True, but that isn't what is important to the party of trump. To them, the positive aspect of this news story isn't the possibility of saving money, it is the opportunity to unfairly target the Latino community without appearing to be blatantly racist. 2020 is right around the corner and they can't be upsetting potential republican voters.

you can come from almost any country on earth, make your applications, and earn the privilege of entering the freest, fairest, most prosperous nation the world has ever known. and you are most welcome as we are a nation of immigrants. white, black, brown, olive, tan, slightly-pinkinsh, yellow, green, it does not matter. and you may speak any language you wish. however, to participate in civic life, to assimilate into our great society, and to live the american dream, you need to learn english (as millions of immigrants have done before you for two centuries). hence, all official business of the state is conducted in english. and all official public acts and records should be in english and only in english. election ballots, dmv manuals, irs publications, anything printed by the government, any words spoken by the government, any instruction in a public school... ENGLISH.

 

where is it even implied that you have a right to be spoken to in your native tongue in a foreign country? my husband and i have been to europe and asia. we bought phrase books so we could communicate with local people instead of demanding they speak our language. what kind of person goes to a foreign country and demands the locals conform to their ways? imperialists... invaders... that's who.

 

Unless and until you make it a law for official business to be conducted in English, no, you can't say that it all "should be" in English. You are, of course, entitled to your opinion, but personally I don't see a justification for your opinion on the matter.

I might even point out that being multilingual is good for the brain. So if you ask me, all Americans should learn at least one additional language. It is not only beneficial personally, but beneficial to society because it helps foster understanding and appreciation for other cultures and the world beyond our borders as a whole.

 

when i go to taiwan, i expect to have to speak mandarin. i have no right to demand english!
