of pot.

White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer told reporters that the administration had no plans to continue the permissive approach of the Obama administration and that it viewed recreational marijuana use as a flagrant violation of federal law.

Except for a few moonshiners, re-legalizing alcohol did eliminate large segments of criminal activity. Most of the violence associated with the illegal alcohol trade disappeared almost overnight.

I disagree. It is a Federal issue because marijuana is on Schedule I on the Federal list of "controlled substances". This is exactly what the Trump Administration is going to use to go after States that have legalized is recreational use.

Yes, but it is one of the most spectacular and profitable failures for the various enforcement bureaucracies. Great jobs in the DEA and the Bureau of Prisons, and large and ever growing budgets for all involved agencies.

What part of the Federal Constitution empowers the government to be involved in what the citizens put into their bodies?

Considering that our government puts rat poison in our water (fluoride) and poison in cigarettes (carpet glue, fire safe) and The whole Tuskegee syphilis experiments thing. Why would they allow something that has true healing powers like marijuana?
They allow all kinds of poisons from the aluminum in food coloring to gmo's in food. Marijuana helps stop the aluminum intake from causing dementia. It's the most popular drug for self medicating bi-polar patients. Much better then the comatose meds they give out. Bi-polar meds have caused young boys to grow breasts.
Marijuana causes more problems for the Healthcare moguls then any other healing medicine available. They can't price gauge like they can with the TB skin test, epi pens, and narcan, opioid pain killers etc....

Someone gets it. This is all about redistribution of wealth from the middle class to the ruling class.
